If you are on the Outer Banks, you should find some time to visit the Wright Brothers National Memorial. This site is showcases the location of the first powered flight and stands as a memorial to the Wright Brothers, who made it possible.

Located directly off off of Highway 158 in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, the Memorial is very easy to find if you're in the Outer Banks. You will have to pay a $4 per person entry fee (as of 2009), but that gives you a week of access to the park and lets you visit all of the attractions in the park.

The site has four different major areas to visit. The main exhibit areas are the visitors center and the Centennial Pavilion. Both of these have different exhibits on the life of the Wright Brothers, the history of the area and the history of powered flight. In the outdoors you have two major areas to visit. The first is the living quarters, hangar and airfield where the first flight took place. Then from there you can walk to Big Kill Devil Hill where...
...

Great, inexpensive, educational! My daughter and I just returned from vacation to Outer Banks! She enjoyed this exhibit as her class had just been discussing this expedition recently! It is great to be able to show her the place and history related to something she read in her school books. The facility is clean and inexpensive to visit. It has lots of information and many informed staff/volunteers who can answer most questions. There are plenty of items for sale to remember the visit too. I love the view from the top of the hill, you can see forever! It must have been very exciting for the Wright Brothers that faithful afternoon!
...

The Wright Brothers Memorial Park
Outer Banks
Kills Devil Hills, NC

As we reached the top of the hill where the Wright Brothers Monument towers, as if on cue the visor I’d been wearing all week blew right off of my head. My daughter said, “That’s why they came here to fly. It’s the windiest place on the Outer Banks.” I could not have planned a better demonstration.

If you enjoy history and a bit of walking, The Wright Brothers Memorial in Kill Devil Hills, NC is a worthy visit.

The Wright Brothers Memorial Park is part of the United States National Park Service.

The park includes:

The Wright Brothers Visitor Center, where Wilbur and Orville Wrights’ stories are told through exhibits.

Displays include a full-scale reproduction of the 1902 glider, a full-scale reproduction of the 1903 flying machine, an engine block from the original 1903 Flyer and a reproduction of the Wright's first wind tunnel.

Even though as a teacher I have read quite a lot about the experiments of Wilbur......
