dzgrrl says "Suspend the Imagination, See as a Child, Save the Future; Cute!" about The Last Mimzy

The Last Mimsy is a magical study of life, extra-terrestrials, the human species and imagination.

It explores how children are more open to the unexplained and magical than adults, and that may be a good thing--or not, depending on one's own imagination and ability to suspend belief (as children can--which is why so many who see this movie claim it as a favorite!).

****SPOILER ALERT: (Please don't read this section unless you wish to know a plotline.) Some things that aren't immediately understood CAN be eerie until proven harmless, and ultimately, out for the greater good, as the Mimsy are late in the movie.****

The all-to-familiar theme of human supremacy, i.e., believing we are the most intelligent species (certainly the most dominant), comes into play here, as does testing the theory of whether children's beliefs or adult "knowledge" (i.e., science/technology) are more relevant.

In all, The Last Mimsy is a thought-provoking, unique story that adults will enjoy, coupled with "magically delicious,"......

roserighter says "Mimzy was a little bit creepy." about The Last Mimzy

As a mom of two boys, I am always looking for a good family movie. I seem to have a harder and harder time finding something for us all to enjoy. Last week we came across the movie, The Last Mimzy at the rental store. We grabbed it in hopes of watching a magical movie the kids and I could enjoy together.

My Opinion of The Last Mimzy
I'm not sure why I expected something totally different, but I did and we were disappointed with the movie. It was actually about a creepy doll and magical rocks that were alien in nature. The little girl has supposedly been chosen to save the alien by figuring how to build a bridge back to its home. It becomes a matter of national security, but that isn't enough for the parents to realize that something strange is happening to their kids. The adults in The Last Mimzy are slow to catching on to what is going on. Somehow the kids have better instincts than they do.

My boys are 5 and 9. The younger one barely sat through the movie. it did not hold his attention at......

quilter says "sweet movie with positive message for kids" about The Last Mimzy

I liked the story and the performance by the kids and the science teacher; every day people in the middle of something great and managing to rise brilliantly to the occaision. I was disappointed by the parents and the investigators, their characters seemed to have tunnel vision and the actors seemed to be walking through the roles. Overall I think it's a very good movie... I felt wonder and hope as I watched and was reminded how great the human spirit can be, even in small packages....

TheBard says "Ultimately disappointing for a number of reasons" about The Last Mimzy

Bottom-Line: The Last Mimzy was quite quaint, but ultimately unfulfilling; I wanted more than the movie had to offer.

Magic; I mean the real stuff and not the slight-of-hand craft practiced by earth bound magicians, has always been the subject of wonder. Children, as the legend goes, believe in true magic, adults do not. The 2007 movie The Last Mimzy would proffer a rather thoughtful explanation having to do with brain cells or the lack thereof in human adult's verses children. I don't know if I buy it, but I have to keep reminding myself that it's just a movie.

Directed by Robert Shaye (Book of Love), The Last Mimzy chronicles the adventures of brother and sister, Noah (Chris O'Neil) and Emma (Rhiannon Leigh Wryn) Wilder slightly before and after they find a mysterious box on the beach on Whidbey Island in the state of Washington. The Wilder's live a typical upper-middle class existence: mother Jo Wilder portrayed by Joely Richardson (Nip/Tuck, The Patriot, The Affair of the Necklace...
...
