robtrav says "Pillars of the Earth is Follet's best book" about The Pillars of the Earth

I love historical fiction and Pillars of the Earth is a great example of this genre! I read Pillars of the Earth before going to England on vacation and it was great preparation for appreciating some of the history. I was able to explain historical aspects to my family as we visited different sites. It was much more interesting to have read about early developments in this book than to have tried to read a history book ohn it. Follett develops his characters so that they are memorable. His description of the scenes make them come alive in the reader's mind. This book and the characters in it stayed with me long after I had finished reading it. I would highly recommend Pillars of the Earth for anyone interested in the early history of England or for anyone planning a trip to England. I am now very much looking forward to reading the sequel which I have purchased but not yet had time to read.
...

The Pillars of the Earth is an enormous book with a lot of pages and worth every word. As a historical fiction lover, I truly enjoyed this dramatic tale of days past. My only complaint is that the book is so big and heavy, even in paperback- it's difficult for public transportation users to travel with on the commute. I don't want to talk much about the story itself because you should just read it! Quite possibly the best book of my lifetime.
...

Pillars of the Earth is a great read. I had a hard time putting this book down. The characters are captivating, and the author amazed me at how he was able to make them so relatable, due to the expanse of generations and centuries. ...

Ken Follet is one of the best story tellers. His books are intense, thrilling, and the a "can't put it down" kind of author. The first I read was, A Dangerous Fortune and was hooked on getting my hands on everything he's written. I used to hate to read novels for the hell of it. Now, I can't wait for down time to read!...

I loved the Pillars of the Earth. I got the book for Christmas and was put off by the size and my limited time for reading but once I got into the book I could not put it down. Ken Follet's character development and in depth, well developed plot are superb. I went out and acquired a few more of his books after reading this one!...

Tip says "a good solid novel, re-issued" about The Pillars of the Earth

I read this book several years ago, when it was first released. I really enjoyed it as I like historical novels, that aren't of the "ripping bodice" or "softly yielding body" type. I think this has been re-released because Follett released a follow up and there was just too many years between the releases. I've still got my copy, I'm thinking of refreshing my memory, then I'll see if the follow up is as good....

Don't let the size of this tome intimidate you. Ken Follett's Pillars of the Earth is fabulous from end to end. With its subtle, moving narrative and its engaging characters, you'll be drawn in to the story and kept there for the duration. It's hard to believe, but by the time you've finished you won't want it to end....
