The zone isnt some gimmicky diet. Its a real life eating plan. It helps you understand portions, good fats, protein, carbs and sugar in a realistic sense. Most people don't understand the basics and that's why their diets fail. This book teaches you what you need to know to flourish and befriend food.
...

Jules1221 says "The Zone is a great way to optimize athletic performance." about The Zone

I tried Sears' Zone after a friend recommended it. I was training for a powerlifting meet and a sprint triathlon, and was interested in finding out if changing my eating habits could improve my training. I ate more than the recommended number of blocks because I was doing a lot of training. I only lost a few pounds (I wasn't trying to), but my body composition changed to significantly leaner. I performed well in both events I was training for.

Although the blocks can be overwhelming at first, after a couple weeks I rarely had to look up how much of a given food I shoudl be eating. I thought that I would miss bread and pasta, but following this diet seemed to curb those cravings. It was a little tough to keep my sweet tooth under control, but overall this was an easy diet to follow and gave me good results....

As a veteran dieter- yo-yo Lady- I finally gave up and had gastric bypass.; I finally learned that DIETS DO NOT WORK. The word "diet" implies a limited time period, NOT permanance. I have read about this plan, and if you followed it forever, its a healthy meal plan BUT are you really gonna eat this way.......your whole life? Doubt it. The Zone is a decent way to eat but puhleeze dont think of it as a "diet"!
...

faysw3 says "The Zone Diet really gets you into the zone!" about The Zone

The Zone is not a "diet", but a new and healthy way of thinking about your relationship with food. Based on the personal experiences of my husband and me, it works. I just needed to loose weight and feel healthier. My husband developed Type II Diabetes and began having trouble with his eyes. We had dabbled with the Zone several before, but this time we knew we needed to do more than dabble, especially for my husband's health issues. We just refreshed ourselves with the basics, made some simple changes, and good things have begun to happen, including my weight loss has begun, greatly reducing my husband's need for his blood sugar medication, and improvement in his eye health. He feels really good about the changes. It has shown him he can control his blood sugar regular monitoring and by controling what and how much he eats. (Yet, neither of us feel deprived at all!) It truly is a healthy habit to develop, as well as enjoyable. We both highly recommend it.

faysw3
...

I read this book when it first came out years ago and still follow the basic principles of a lean protein, small amount of bread or pasta, and many vegetables at each meal. It's the only way I can maintain my weight and is a no-brainer...

saunniek says "Easy and it works, no need to buy any special products" about The Zone

The zone diet is effective, easy to follow, and safe. It will help with more then simple weight issues, including diabetes, and joint pain. The premise of the diet is that at each meal you should consume approximately 10 grams of fat, 20 grams of protein (2x the fat grams) and 30 grams of carbohydrate (3x the fat grams). The carbs are from fruits and vegatables, little or no bread, pasta, or potatoes. The rest of the diets that cite glycemic index are variations of the zone diet. Everything you need for this diet can be purchased at a regular grocery store, and the diet (including a full weeks menu plan, and recipes) can be found on the web....

opus88 says "Overall better than most other diet-related programs." about The Zone

I've read many books about diet programs. I am not dieting to lose weight - I have chronic health difficulties that require me to be very conscious and cautious of what I eat.

This is one of only 2 general nutrition-related books that I recommend when asked. The Zone makes much sense, and is much easier to apply and stick with than nearly all of the others. It just takes a little understanding and a desire to implement it.

There are many applications to various diseases in the book, including arthritis, cancer, diabetes, chronic fatigue and more. The recipes are delicious and very helpful (you can also purchase a separate volume which includes many recipes). In order to be thorough, there is quite a bit of technical information - but you don't have to fully understand that detailed information to incorporate the principles of the program.

I do take exception to the author's recommendations to use synthetic foods such as protein powders. Our bodies do not know how to assimilate artificial......

I've been on many diets, mostly related to staying healthy. This one makes the most sense to me in a long-term health way. You can eat what you want, you just have to focus on portions. I tend to eat fairly healthfully, but I like to splurge as much as anyone else. It's nice to not feel guilty when I do. When you fall off the train, just hop back on at the next meal....
