The rival software TaxCut charges less for its desktop software, and provides several forms of tax support for free with live agents, or with tax professionals in the H&R Block offices. To its credit, TurboTax includes a wider range of self-help tools to manage questions, risk, and audits on your own. However, any one-on-one support you want with a topic or an audit will cost you between $20 and $40. We think TurboTax's tools and new knowledge base will answer most taxpayers' burning questions.

Which desktop version?
This review covers the desktop version of TurboTax Deluxe, with State, but there's a version of TurboTax 2008 for everyone:

Turbotax Deluxe Federal and State computer software is fairly easy to use. I have used this software for the last five years. Each year it has gotten easier to use. If you are adept at doing your taxes, you can choose which information you need to enter. Or you can follow the step by step instructions. The program has helpful sections to explain why something is needed or what the information is that they are asking for. Has the option to talk to a live adviser/expert. The error check is great! Gives you a secure feeling ,that you did your taxes correctly. This year the purchase included five electronic federal filings for free. State filings were 19.95 each, which seems high. Also has an Audit Risk Meter, which gauges your chances of being audited. This feature gives you a feeling of security also.

Overall the program is easy to use, has five free electronic federal filings and available live assistance.

TurboTax 2008 Deluxe Tax Preparation Software is a pain in the neck. Our taxes aren't that complicated, I'm tech and financially savvy, so why did I spend more time yelling at the computer than entering data??? It does start of gently helping you go through first steps of process. The help system sucks tho and I was frequently confused as to what the help response was actualling referring to. There's way too many phrases and questions that the software doesnt help you with, which was one of the reasons I'd bought this for.

Whilst touting efiling as way to go, it wasn't until I submitted it that I was told that I wasn't eligible for efiling, but not before they'd charged me for it. So back to mailing it in and not holding my breath.

Turbotax Deluxe 2008 would not download. Could not get support. I have wasted money. I have to buy Taxcut from H & R Block....

I have been using Turbotax now for 8 years and I am finding it easier every year to finish my taxes. The taxes that I have to complete every year are different (sold stock, sold home, etc.), but I have always found the software to be easy to understand.

The only addition to this software that I would like to see is a free 1 time use to electronic file. If your paying for the software, an electronic filing should be included. This year, they are including 1 of the 2 to be free, but still an extra $19ish to get the other one filed electronically.

The software makes it easy to important previous years tax filings, to help you prepare your taxes for the current year.

My wife an I have never been audited and we find it helpful at the end of the entry wizard it shows you the likelyhood that you will be audited or not.

Besides the suggestion above, I find the software price to be fair and will be purchasing it in the future.

My job, mortgage consultant, has lots of travel time and many things I didn't know how to write off in my taxes forcing me to employ a certified C.P.A. to itemize my deductions and maximize my refund. With the economy being the way it is and my job suffering a little from the mortgage crisis, spending the $400 to get my taxes done was not an option. I purchased the Deluxe Version of Turbo Tax earlier in February 2009 with a little skepticism of how easy it was going to be. To my surprise, everything was mapped out and the software actually knew where my deductions were going to come from by asking me questions about the type of financial year I had. I would recommend Turbo Tax to anyone who itemizes deductions or others with the standard deduction.

Special Note: If you dontate many items to charity throughout the year, this software takes care of that with ease. Be sure to have the address of the charity and the date of donation and Turbo Tax will take care of the rest.

It seems strange to remember that there was a time years ago when filing my Federal income tax with the 1040EZ form took only about ten minutes. Things got a tad more complicated when I bought a home and began to itemize deductions. Everything began to slide downhill when I retired and suddenly had to report income pensions, dividends and interest payments from several different sources. I'm not complaining about having retirement income, of course, but it did complicate the tax-reporting process to the point where I actually overpaid some taxes. A couple experiences with H. R. Block years ago had not inspired a lot of confidence but clearly I wasn't doing so well by myself either.

It was with some misgivings that I gave TurboTax tax preparation software a try. The first time I used it seemed to be a lengthy process because the program asked for great detail. No longer could I just run up a tape of my charitable donations...

I have been using TurboTax products for years. It is so easy to use. It asks you questions that are easy to understand and basically does all the work for you. Not to mention that using TurboTax Deluxe 2008 you can deduct the cost of it on your taxes.

Since I have used TurboTax products I have had larger tax refunds than when I did it myself.

I have used turbo tax for several years now. I use the online version and it saves all my previous information automatically transfers last years data into this years tax information without me having to look up things i don't have time to be looking up! I am very busy I own my own business, my own home, I have a husband and TWO (almost 3) kids. Turbo tax walks you through your taxes step by step and it's quick and painless. I don't have to worry about gathering my stuff up and bringing it somewhere waiting in line for my turn and fidning someone to babysit while i get my taxes done. My favorite feature is "audit risk check" it tells you if you are a high or low risk of getting auditted each year and it tells you why and how to lower your risk. It's great for a business owner!!! :-) It cost me $150 to do the business, personal, and BOTH states it costs a friend of mine $450 each year to go to H&R block and I get more money back. LOL...

im not very good at doing taxes but with turbo tax you dont have to be good all you have to do is enter in your w-2 and the software does the rest for you i mean it cant get any easier than that. the best part is that it helps you get the max refund and i think everyone like to hear that....

I have used Turbo Tax for years and years and years to complete my taxes and have found it to be extremely user friendly and efficient. This year I am out of the loop. I can't download Turbo Tax since I use a Mac and my system is OS 10.3.9 and it won't upgrade. Turbo Tax will only work on 10.4. I can still use Turbo Tax online but it costs me over 80 dollars for the Deluxe and the state program. Since I do both my taxes and my fathers, 2 Deluxe programs plus 3 states will cost well over $200. Not all of us can buy new computers as often as we would like to and Turbo Tax is making things very difficult. Sorry they have gone so unfrienly this year. I will miss them....

This is the second year that I have used a discounted copy of Turbo Tax from my bank and one was also available from the brokerage company I use. It took more time for me to get all my records in order that it did to plug in the numbers, etc. Quick and easy, this is the answer to everyone moaning about how expensive it is to have an accountant do their taxes. E-filing is available as is donation values for other than cash contributions if you itemize deductions. I used the Delux version and it did my federal and state versions. There was a glitch that it wouldn't give up my deceased husband's entry in 2006 of alimony. I just overrode it, printed it out to see if it was on the return...it was not listed on the return and I mailed in the paperwork to the IRS. The only downside was that if you have a glitch in the computer software, it will not let you e-file...you have to file by mail and your refund will be as long as 6 weeks instead of the adveritised 14 day length of time. ...

Turbo Tax does really lead you through doing your taxes. It's so nice to sit back and just answer questions instead of having to wonder which categories apply to you, etc. While it is true that not every single question is worded in an -easy-to-understand way, it sure does make it easy to do your taxes. And super fast, too!...
