I have been diagnosed with chronic moderate to marked depression. My doctor originally put me on that old classic, Prozac, which did little or no good for my depression but certainly was a bonus to my waistline :( After a couple of months on Prozac, my doctor and I agreed that it was not really working for me and he took me off of Prozac and put me on Zoloft. This appeared to work a little better than the Prozac, however not without significant (and I mean SIGNIFICANT!) weight gain. After three months struggling with the weight gain, my doctor and I realized that my depression was being dramatically worsened by the massive weight gain and that a change in medication was again necessary.

I refused to go on any anti-depressent that had weight gain as a possible side effect and he did some research and discovered Wellbutrin had no weight gain side effects and not much decreased libido (another major issue with anti-depressents). I have been on Wellbutrin since then and I swear by...
...

mhudson6 says "I am a different person" about Wellbutrin Bupropion Hydrochloride

I absolutely LOVE Welbutrin! I used to be on Lexapro for years and I never seemed to be happy or upbeat. The whole reason why I was on Lexapro was for self confidence issues and gaining weight on Lexapro certanly did not help. I went off of lexapro for a while and did it cold turkey and my family and boyfriend were affected by my decision. I was never happy and I became snappy and sad 24/7. When I went to my doctor she prescribed me to Welbutrin and now about a month and a half later, I honestly feel like a new person. I have lost about a pound or two (I also have been excercising and eating well) and I feel so much better and people like to now be around me. I take two in the morning and I am really really happy. I cannot express how much of a different person I am because of this medicine and if anyone suffers from depression especially someone with low self confidence then is he pill for you.
...

sagalu123 says "Wellbutrin XL gave me the jitters!" about Wellbutrin Bupropion Hydrochloride

Yes, Wellbutrin XL gave me the jitters!

I was prescribed Wellbutrin XL some time ago and did not have a good experience with this drug. I was suffering from mild depression with fatigue and lethargy. I was advised that this particular medication offered an "activating" effect that could help combat my symptoms. I expected to feel more alert, awake, motivated, and desire to be active. I was very surprised when I quickly went from feeling depressed to feeling very anxious! I experienced an array of unpleasant sensations including shakiness, feeling jittery as well as an unpleasant restlessness and internal feeling of vibration. I also had trouble sleeping and terrible headaches that stopped once I was off the medication. In my experience, the side effects of the drug were just too much to bear.

I know for some this drug has offered great benefits, but for me it was pretty awful. If you have any tendency towards feeling restless or jittery I do not recommend this drug.
...

I was prescribed this medication when my regular medication did not seem to be doing the job. I did not notice any difference the first week but I began to notice a worsening of my depression symptoms by the second week. I began by crying almost every day and wanting to sleep most of the time that I was at home. By the third week I began having trouble completing work and feeling very sad all of the time. I began to gain weight at about three pounds a week. I saw my doctor and we agree to increase the dose. This did not make anything better. In fact, I began to have thoughts of suicide and my weight gain continued. After six weeks on this medication I had gained sixteen pounds, cried daily, fought with my husband and planned ways to commit suicide. My doctor decided that I should not take this medication anymore because of the side effects being dangerous. Two weeks after not taking it, and taking something else, my mood improved drastically.
...

bcarlson15210 says "Wellbutrin (bupropion) has worked for me." about Wellbutrin Bupropion Hydrochloride

I've had a long history of depression, starting when I was very young. I've been going to psychiatrists for years now, trying to find the right combination of drugs that would keep me functional and not make me so sedated I couldn't concentrate.

Wellbutrin has been working well for me for over 5 years with very few side effects.

Normally, I'm the person who gets every single side-effect possible. Small doses cause big effects in my body, so a number of other medications just wouldn't work for me. Some made me so sleepy I felt like a zombie. Others completely killed my interest in much of anything -- a volcano could have exploded next to me and I wouldn't have cared.

Wellbutrin doesn't do those things to me.

Antidepressants certainly don't make your problems go away, but if you need help with depression, the right drug can help make your problems easier to handle. It just made me feel more capable of dealing with my issues. It hasn't given me much trouble with side effects except that I...
...

Wellbutrin is the only antidepressant that has worked for me. All the SSRI's (seratonin sustained release inhibitor) make me bounce off the wall. My problem seems to be with norepinephrine and dopamine. My husband says I'm calmer, less prone to argue ( who, me?), and doesn't want me to ever get off the medication.
...

I started taking Wellbutrin for seasonal affective disorder. I would start it in the fall and go off in the spring. Unfortunately I was hit with depression and stayed on it throughout the year. Occassionall the Dr. would up or lower it. While I had the dosage maxed I started having memory loss. Then i started hearing bells. The Dr and my partner thought i was making it up. After picking up the phone enough times and answering the door for about 3 weeks i decreased the dosage and this helped. But the lower dosage was not enough for my depression so I had to change meds.
...

tk410158 says "Welbutrin + Zoloft = Well-oft; very effective combination." about Wellbutrin Bupropion Hydrochloride

When my combination treatment (counseling plus Zoloft) seemed to hit a plateau, my doctor suggested Wellbutrin XL. The combination produced a nearly immediate improvement. I continue taking the combination today.

The doctor told me that I should take Wellbutrin XL in the morning, as it could have an 'energizing' effect. However, I've taken it late in the day and have never had any problem with too much energizing at bedtime.

Although Zoloft alone greatly improved my mood, my outlook, and my life, the addition of Wellbutrin XL seemed to 'brighten' my mood and outlook. The effect is in no way artificial-feeling--no buzz, no high, no spaciness. It is instead just a more positive view of the day, every day.

The doctor suggested weaning off the Zoloft since the Wellbutrin XL seemed to be making such a positive improvement, but that change didn't work. It seems that the combination of the two medications works best for me.

gaelforce says "Is Wellbutrin XL The Best Depression Medication Ever?" about Wellbutrin Bupropion Hydrochloride

I was diagnosed with Clinical Depression. I had been treated wih Prozac, Paxil and Zoloft. None of them worked and I began to think nothing ever would. I began to see a psyciatrist and he was amazed that no doctor had thought to try Wellbutrin. He asked whether I'd try it and I jumped at the chance. It gave me hope.

It turned out that the hope was well justified. I felt better and had more energy soon after I started taking it. I was much clamer and little things didn't disturb me as much. I stopped losing my temper for trivial things. As a matter of fact trivial things didn't bother me at all. I became much more well adjusted in social situations and felt more self confident. It became much easier to focus.

I know that a lot of that progress was due to the work that me and my psychiatrist put in. I also know I never would have been able to do any of that work without the Wellbutrin.

As another beneficial side effect I was able to give up smoking. I mentioned that to my doctor and he told...
...

mistystar0003 says "Wellbutrin/Zyban to quit smoking works not 4 depression" about Wellbutrin Bupropion Hydrochloride

I'm not sure if this should be 2 reviews or 1.

About 4 years ago I used Zyban (Wellbutrin) to quit smoking. It worked wonders and had a little pick me up or energy burst. Not sure what to call it. I only took it for a few months then stopped.

About a year ago, I asked the doctor for something for mild depression. He prescribed Wellbutrin. He said that Zyban/Wellbutrin was the same thing but worked diffrently and in a diffrent amount than Wellbutrin for depression. I just said okay. I knew it worked as a pick me up before so surely it would work for depression. Well I've read about people having effects to both extremes the depression wellbutrin made them feel happy and i've also read the depression wellbutrin made them feel even more depressed. For me it did nothing. I still felt mildly depressed. No better, no worse. I did however have the WORST most discusting egg burps (medically i believe this is the "metallic tasting" burp they warn you can happen) YUCK !

TimothyL says "Bupropion is ineffective for smoking cessation." about Wellbutrin Bupropion Hydrochloride

Bupropion, generic for Wellbutrin, is ineffective for smoking cessation. In some cases, when tested against a placebo (or sugar pill), it yields the same results; so, it brings to question whether or not a person stopped smoking on his or her own accord while thinking the medication worked versus the medication working on its own to help the person stop.

When I first tried to stop smoking and bupropion was prescribed to me (at 150mg SR twice a day), it appeared to help. However, I fell off the wagon again and tried a second time to stop with the medication. It didn't help at all, and I doubt that I developed a tolerance of the medication in the time-frame that I took it a year or so before. I don't know if the brand medication would work better, as sometimes filler or inactive ingredients do play a factor at times (though doctors and pharmacists would argue), but generic bupropion was ineffective.

All in all, it may be worth a try, but a waste of time.
...
