bkovacs says "Beautiful western with a grouchy John Wayne" about The Searchers 1956

I'd heard a lot about the film The Searchers over the years and finally got to see it. Made in 1956 by legendary director John Ford, The Searchers is a tale of dogged persistance by an otherwise hard-to-like character.

Beautifully shot in Monument Valley, Arizona, The Searchers features all the western scenery you could want. Throw in bad indians, a torched homestead, horses, colorful characters and a couple of pretty women, and you have all the fixings of a fine western. And The Searchers is a fine western, just not a likeable as it could be.

Indians lure the men of the Edwards family away from the desolate homestead. While the men are away, the indians attack and kill the remaining people, except that one child -- Debbie -- is carried off. When Ethan Edwards (John Wayne) learns this, he scours the country for the next five years looking for Debbie. With Ethan for most of the search is Debbie's half-brother Martin (Jeffrey Hunter). Back at a neighboring ranch, pretty Laurie (Vera Miles)...
...

The Searchers (1956)

John Ford teamed up with John Wayne to make one of the greatest westerns in history, the story of a man who would not stop searching for his lost niece, no matter what.

John Wayne stars as Ethan Edwards, a Civil War veteran who returns to his Texas home on the eve of an Indian massacre. While the men are drawn off by a ruse following supposed cattle rustlers, the Comanches swoop down and kill all the kin folks Ethan has. There are indications the Indians have taken the two young daughters captive and Ethan resolves to track them down.

At first the neighbors and local peace officer (Ward Bond) help Ethan search, but eventually they tire and return home leaving Ethan with his half-breed nephew (Jeffrey Hunter) and the neighbor boy, who is sweet on one of the girls, to gamely follow the dim trail. Soon the grim faced Ethan informs the two boys he has found what was left of Lucy, the older girl, in a side canyon. This drives the Jorgenson boy crazy and he charges into......

ChrisJarmick says "Monument Valley Technicolor John Wayne Great Film # 15" about The Searchers 1956

I came to appreciate this movie after many viewings. I didn't want to like ANY John Wayne movie all that much, but then I saw gems like Tie a Yellow Ribbon, Rio Bravo, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, The Shootist and then there is this; the ultimate John Wayne classic with Wayne giving an atypical performance. It's a downright risky one because it is very difficult to like Ethan Edwards. He's a racist who truly despises Indians and is being eaten alive by the believe that his kidnapped neice (Natalie Wood has been raped by a savage. He is conflicted between rescuing her and killing her.
This kind of depth in a western? And not an Anthony Mann directed Western (which are for the most part brilliant by the way) but by John Ford? Ford topped himself in just about every way with this his best film.. There are several images in this film that you will never forget. Ford's cinematographer Winton C. Hoch masterfully frames Monument Valley...
...
