This car breaks down a lot and is expensive to maintain. The parts are really expensive too....

My VW Passat has over 75,000 miles and drives like the first day I drove it off the lot (except of course for some body damage...not the car's fault!!) I would recommend the Make and Model!!...

redeye2565 says "Loved the 2002 Passat, just leased a 2008 Passat wagon" about Volkswagen Passat - 2002

My 2002 Passat hasn't been trouble free, but compares well to a Japanese make that I had a few years back. Smooth, responsive engine (2.8V-6) that gets decent mileage (18 town / 28 hwy) and has been reliable. Changed the belts, water pump, plugs, wires at 110,000 and had to change both front CV axles at 105,000. Brakes wear very well for here in the hills of western PA. Seats are comfortable. Got great tire mileage, seems to stay in alignment very well.

On the negative side, don't expect the A/C to cool things down much if it's above 85 and sunny outside. Some of the usual German electrical problems cropped up - headlights (and all other lights) burn out quick, and had to have several switches changed out. Also, it is expensive to repair unless you find a good VW / Audi mechanic and don't have to take it back to the dealer.

Had a good enough experience that I leased a 2008 Passat wagon with the 2.0 Turbo in it and am impressed with it so far. It feels lighter and doesn't...
...

jamo001 says "I find excuses to drive." about Volkswagen Passat - 2002

It looks sweet. It drives great. It's stylish. The interior can't be beat. The features are useful. It runs great. Volkswagen fends for you, the customer. I love this car so much that I look for excuses to drive now, even with gas prices high. This thing absolutely grips to the road and rides so smoothly. I love feeling the engine purr and I'm completely sold on German engineering.
...

Lora726 says "Great ride, unreliable engine!" about Volkswagen Passat - 2002

Bought my Passat brand new 5 years ago and have a love-hate relationship with it. It's a dream to drive (love the turbo-kick) and a super-comfy ride, but it's in the shop a lot and boy, are the parts pricey! Luckily, I've got a terrific service shop and had a good experience with VW Customer Care. When I complained about the brake booster going after the warranty just expired, they reimbursed me the $200+ for the part. So far so good in its latest year on the road, but I would not recommend this car or buy another....
