Finally!! For those who have followed the Underworld movies since the first one, Rise of the Lycans as satisfying as it gets!

In the original Underworld, I found myself wanting...more. More action, bigger, badder werewolves, more aggressive and tougher vampires - I was a bit disappointed in the weakness of both races. And when Michael became a hybrid between the two, I expected him to be the Ultimate fighter. Wrong. He was tough enough to beat Viktor, but he just didn't look as impressive as I thought he should. I mean, shouldn't he have been like twice the others' size?

And I must admit, the vampires' and werewolves' past was every bit as interesting to me as their present. I'm one of those who feels that the background is essential to telling a story, and the few flashes in the first two movies left me wanting more.

In Rise of the Lycans, I got more! Here we see the start of the feud, fleshing out of the characters' stories, several nagging questions answered, and bigger,...
...

jenl74 says "As awesome as the first" about Underworld: Rise of the Lycans

I had to see Underworld: Rise of the Lycans the day it came out in the theater. I hope they don't stop this wonderful saga. The story was great, it is a prequel to Underworld and Underworld Evolution. I kept reading reviews that people were so disappointed that Kate Beckinsale wasn't in this movie, and I admit that I was a little disappointed, but you can't have Selene in the prequel which tells the story of the beginning feud between lycans and vampires. After watching Rise of the Lycans, I was happy that Rhona Mitra played Sonya, she did an awesome job and it makes the story line fall in place with Selene. There is a lot of action, blood, and violence, but it goes along with the story. Michael Sheen who plays Lucian is such a great actor and he makes you believe that there really is true love. All I can say is that if you don't watch all three of these movies starting with Underworld of course, you are missing out.
...

I watched the first 2 Underworld movies on DVD and I must admit that while I enjoyed them a great deal I had to watch each one twice to catch all the plot twists. Even then there was some "history" behind those 2 stories that I did not fully understand.
Underworld: Rise of the Lycans does an excellent job of filling in the details and gives even more depth to some of the characters you meet in the first 2 movies - which I definitely plan to go back and watch again now!
Definitely and R movie though - very brief (but pretty explicit) sex scene and of course lots of gory killing plus some whipping scenes that are pretty graphic. The sex scene was not really necessary but the violence and gore pretty much fit the plot.
...
