prospectboy says "One of the best shows ever!" about The Wire

I had heard about The Wire years ago, but I never bothered to check it out. When they began showing it on BET in the Spring of 2007, I started watching, and I instantly became interested. I wanted to get the full effect of the show though as they didn't have the vugarity and violence on a cable channel like BET. So I decided to put all of the available seasons in my netflix queue, and after getting hooked on this show I was absolutely blown away. I was anxiously waiting each week to receive another dvd of The Wire to see what was going to happen next. I must say that this is easily one of the best shows to ever been made. The storylines and plots blend well into each season. The authenticity of the show gives it a lot of crediability of the Baltimore drug game, and the police that at times use corruption to fight it. I would definitely recommend this show to anyone. You will instantly get hooked after watching just a few episodes.
...

jadeval76 says "THE WIRE should have won many Emmy awards" about The Wire

I never watched The Wire when it was on TV, just didn't think I'd get into it~

My husband Netflixed the entire series last summer and we watched it together and all I can say is WOW ~ How did this series not win all of the Emmy awards each season?

We could hardly wait for each disc to arrive while we were watching it, not just for Season One either, for every single season~

The drug trade and people on the streets were enacted so realistically that I actually felt like I was THERE with each episode~ I especially enjoyed the characters of Marlow, Stringer Bell, and all of the detectives and policemen and women~

The Wire was a series that I hated to see end, It really left me wanting more.

There were so many characters that could have been expanded on so I don't know why the series had to end when it did~ IT WAS THAT GOOD!
...

This was an awesome show that I was turned on to a little late. I did not start watching until the 3rd season and was immediately hooked. Awesome show that shows what it really is like to grow up in the streets of Baltimore, shady politicians, and corrupt officers. It also show the good and the people who really try to make a difference despite the obstacles.
...

Now, I'm honestly not usually into crime shows. I have never seen a Law and Order and never watched a CSI. Truly, I haven't. When my husband said that he wanted to watch The Wire, I groaned and braced myself for some mindnumbing sleuthing. Well, The Wire is nothing like that! Thank the TV Gods!

For the most part, the acting is phenomenal. And, they don't result to the gimmick of having one really well-known star surrounded by some other lesser known actors (yes, I'm talking to you, CSI). So, it's really nice to be introduced to new actors.

The plots are also great (with the exception of Season 2 - which was, in my opinion, the worst of the seasons). For the most part, the twists are unpredictable and the stories take almost a full season (or more) to play out. Nothing wraps up in an episode. It's like reading a good, long book. CSI is People Magazine.

There are many characters that you are supposed to love to hate, but only one which I just hated to hate and...
...

toshatta says "great show" about The Wire

What Simon and his collaborators achieve is breathtaking -- creating a dozen parallel plotlines that slowly converge as the season progresses, all rooted in a totally organic world. There is drug kingpin Marlo (Jamie Hector), consolidating his hold on the streets; Det. Lester Freamon (Clarke Peters), who continues to follow the drug money despite his higher-ups' reluctance to stir the pot in an election year; and former cop Howard Colvin (the magnificent Robert Wisdom), who, after unilaterally decriminalizing drugs in season three, is recruited to research at-risk teens, intersecting with the aforementioned youths.

Even those descriptions hardly do the show justice, or capture small moments that resonate after each hour ends -- from a teen realizing the unwitting role he played in an older boy's death to the nagging realities of city politics, where diligence is seldom rewarded amid an endless cycle of poverty, drugs and violence. Nothing else on U.S. television -- including its myriad...
...

The Wire is the best feeling show I've ever watched. I say feeling because, when your watching it you can't help but feel for the characters. From Jim McNulty the Homicide Detective/ Alcoholic to Avon Barksdale the top drug dealer on Baltimore's westside. You want to see what this character is going to do next, and alot of times your rooting for both side The Cop and The Streets. That the gold about this show, Its main character Baltimore, its plays as much part of The Wire Story as the Cops or Drug Dealers. And this show wants to show you all of Baltimore. The Wire give you many view point of there city. First your start at The Docks then you see The Law then on to The Streets, Politics, Schools, and Paper the "Baltimore Sun". All these view points run into each other and around and lead to the next view point. All these view points have characters that you hate, care, and hope for, characters raise into new better view point of Baltimore and some fall to point of Baltimore they tought...
...

The Wire was a great series on HBO. We can't wait for the next season to start. My husband and I watched religiously, and couldn't get enough. Very realistic look at crime and law enforcement. The criminals and the crimes they commit are based on today's problems, and how they are handled. The show draws you in, and keeps you wanting more, to see how things are going to work out, if the police are going to catch the bad guy, to what lengths the police and everyone involved will go to catch the criminals, or keep the "good guys" from getting caught, wondering, who are the real "bad guys?"
...

This television series from the creators of OZ, Homicide: Life on the Streets, and Generation Kill is the best television series ever aired. The series was written about the political, criminal, and social issues surrounding very compelling characters in Baltimore Maryland, an American city in decline. Each season focuses on a separate issue of the problems of our society and the causes of those problems ranging from poverty, corruption, the school system, the press, and the political institution all while using creative, funny and compelling characters that can make you laugh, cry, and think. One of the more interesting parts about watching this series is that you find yourself routing for drug dealers that use shotguns to fight against other drug dealers, but still have an ethical code that they never stray from. There are corrupt cops and real po-lice (the good guys). There are young kids who don't know any better than the life of drugs and crime that they were born into. ...
...

xriotdotbiz says "Awesome. Period!" about The Wire

Recently I started getting into DVD sets for series I hadn't seen before but heard a lot of buzz for. Moving and traveling a lot never had HBO, but there were times I made an effort to catch the Sopranos.

Hearing an interview with the creator of The Wire on NPR, and some of the dialog of the character Snoop intrigued me enough to give it a try. From episode one I was hooked and went through the series as fast as I can using my Blockbuster mail and exchange programs. Think I went through the whole series (except the last season) in one week. Then when the last season was released, devoured it in a day.

The Wire has some truly unique story telling that hadn't been done before or since. Bold reality rarely seen even on cable. Unexpected twists were always wonderful, and not so story book stories endings for some characters. Some story lines haunt me still, as the story of a "legalized" drug zone or the unexpected end of a key bad guy/good guy in the series final season....
...
