khakisack says "My baby loves this best- and I love that I can sterilize it!" about The First Years Soothie Pacifier

I work in the newborn intensive care unit as a nurse, and Soothie Pacifiers are the pacifiers we use in the hospital. I've always thought they were ugly, and never planned on using them with my own babies- until lactation recommended it because of the straight nipple shape which is more like a breast for nursing babies and helps avoid nipple confusion, according to the lactation consultant at the hospital. So I ended up buying these as well as the cute Gerber ones- and guess which ones my baby prefers? Yep, my son won't take the cute Gerber pacifiers, he spits them across the room, but he will go to town with the soothie pacifier! We ended up getting thrush after my son was at the children's hospital on antibiotics and oxygen for an infection- and the pediatrician told us we had to throw all pacifiers away EXCEPT the soothies. The way other pacifiers are made, there is a pocket inside the nipple, and you can't sterilize it. The soothies have no pocket and you can boil them and completely...
...

The soothie pacifiers are great! With my second child, which is now 4 months old, they gave this pacifier with us in the hospital. It's funny, because the babies are so tiny and the pacifier is so big when it's in their mouth, but it's really a great pacifier! I thought you could only get these from the medical website, but they're in stores!! And when i found they had pink, I was so excited!! I'm a pink girl and so is my daughter! They also have blue, green and purple i believe. They are also naturally scented with vanilla as well i think.
...

Bookoholic says "Baby loves this pacie" about The First Years Soothie Pacifier

Soothie was my son's pick of the pacifer. Altho there is one other I can get him to suck on he prefers his soothie. His first soothie was the premie soothie which is purple and you can only get at the hospital. The newborn and sixth month plus you can get at the store. I have found that they are cheeper then other pacifiers. So if you are looking to safe money with a future baby. I would pick this pacifer I will probably use it with the rest of my children. The do have a soothie pacifier clip that you can buy at target or walmart for it. I bought one and it works great and looks cute. The only problem with the clip is that it makes the pacifer bigger around and can sometimes prevent the child from being able to suck on the pacifier. I do use it when we are out and about and sometimes at home, but I have to turn it to the side so my son can suck on the pacifier. The color for newborn pacifer is green just encase you don't know the sex of your baby, no need to worry about what color to get...
...

coqui77 says "Former Gerber Nuk user, Soothie is a great pacifier" about The First Years Soothie Pacifier

I got this pacifier for free like most people, from the hospital when my fourth child was born. With my other three kids, I used the Gerber Nuk brands. My youngest wouldn't take the Gerber Nuk pacifier so I stuck with the Soothie one. I have read that it is supposed to be better for breastfeeding, but I can't say for sure. I can say that I have had a easier time nursing with this child than I did with the other three, but it may not have just been the pacifier.

All in all, if I was going to have a fifth child, I would use this kind over the Gerber Nuk variety.

Pros:

My baby can put it in her mouth easily by herself

Unlike the Gerber Nuk for example, the entire pacifier is the same material so even if she puts the wrong side in, she doesn't hurt her mouth.

The bottles that Soothie makes are almost the same as the pacifier so the transition is easy. (I have had issues before with the child taking a bottle b/c the nipple was so different).

Cons:

Contrary to what some say, there...
...

hudson2001 says "Worked great for us, well worth a try at their inexpensive cost." about The First Years Soothie Pacifier

I didn't want to give my baby a pacifier AT ALL. I was paranoid that since I was breastfeeding, that any pacifier was going to ruin things... but we were at the hospital for a test and the baby was fussing a bit and the nurse asked if we had a pacifier and I said no. She reached into the cupboard and pulled out one of these, saying they were highly recommended. We took it from her, thanked her, and threw it in the diaper bag. (We didn't try it right then because, as I mentioned, I did NOT want my baby to use a pacifier.)

And then came a time when he was really fussy. And we had just watched The Happiest Baby on the Block DVD and learned that Sucking is something that, ironically, PACIFIES a baby and calms them down... so I gave the baby the Soothie...and he loved it! LOVED IT! I immediately went out and bought two more 2-packs (from Target and Babies R Us). I also bought the next-stage pacifiers (one step up from newborn).

Of course if he is super agitated (or hungry) then it won't stay...
...

My baby only used these Soothie pacifiers but the only problem was that they would smash her nose...next time I will try to get some that won't do that.

I never thought after using Playtex disposable I would go back to a reusable bottle. I bought the soothies to send to my sister as a gift and decided to get a set for myself to try. I also had my trusted Playtex and a box of drop ins. My baby came and she had far to much trouble with the Playtex I tried her on the Soothie. I am thrilled with the out come. The nipple design is so simple you would not think it to prevent the baby from swallowing air. But it works. She does not spit up and hardly has to burp. My mind has definitely been changed and if you are in the market for a good reusable bottle I would say this is the way to go. Plus with a matching pacifier to help them stay with one feeling First years figured it out. They definitely know what parents want and need.
...

mcginty-hemphill says "Best Invention EVER!" about The First Years Soothie Pacifier

I have to say that the Soothie pacifier is the only pacifier I will ever use. To begin with I had chosen a different pacifier for my baby to use, but when we tried it at the hospital the nipple was just too long for her tiny mouth and she gagged on it. Luckily the hospital provided a Soothie pacifier for us, and our daughter took it instantly! We quickly went to the hospital gift shop and bought about ten more of them (in case we lost a few!). These are the only pacifier that my daughter will take, and we even went out and bought two of the Soothie bottles. (We also use some bottle that take liners, but we usually end up washing and reusing the soothie bottles over and over again instead!) I will definitely continue using this pacifier and I'm going to recommend it to every mother I know!
...

When I had my second daughter I offered her the gerber nuk pacifier first. That is the one that I had wanted for her. She didn't want much to do with it. So, while at the hospital I asked the nurse to please see if they had the soothie pacifier that they used to hand out when I had my first daughter.

My daughter took to the soothie just as fast as my other daughter. The hospital offers a curved soothie that doesn't cover the nose. It's a better version but this version is okay too. The one piece design makes this pacifier a very clean solution. Plus, nipple breakage is not an issue.

I know thier not as cute, but they are the sensible solution.
...
Prior to my son's birth, I had this mindset against pacifiers and if my child ever got attached, I would just take it away anyway...

Well, I have my son now and he's 15 months, still attached to his precious binky. I can't take it away because he relies on it so much and when he discovers that it has disappeared, he'll bring down the house with his outrage. I'm still a bit against it, but it brings comfort to my little boy.

...

I had tried nearly every pacifier on the market for my fussy infant. I saw the Soothie pacifier in the store and thought the shape of it was odd and wondered to myself why on earth any baby would suck on it. Then I started noticing babies using it. I bought one and now I wonder why I didn't get one before. My baby loves it. While other pacifiers come in different sizes for different ages, the Soothie really is one size fits all. I can't say it enough, we think its great...

As a healthcare provider for new mother's and infants, and a breastfeeding advocate, I am natually inclined to not support the use pf pacifiers. Some infants however, have an overwhelming need to suck, and this can be quite uncomfortable for new mom learning to breastfeed. This is how the soothie pacifier can help. Once a mother has identified the difference between the desire to eat and the desire to suck, ( No, babies do not always want to eat when they ellicit the rooting reflex) a soothie pacifier can be used to "save the day."

I have never met a baby who did not like the soothie pacifiers, from preemie's to 6 month old infants, and beyond, I feel it is the #1 preferred pacifier by babies. The newborn or green soothies can be used for quite a while and then you may transition to the pink or blue Super soothies which are for older babies, but a lot of babies do not like these stiffer, thicker pacifiers. They can be sterilized and used over and over and over again. ...
...
