I'm in sixth grade, and I re-read it because there was nothing else to do and noticed many of the mistakes and flaws, yet I think it is a unique style of writing, and it was funny and serious both, which is a pretty good combination. I like the characters, plot, and the dialogue was good, but I don't think this is all that great. I would read this book.</p>... Like all in the series, this book focuses on the miserable lives of the Baudelaires in the aftermath of a terrible fire that claims the lives of their parents. In a world that seems terribly unfriendly and unjust to children, the Baudelaires learn to draw upon each other when they are faced with their new guardian - a treacherous man named Count Olaf who schemes to steal the orphans inheritance.</p>&#13; <p>While some events are sad, granted, the series has earned it's reputation for being extremely accesible by children. Snickett's keen focus on reading and vocabulary as a necessary skill in his plots helps encourage young readers to continue reading, and helps to build a strong vocabulary, not to mentioning an immensely entertaining...</p>... Sun, 24 May 2009 17:17:47 GMT http://www.viewpoints.com/The-bad-beginning-review-f72f4 onijujitsu 5 http://www.viewpoints.com/The-bad-beginning-review-8ad96 <p>This is the first of a wonderful series of books about three orphans who seem doomed to live forever with a series of inept and unsuitable guardians.  It might seem as though this setting would not be appropriate for humor but the colorful characters, unusual settings, and clever plot twists make these books enjoyable for children and great "light reading" for adults.  The three orphans each have unique talents--Violet is an inventor, Klaus is an avid reader who remembers everything that he reads, and Sunny has very strong teeth that she uses to bite things.  Each of these talents helps the children to get out of a number of sticky situations with hilarious results.  The villain of the story, Count Olaf, attempts to gain guardianship of the children in order to gain access to a tremendous fortune that was left to the children by their parents, who perished in a house fire.  He is assisted in this by a number of thugs including, but not limited to, the hook-handed man, the powder-faced...</p>...
