calimvr says "Schnidler's List" about Ten Depressing Movies Worth Watching

I watched Schnidler's List with my oldest daughter and cried so much. I don't think I could watch this movie again because it was emotionally draining and was like 3 hours long, but the story was amazing. It is produced by Steven Spielberg and is based on an actual person, Oskar Schnidler, who was played by the amazing Liam Neeson. A Polish man and his Jewish bookkeeper (Ben Kingsley) helped save hundreds of Jews from being killed by the Nazi regime. He hired 1,200 Jewish people to work in his factory, thereby, saving their lives. They were needed to work in his factory for the benefit of the Germans during World War II. The movie is in black and white, but there is a touching part where Schindler sees a pretty little Jewish girl in a red dress. That was the only part of the movie that was in color -- that little girl in a red dress. Then later, to his horror, he sees that same little girl, in color, in the red dress being carried away dead. Such a warm, emotional movie that shows...
...

I loved the Ten Depressing Movies Worth Watching review by Telpher so much that I thought it deserved a sequel. Part of my enjoyment of her list came from the fact that she had some movies on there that I hadn't seen and one I hadn't even heard from. I intend to watch those at some time in the future and thank Telpher for drawing them to my attention.

I got to thinking that Telpher and many of the rest of you may be younger than I (a LOT of people are younger than I, come to think of it -- what a depressing thought!) and for this reason I may have had a chance to enjoy some great depressing films that the rest of you might have missed.

Here we go:

The Lost Weekend starring Ray Milland and Jane Wyman. One is too much and 100 are never enough for the tragic alcoholic center figure and the people who love him.

Double Indemnity starring Fred MacMurray, Barbara Stanwyck, and Edward G. Robinson as the crusty old insurance veteran who figures out what the larcenous pair are up...
...

Ads for current movies often rely on the whole "feel good" factor, but some of my favorite movies do anything but make the viewer feel good. I know some people feel that movies ought to be light and easy because they're a form of escapism. For me, though, I'm often more interested in working my way through an engaging, difficult and even depressing story, than in watching a movie that leaves me as soon as the lights go up and the credits roll. Here are my picks when it comes to great movies that are anything but "feel good" films.

Days of Heaven - A very young Richard Gere and Brooke Adams play lovers travelling around America as itinerant farm workers during the early 20th century. In order to avoid problems, they pose as brother and sister. When a gentle, young and very wealthy rancher, who happens to be terminally ill, falls in love with Adams' character, Gere convinces her to lead the rancher on and convince him to marry her, just so she can inherit his vast fortune. Nothing good...
...
