I am a UNC alum and I would recommend this school to anyone interested in a solid liberal arts education. Not only does this institution provide an excellent education but compared to other private universities, the cost is relatively affordable. It's one of best bargains available especially for NC residents (which I am not).
...

I attended a Distance Education program offered through the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill's Social Work department. I attended classes at Forsyth County DSS in Winston Salem. I loved the program. We were a very tight knit group since we met together every Friday for 2 years to obtain our degrees! We were working toward a Master's in Social Work. The group was very diverse. We missed out on some of the support services provided by the University since we were distance learners, but that was OK because we created our own support systems! This program took much dedication and lots of very hard work, but at the end--we were all proud to call ourselves UNC-CH GRADS!
...

Students have a commitment to social justice, known as a "liberal" school (especially for the South), but all viewpoints heard - with conservative minority being louder in Student Congress and school paper. Many highly acclaimed departments, majors, and graduate programs - bad advising department (at the moment) which is working to improve itself. Ask me for any more information, more than happy to accomodate....

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is a fantastic school. It has a beautiful campus, and there is a great community atmosphere. The graduate school programs are high ranking. Tuition is a decent price (because it is a public school). Overall, I highly recommend this university. Note: My experience there was as a grad student, but I had many friends who had also attended undergrad there and loved it (which is probably why they stayed for grad school!)....

If you know anything about UNC Chapel Hill, you know there's a big rivalry with NC State. The schools are about a half hour apart. I was accepted at both but opted to go to State. My son goes to Chapel Hill.

Both are excellent state universities. It really boils down to the areas of interest. Since my son is more the liberal arts type, Chapel Hill was the better choice. So, I wave both flags now.

Actually I can say that I did go to UNC Chapel Hill. I took one class from NC State as an undergraduate with graduate students over at UNC. That was a good experience. I made an "A."

Chapel Hill has an excellent reputation, and it's hard to get in. It's a good idea to have a back up application. You'll need to be near the top of your class, have strong SAT scores and probably need some outside activities - sports, Scouts etc.

If you visit the campus, you'll see that's it's a beautiful campus. The main area is lush and green with many old buildings. They do have a lot of construction and buildings...
...

I came to UNC from out of state, not knowing anyone, and now my best friends are those I met in college. I've had the most amazing time here. Everyone is friendly, and there's just some sort of special connection that you feel to the campus and to all the students and alumni. If I'm in a different state and I meet someone who goes/went to UNC, we become instant friends. It's a good school academically and basketball-wise, the weather is nice (especially spring when the azaleas are in bloom), and the campus is beautiful. There are clubs and groups for just about anything you want to do, and if it doesn't exist, it only takes 5 interested members to start one. And if God isn't a Tarheel, then why is the sky Carolina Blue?...

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is among the best public ivy's in this nation. With highly esteemed academics and incredible athletic programs, it can't be beat. In-state tuition is practically a steal, and out of state tuition isn't bad at all. Chapel Hill is absolutely charming- the quintessential college town. It is a liberal gem in the heart of the south....

My credentials are that I attended this university & I work here, now. I have seen it from the student perspective and from the staff member's perspective.

The oldest building on campus dates back to the 1790's. It is still in use as a residence hall. At the same time, it is currently renovating and building new buildings to accommodate a larger and more diverse student body. As of May 2007, it has completed 38% of the planned projects. The American Society of Landscape Architects selected UNC-CH as one of the most beautifully lanscaped spots in the US.

Yes, slaves helped to build the University and today, thanks in large part to the efforts of the Black Student Movement, their role is acknowledged and appreciated. UNC-CH is striving toward acknowledging its history but not ignoring it. The Historical Collection in the Library is a large part of that, especially as they add material to their on-line collection through scanning and other methods. They have one of the largest slave narrative......
