I know so many people who love the Giving Tree. Alot of my friends use this book in their classrooms to teach different social skills. However, I just can't get over how selfish the boy is. I identify with the tree too much, which may be my problem. With that said, I suggest checking it out at the library before buying it. Happy reading!
...

I enjoyed this book when reading it to the boys. They liked it fine the first couple times then quickly grew to think it was too "girly" for them.. They want more action and discoverery than is in this book. The Giving Tree was a warm fuzzy book that we read at bed time till everyone "out" grew it. So for boy's 5 and under is my recommendation. My neice on the other hand still enjoys it and she's almost 8...

This one is a blast from my past. When children's books were truely deep. When Authors didn't dumb down their works. When children had higher readin capacity.

I've loved this book since I was a child. It moved me and helped to build foundations for my moral integrity. This is a MUST HAVE for children. Heck, I think that this is a good book for anyone.
...

This children's book ( The Giving Tree ) is pretty sad but does teach a valuable lesson about what happens when you ignorantly use resources that one doesn't really need. I cannot even compare the relationship between the tree and the boy as a friendship because of the lack of compassion shown by the boy. Every-time I read this book I want to slap someone. ...

The Giving Tree is a book I first read over 30 years ago and have had on my bookshelf ever since. It is one of my favorite all-time books! I read it to my own children and to countless groups of children in classrooms and on retreats. The message of giving, regardless of the cost, is so well stated. Since it is a tree does that does the giving and a boy who does the receiving, there's a sense of fantasy in the talking tree and yet reality to the human only taking without realizing the cost to the giver. It makes me think about whether I have ever been so selfless and I hope it helps those I've read it to try to be more giving individuals as well as thankful to those who have given to them! ...

I've read the book The Giving Tree with both of my sons. The book is so simple to understand, yet gives such an incredible outlook on what it is to give without expecting something in return. The examples of unrestricted love and selflessness in a format children can enjoy make the book enjoyable while allowing for discussion on what the book was about....

The Giving Tree is a book that I encourage all people to read. It teaches a great lesson on sharing what you have with those that mean the most to you. I even had a friend write a college entrance essay on this book!! The Giving Tree made me smile and cry. I think that it is a great gift to give to anyone, regardless of their age. It's a definite classic....

I was first introduce to the book The Giving Tree when I was a young child. It was given to me by my youth minister for a christmas gift. It is well written and illustrated.

The book tells a very nice story about a tree and a young boy. The tree and the young boy meet in the woods and the tree offers herselft to the boy. First branches to swing from, then offering shade on a hot day, an apple to eat and wood to build a house. The book also has a great ending.

I purhcased this book for my daughter and I will be purchasing it for my nieces and nephews and any future grandchildren.
...

In the Giving Tree I see a lot of what women tend to do to themselves -- giving themselves away until they are completely used up. Up it is a very poor lesson for children and adults. On one hand you have boy who is more than willing to allow for the tree to destroy itself on his behalf and the tree who allow itsellf to be used up. In real life we can never really take care of anyone until we learn to take care of ourselves. How much more would the tree have had to offer if were whole?

...

I loved reading The Giving Tree. This is a story of a tree that gives every bit of itself until it appears to have nothing else left to give. Even then, it gives some more. This story is good for when there is any kind of transition occurring. It also shows how just when we think we have given our all, there is more to us than meets the eye....

This is a wonderful children's book. It teaches children a great lesson. The Giving Tree teaches children how to be selfless and caring. It teaches them to appreciate what they have now because you never know when you might lose it. It's not very difficult to understand and it keeps children's attention. Kids will learn to be able to read it on their own because the words are not very difficult and yet htey get th epint accross. it is a great book....

The Giving Tree is a wonderful book for children of all ages. It tells about a tree who loves a boy so much he gives him everything he has to give. It reminds me of God's love for us. In the late 60's I was at a benefit for the kidney foundation in Nashville, Tennessee. In a world that was full of long haired men and woman of that day, a bald headed man walked across the stage. Many years later I found out that this man that stuck out like a sore thumb at that time was Shel Silverstein the author of the Giving Tree. I wish I had gotten his autograph. I love all of his books.
...
