Barack Obama followed up his first book "Dreams From My Father" with the "Audacity of Hope". While Dreams From My Father was more about his childhood, The Audacity of Hope gives the reader a great look into his political philosophies, tribulations as a young politician, and the aspirations for the American Dream. One might describe the political philosophy of Barack Obama, as detailed in the book, as an individual that is caught in the middle of an often polarizing social and political structure. While it is often the case that Democrats and Republicans make political grandstanding about their differences, Obama takes the approach of embracing the things that both sides can and do agree on. For example, on the very controversial issue of abortion, Obama acknowledges that we can all agree, Democrats and Republicans, that we as a society should do everything we can to dramatically reduce the amount of unwanted pregancies. This middle-of-the-road approach is exactly the kind of moderate philosophy...
...

mindyvol says "Barack Obama: I'm just not that into him" about The Audacity of Hope: Thoughts on Reclaiming the American Dream

I'm not a fan of Barack Obama and I did not vote for him in the presidential election. However, I still felt the need to learn more about the man whom America chose as our current president. So I decided to read The Audacity of Hope, which was written by him and published in 2006.

I honestly tried to keep an open mind while reading this book. I really wanted to get to know Barack Obama and understand why so many people are enamored by him. He's personable. I get that. He's intelligent. I get that too. But really, after forcing myself to read The Audacity of Hope (and going past my library due date because reading it was a chore to me), I'm just not that into him.

The book is set up into sections such as Opportunity, Faith, and Race. While the section titles sound interesting, a lot of them are boring and hard to get into. Also, the overuse of big words turned me off. I felt like Mr. Obama was trying too hard to impress his readers. I don't need a lot...
...

Audacity of Hope by Barack Obama: I did buy this book to be sure who and what this guy is all about. I suppose you could say that it confirmed what I already thought. Before voting I wanted to be sure what people were saying was factual. Its boring in some areas. Surprising in others. I was afraid things I'd heard weren't right. Well now I'm sure of my feelings. He isn't all hes seems !!! ...

Obama's book "Audacity of Hope" was enlightening to read. I wanted to learn more about Obama and his personality, upbringing, and beliefs, etc. I also wanted to find the truths and non-truths about Obama. Many of the media and others have seeped rumors as I call them and I thought that there was only one way to find out the truth--read the book. The book is a bit slow and boring at first but then gets into more of learning about the true Obama and it has enlightened me and given me a better sense of who Obama is and where he came from. It has also actually helped me determine who I will vote for on November 4th. Read it yourself and maybe it will do the same for you....

I can't afford to be bamboozled by a silver-tongued, sophiscated man full of ear-wash, who claims to have been raised in deprivation or improverishment and yet was sent to costly private schools that any mother could wish for. I am not impressed. Please spare me the rhetoric....

Are you kidding me!Reclaiming the american dream. What the heck is that!I'm gonna tell it like it is in this country! The american dream is for "WHITE PEOPLE."What the media is doing to Obama is deplorable! The closer he gets to winning the democratic nomination, the more ridiculous crap they come up with to try to humiliate him.Obama idea of the american dream is so far fetched, maybe he doesn't deserve to be president. There is still to much racism in this country to even hope for change.I have been through some of these small towns in Indiana where they wouldn't let me even buy a hamburger because i was black and i was with five white friends.Same thing happened to me in a small town in Arizona.Do you understand what i am trying to say?I have been kicked out of a few restaurants for being 'BLACK!'And i had white people with me on all three occassions. This wasn't in the 60's or 70's,it was in the late 80's and early 90's.America is ready for change but a black president isn't one of them.The...

...

What a great read! I am not very politically knowledable, but this was easy to understand. It gives the reader great hope for change in layman's terms. This book provides a nice history lesson too and how the country has changed for the worse since the Bush administration.

This book shows Barack Obama as a down to earth man who really wants to change our country for the better. He wants to help the average American and the middle class citizen, of which makes up the majority of the country. I was impressed, and a little bit surprised with his quotes from Warren Buffet, who is the second richest man in the world. Mr. Buffet feels that he should be paying more taxes, as should the wealthiest people in the USA. But the current administration keeps giving more tax cuts to the richest.

An enjoyable book and good insight into the state of the United States of America. I would recommend it to anyone who is a citizen of the USA.
...

The Audacity of Hope was one of the best books I have read recently. I'm not usually a person who reads non-fiction, yet I found this engaging and moving. He wrote with a language not of a politician trying to twist things, but with the voice of a person. He seems so real and honest and trustworthy. It was very interesting to hear what he had to say about how America needs to change. ...

To the Point
We ordered The Audacity of Hope: Thoughts on Reclaiming the American Dream after reading Dreams from My Father (reviewed) both by Barack Obama. No matter what your politics this is a really great book or in my case listen.

(Please read American Evita by Christopher Anderson if you are thinking of voting for her.)

A Closer View

We purchased this 5-CD (6 hours) audio book through www.amazon.com for about $20.00.

It doesn't start where his first book left off, going to Harvard Law School, which is what I expected. He does however make many references to his law school days.

It's my view that Dreams from My Father really makes a good prelude into his second book but I would recommend The Audacity of Hope even if you haven't or won't read Thoughts from My Father. The Audacity of Hope was published in 2006.

There is no question that Barack is brilliant. He uses words of which I don't know the meaning but he never comes across as arrogant or condescending. These words are few and far between....
...
