I love shopping at Marshalls. They have great prices and excellent sales. I really love their selection. I am a large woman. I wear a size eighteen in pants and 40 in waist. Clothes this size are very expensive. Marshalls has such great styles in the latest fashions. Oh, I just love Marshalls. Also a huge and great selection in accessories. It really can give you a shock when you compare mall prices to Marshall prices. The comparison is really big. It makes me wonder why malls are so darn expensive and why are they still in business? Who wouln't want to save money? The locations are convienent. There are no long walkways to walk or long stairs to climb or elevators to wait for. Just in and out. And if you want to look like a million dollars but only spent a couple, Marshalls is the place to shop. Gotta love it.
...

JazzSinger says "Great story of tragedy and football." about We Are Marshall

On November 4, 1970, a chartered airplane carrying the Marshall University football team, the entire coaching staff except for one assistant coach, the university's athletic director, and many influential people from the town of Huntington, West Virginia crashed, killing everyone on board. We Are Marshall is the story of the rebuilding of the Marshall football team following that tragedy.

After the plane crash, Marshall is left with no athletic director, no head coach, and only four varsity players (Assistant Coach Red Dawson missed the flight for a recruiting trip, and the four players were left home for various reasons). The university originally decided to suspend the football program, but thanks to the efforts of senior player Nate Ruffin, the decision was ultimately made to continue with the football team.

The first step in rebuilding Marshall football was to hire a head coach, a task which fell to University President Donald Dedmon. Coach Dawson didn't want the job, and neither...
...

bkovacs says "Marshall, meet Matthew" about We Are Marshall

I'd heard a little about the movie We Are Marshall but didn't know the whole story. Turns out that it's a true story, about a college football team (including nearly all the coaches) that was virtually wiped out in a plane crash in 1970. The school, Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia, was devastated and could not immediately decide whether to continue the football program or not. Eventually, the university's president (played by a somewhat hangdog David Strathairn) is convinced to resume football the following year (1971).

The college president struggles to find a coach to rebuild the football program and eventually hires an unknown named Jack Lengyel. Portrayed by Matthew McConaughey, Jack Lengyel is a loony maverick who speaks in riddles and doesn't know some of the basics of football... particularly college football. Nonetheless, the coach perseveres and there is some uplifting football action in the film.

We Are Marshall makes Marshall University out to be a major football......

Bottom-Line: "WE ARE (ALL) MARSHALL."

Directed by Joseph McGinty Nichol a.k.a. McG We Are Marshal begins with Annie Cantrell (Kate Mara) the fiancée of one of the dead players, narrating as the tragedy that was the plane crash of November 14, 1970 unfolds on the screen. The Thundering Herd football team of Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia had just lost a home game and were flying to their next match up when the team plane crashed, killing all aboard.

The Varsity team was wiped out save four seniors and the team had to be re-built from scratch. The university president Dr. Dedmon (David Strathaim) brings in Jack Lengyel (Matthew McConaughey) to coach the team, after Red Dawson (Matthew Fox) the only surviving member of the Marshall University athletic department turns him down. Dawson would later come back as assistant coach.

My Viewpoint

We Are Marshall isn't a deep movie, McG did not dig deeply into the lives of those involved, indeed we know these people...
...

We are Marshall was well written. What an emotional film. The casting for this film was really done well. I didn't know the circumstances surrounding this film and the beginning of the movie just grasps your soul. I managed to get through without a tissue - what a surprise! As the story develops, the movie takes on a variety of comedy, sadness, hope, and determination. We are Marshall will appeal to many different people and it's a story that everyone should hear. You don't have to be a sports fan to watch this.

Matthew McConaughey was perfect for his role as, the side-talking, Coach Jack Lengyel. He always steals the scenes. Matthew Fox's (from Lost) role as Red Dawson was just as good. David Strathairn's performance as President Dedmon was very impressive. He's a very talented man. Kate Mara was "okay" in her acting for her character, Annie Cantrell. My only disappointment was in the diner when she first speaks to her finance's father after the tragedy. She made all of...
...

During the 1990s and 2000s, the Marshall University football program has produced a number of players who have made their way to the NFL. Among the best known former players from the Thundering Herd are Randy Moss (New England Patriots), Chad Pennington (New York Jets), and Byron Leftwich (Atlanta Falcons). In 1970, however, the University lost almost all of its team in a West Virginia plane crash that made national headlines. The only survivors were the ones who didn't travel with the team for the round trip flight. The movie We Are Marshall tells about the first year of the rebuilding process, concluding with their first home game of the 1971 season. At first, Marshall President Donald Dedmon (David Strathairn) wants to end the football program. However, Nate Ruffin (Anthony Mackie), one of the few surviving players, shows Dedmon that the campus community would like to see the program return. Ruffin feels that that is the best way to honor his fallen teammates. The show of support...
...

I have to say this is the most tear-jerky football movie since "Brian's Song." (The original, not the remake.) You just feel for all the people in the town and wonder how they could go on after such a tragedy. But go on they did, and in the most unconventional ways. I love movies where the characters do things out of the ordinary to accomplish something.

I think there were a couple of expletives, but for the most part, this is safe for kids who aren't too sensitive to tragedy in film. It's a great inspirational film that goes beyond being just a football movie.
...

I loved this movie. It had me from the very beginning. When the plane crash happened I felt as though it had flown directly through my heart and the pain didn't go away for the entire movie. The actors were all fantastic and believable. I remember when this tragedy happened and quite honestly had almost forgotten about it. I was born and raised in WV and I could see the heart of so many people that I know portrayed in this great movie. I don't think you have to love or even like football to enjoy this film. I will watch it over again many times and recommend it often. MY opinion is 5 stars.
...

I have to start this off by saying I am a HUGE college football fan. This is an excellent movie for sports fans. The movie follows the true life tale of the tragedy bestowed on Marshall University, when a plane crash killed the football team, coaches, and prominent members of the local community. A new team was created in only one season, led by a new head coach and dedicated university president.

The movie is a little heavy handed at times with the soundtrack (lots of violins during the sad parts), but that is my only complaint. I cried at least a half a dozen times and also laughed a lot, too. I highly recommend this movie.
...

We are a football family. We live and breathe it every weekend from August until January. My husband coaches and runs a youth league that's associated with his high school alma mater, my daughter cheerleads for the same league, and my son plays football for his high school freshman team and plays percussion in the high school band which plays at the varsity home games. There are literally some weekends where we have four games on the weekend, Thursday through Sunday. Yet, oddly, we aren't footballed out. I had seen the movie, We Are Marshall, with my kids in the theatre on one of their days off school and we all loved it. I knew I had to share it with my husband, so I bought the DVD.

One of the reasons I knew my husband had to see it is the football coach in the movie, Jack Lengyel (Matthew McConaughey), reminds me so much of him. Not with the eccentricities that Lengyel seems to have, or the crazy plaid pants he seems to favor, but his heart and beliefs in football. I saw the same dedication......
