25 October 2008 by Michael DeZubiria

Many people consider the 1970s to be the high point of horror movies. It was a formative decade for a genre that had been around for more than half a century because filmmakers were beginning to shake off the censorship restrictions of earlier years and had not yet succumbed to the bad CGI and teen cuteness that ruined so many horror films in later decades. So, here in no particular order (other than numerical:), are my top 10 horror movies of the 70s...

10. Satan's School For Girls (1973), Unrated, 78 mins.

Ok, so I'll start with one you've never heard of. Satan's School For Girls is not a great horror movie, it's actually a made-for-tv horror thriller, but while the bad parts are pretty bad, the good parts are creepy as hell. A young girl's mysterious death seems to leave no explanation other than one involving the supernatural, so the police quickly close the case and move on, leaving the girl's sister to take the investigation into her own hands....
...

The list can go on and on .The point is these movies hold you in your seat and you don't even know that you have been holding your breath till a commicral. Does any one out there remember Dr. Shock and Ding Bat. on saturday nights. seems like now there is a lot more about blood guts and cut them up. I enjoy the ghostly scaryparts of the past. Don't get me wront i love the movies now too. But it was different in the 70's things were still unknown and scary. Now there is so much known about the dead that it not as scary to the young people now....

personally, i think the chuckie doll movies were for most the scariest. Just the thought of a little boys doll coming to life absolutely horrifies me. I could never amagine this really happen! Forget Seed of Chucky, Bride of Chucky, and the other two sequels that came after this surprisingly good horror romp. Tom Holland (Fright Night) directed this horror romp, in which the soul of a deranged killer inhabits a child's doll. Child's Play manages to boast a few genuine scares and add some creepy atmosphere to boot, with Brad Dourif doing great work as the voice of killer "good guy" doll Chucky. I won't go into the plot, since everyone pretty much already knows it, but what I will say is that this is about ten times better than any movie to feature the killer doll released since, and surprisingly the film hasn't aged too badly. All in all, if you've never seen the original...

i started out with dracula, frankenstein, the werewolf and the mummy. they were scary when i was a kid. then, i saw "the night of the living dead" in 1968. i was in a cold sweat all night long. it was in black and white but i think that's what made it so creepy. now, its all about blood and guts. the more blood, the better. my favorites are "the day of the dead" and "dawn of the dead". both "dawn of the dead" movies are great. if you like to be scared, these will chill you to the bone....

I'm just going to scratch the surface and cover some of the more obvious highlights of the best of 1970 horror films in two essays.

10.

Last House on the Left 1972 Directed by Wes Craven

Sandra Cassell, Lucy Grantham, David A. Hess. "Keep repeating, 'It's only a movie, it's only a movie'" was the famous tagline created for Craven's debut film, but used several times for other movies well into the 80s. Last House is a very crude film that is guaranteed to offend you on a variety of levels as it breaks many taboos of its day. It's a very loose adaptation of Ingmar Bergman's Virgin Spring. It's a twisted tale of rape, depravity and revenge with counter-culture Vietnam era vets and drug fueled miscreants pitted against a well off family in the suburbs. It is still disturbing on several levels. I don't think very much of Wes Craven as a technical film-maker but sometimes he knows exactly the kind of material to bring to the screen and connect with audiences (Nightmare on...
...

The 1970s were a great decade for horror. There were still plenty of drive-ins and grindhouses needing a steady supply of the gothic, the ghostly, and the gory, so there were a ton of worthy films from which to choose. This list is very subjective, of course, so be forewrned. For further reading, check out my Top Ten Horror Movies of the '60s and Top Ten Classic Horror Movies.
1. THE DEVILS (1971) Director Ken Russell's greatest achievement, based on Aldous Huxley's The Devils of Loudon, stars Oliver Reed as Father Urbain Grandier, a licentious priest in 17th century France accused of sorcery by a hysterical, hunchbacked Mother Superior played by Vanessa Redgrave. On orders from Cardinal Richilieu, a creepy inquisitior (Michael Gothard) puts Grandier on trial, and ultimately has him burned at the stake. With grotesque plague victims, naked nuns, and other sacreligious imagery courtesy of lapsed Catholic Russell. The most horrific thing about THE DEVILS is that it is based on actual historical...
...
