LoveisJoy says "Mediocre Tale of Two Brothers is a Waste of Acting Talent" about We Own the Night

When I read the DVD synopsis of the movie, We Own The Night, I was expecting an intense thriller with fine acting and a smart story. Instead, I found the movie to be completely unoriginal, a bit tedious, and often predictable.
Joaquin Phoenix stars as Bobby Green and Mark Wahlberg takes on the role of his brother, Captain Joseph Grusinsky. At the heart of the story is the brothers' relationship on opposite sides of the law, as well as their relationship with father Deputy Chief Burt Grusinsky (Robert Duvall). Predictably, Bobby is the rebellious son and feels he can never measure up in his father's esteem in the way that his brother, Joseph, does. Following in his father's footsteps in the Police Department, Joseph is at odds with his brother and teams up with his father to infiltrate and break up a Russian mob. Since Bobby has a peripheral relationship with said mobsters, he has to make a decision whether to remain loyal to friends that he loves or to the family he opposes....
...

MikeMaroon says "Atmosphere, intensity, and more Russians than the Bolshoi Ballet" about We Own the Night

What do you get when you mix 3 of the finest actors working today with a standard crime drama involving the Russian mob? You get an immensely watchable movie that makes you care about the characters enough to get invested in the outcome.

The title references the slogan painted on New York City police cars in the 1980's and the NYPD's commitment to wiping out the drug trade. Two of those cops working to that end are Deputy Chief Burt Grusinsky (Robert Duvall) and his son Captain Joseph Grusinsky (Mark Wahlberg). At odds with them is Bobby Green (Joaquin Phoenix), who manages a prominent Brooklyn nightclub.

I'm not giving too much away telling you Bobby's true last name is Gursinsky and yes, he is also Burt's son and a man who has chosen the glamorous life, schmoozing the clientele at his club with a hot girlfriend (Eva Mendez) on his arm, over following dear old dad and his brother into police work. He's chosen to go by his mother's maiden name so no one will know he's from a cop family......

ChrisJarmick says "Acting and three excellent set pieces make this a near must see!" about We Own the Night

After seeing the trailer for We Own the Night last year, I was hoping it would be a worthwhile film. Then I heard it was booed in Cannes, and when it was released it got mostly mediocre reviews and didn't last long in theaters. I figured.. too bad but there's plenty of crime and gangster stories to watch already.
Then a friend and very talented writer, film critic declared the movie one of the best of 2007 and he said he might even go on record as saying the movie was better than The Godfather?

I took the statement with a grain of salt, but obviously this film is something I needed to see.

It is now out on DVD.

No, it isn't anywhere close to being as good as The Godfather, but if you were sick of The Godfather and you completely identify with the relationship of the two brothers played by Mark Wahlberg and Joaquin Phoenix , you might like it a lot more than I did.

I want movies to get details right-unless they are made for so little money, they simply couldn't be concerned with getting...
...

We Own the Night was a well done movie. Jaquine Phoneix was great along with Robert Duvall and Mark Wahlberg. It's a powerful dramatic story with some action in between. Tear-Jerker none the least. Enjoy the movie. It's a good one....
