wendypeeples says "Even with Li and Chan it still sucks" about The Forbidden Kingdom

I've watched every Jackie Chan movie and almost every Jet Li movie. The most startling thing about this movie was seeing Jet Li portraying the Monkey King, or whatever he was. First time I've ever seen Li be so giddy and smiley. Nice bit of acting. Chan is always great doing the Drunken Master style. But why did they have to put that teenage boy in there. He was so corny!!! Here's an example of how bad of a character he was. They're walking thru the desert, and he says, "Boy this desert is hot!" Who did the writing on this movie? It's the worst ever.My husband and I decided 1/3 of the way thru the movie to drink beer every time a corny scene came on or that teenager said something corny. Needless to say, we were falling down drunk by the end of the movie. The only redeeming quality of this movie was the action scenes with Jackie Chan and Jet Li. There is one good thing, this movie is clean so you could show it to kids. It's reminiscent of the Never-Ending Story. ......

Warning: I may be a little biased because I am a BIG Jackie Chan fan! ;o)

Directed by Rob Minkoff, The Forbidden Kingdom is an action adventure that stars Jackie Chan and Jet Li. Together in a film for the first time, they make a comically dynamic duo.

A troubled teen who gets walked all over, Jason, played by Michael Angarano, is mystically taken on a journey to discover how strong he truly is. With hilarious slapstick comedy that's fused by the interesting fighting, choreographed by Woo-ping Yuen (THE MATRIX, KILL BILL). This film was shot on location in China. The beautiful scenes and costumes and neato FX really add a nice touch to the quality of the film.

It's not necessarily for those who really enjoy R-rating violent films. This film is more for those who appreciate karate and respectful self defense in a "fun for the whole family" type movie. This clean cut, wholesome film has some awesome messages in the action packed storyline. This is a great film for parents...
...

The Forbidden Kingdom wasn't what the previews made it out to be in the start but it more than lived up to the hype once the plot began to form. Despite the slow start it made up for it throughout the rest of the movie with great action scenes great martial arts and entertaining dialouge...

I ran right out to pick this one up when it was released yesterday and it did not disappoint. It is a great flick, both Jackie Chan and Jet Li play multiple characters which was great and the plot was well written. I kept my attention and I was not predicting the movie scene by scene like some other action/king fu flicks.

Highly recommended......rent it...buy it.....hurry!

...

I enjoyed the Forbidden Kingdom. Jackie Chan is a very diverse person and I enjoy his sense of humor along with his commitment to martial arts. This movie was done along the lines of the older martial arts and I appreciated this greatly. The plot was good and the ending I enjoyed as gave you a warm feeling of things that could be. Jet Li was awesome with his fight scene with Jackie Chan and I enjoyed the techniques of both these outstanding martial artists!...

I had heard some good reviews about this movie. However, I have to differ. Jackie Chan was not that funny, maybe he wasn't given enough opportunities, he was nearly dead or drunk for most of the movie. He was supposed to be some kind of prophet who had to survive by drinking! What kind of message does that send to kids. Way too much fighting and I wasn't expecting witchcraft to be involved. Overall, it was a terrible movie that I would not recommend to anyone....

The Forbidden Kingdom was a good movie, not the best I've ever seen, but it was worth seeing. It has the Kung Fu that people like to see from those old movies, except it was made better with Jackie Chan and Jet Li, who are two great actors. There was laugh-out-loud comedy and pretty good drama.

I'm not sure the real signifigance of the Monkey King, but I felt the plot could have been better if they used something else besides an immortal man who looked and acted like a monkey.

Other than that, it was a pretty good movie and I would recommend seeing it.
...

JanetLynn says "A fun, family-friendly film with a message of hope." about The Forbidden Kingdom

Forbidden Kingdom was fun to watch. It wasn't as intense as Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and some of Jet LI's other movies, nor was it as funny as some of Jackie Chan's, but it was a good blend of the two, which makes sense as they were both in it. I felt that the character development was done more one dimensionally on purpose, to allow for the boy to be the most fully formed character in the story. The other characters were essentially mythical or imaginary characters so were never fully formed outside of the boys head. This didn't trouble any of us. My 17-year old daughter, 13-year old son, husband and myself all found it an entertaining event and will probably purchase it on DVD for future viewing. The message was important, in that it showed that only by standing up to the bullies could the boy actually be free of their domination. It kept the dream like quality even in the end, as Sparrow is revealed along with the Shop Keeper and the Monkey King in their dual rolls.......

shellibyrd says "Interesting storyline" about The Forbidden Kingdom

I love Jackie Chan, and since Fearless, Jet Li. I was never into the 70s kung fu movies, but when you get true artists like Jackie and Jet who are not spring chickens but don't give a clue when you watch them perform those stunts and some of those moves, it's on the level with a ballerina or ballroom dancer. It's like watching art and I loved that part of it. I have alot of respect for people that can do things I can't (things that are legal and moral, ethical, etc) and that's what this is. On top of it the storyline was interesting and I loved Jackie's "dual" character...If I say more it'll give away the end. I also loved Jet's dual character...did everyone catch that he was also the Monkey King at the beginning? My husband caught that.

Another of my favorite aspects of the movie was the "drop-ins" of Jackie's dry and hilarious sense of humor..."Don't you have a running monk?" I laughed out loud!!!

Definitely worth the 7.50 to see it!
...

Just seeing these two legends on screen together made the whole experience worthwhile. Add to the mix a decent, action filled story and you have a powerhouse of a movie that is definately worth the price of admission.

This is a movie that will be fun to have and own on DVD, but MUST be seen on the big screen to truly get a feeling of the action and awe.
...

Hong Kong Phooey is a quote from the movie. Basically it's a pretty good flick, but the action scenes are so long the actually got boring, I wanted them to end so they could get on with the story, which, all things considered, wasn't bad....

I actually thought it was going to be more like Hero or Crouching Tiger, so we left the younger child (7) behind with friends, and took my older 15 yr old who's into martial arts and weapon training, along with her friend who's into anime. Both girls were excited about seeing it, and when they saw it, they loved the whole movie.

I liked it alot, cuz it wasn't like Crouching Tiger, and thought Hero was too "artsy" for me. Although I'm a creative type and can appreciate great cinematography, I'm not fond of every martial art movie, specifically when its too long, or too "preachy" or just not enough humor. I like Jackie Chan's American made movies, and some of Jet Li's work. Jet Li tends to be very violent, remembering "Unleashed". So I get cautious about taking the younger one to his movies. But she enjoys watching Rush Hour, so she was a little disappointed not to see Jackie. After seeing it now, I feel comfortable that if your kids like martial arts and Power Rangers,...
...

I was really excited to see this movie. I love Jackie Chan and am a fan of Jet Li. The two of them together? Fantastic! My boyfriend was just as eager and we went opening day. I thought the movie was a good one, but not what I was expecting. My boyfriend put it best when he said it was too family for him. I enjoyed the action sequences and the interaction between Jet Li and Jackie Chan. I did not like the boy in it however, he annoyed th crap out of me. No particular reason, I just wanted to smack him. The storyline was fun and enjoyable. I would reccommend this movie to anyone who is a fan of Jackie Chan and Jet LI. Kids would be okay at it, although there are random violent images that might be too much for the younger set. Overall it was enjoyable, but not one of my absolute favorites. B+...
