bobjoe says "TV Guide is a pathetic waste of everyone's time and money" about TV Guide

The national TV Guide was first published on April 3, 1953. Its premiere issue cover featured a photograph of Lucille Ball's and Desi Arnaz's newborn son, Desi Arnaz, Jr. TV Guide as a national publication resulted from Walter Annenberg's Triangle Publications' purchase of numerous regional television listing publications such as TV List, TV Forecast, TV Digest, Television Guide and TV Guide. The launch as a national publication with local listings in April, 1953 became an almost instant success with the magazine becoming the most read and circulated magazine in the country by the 1960s. The initial cost was just 15¢ per copy. In addition to subscriptions, TV Guide was sold from familiar grocery store counters nationwide. Until the 1980s, each issue's features were promoted in a television commercial. Under Triangle Publications, TV Guide continued to grow not only in circulation, but in recognition as the authority on television programming with articles from both staff and contributing......

Sorry the new T V Guide is like reading an enteertainment magazine, not a T V Guide. Get rid of the stupid articles and go back to just listing what is playing. You are T V Guide not Entertainment Tonight. 20 oages of junk and 1/2 a page of listing, so small you need a magnafying glass to see them. They even got rid of the size. Compact and easy to handle. To the larger magazine style. I did not order a magazine. I ordered T V Guide....

I think the TV Guide is full of too much fluff and stuff about actors and not enough guide infomation. When I want to watch TV, I would like to look at the Guide and find what's on, what time, the channel and a review. The TV Guide starts programing guide at 8PM. What about daytime TV?...

I thought it was just me who was disappointed with the new TV Guide. When it changed to a bigger magazine I was excited and I had a 3 year subscription. I cancelled my subscription after the first year. They no longer had weekends in full details or local daytime or mornings any longer. The articles and pictures were good, but if I wanted pics and articles I would buy people or other gossip magazine. I wanted TV listings, they did not provide enough so I dumped it. I had been a subscriber for many years prior to the change....

I don't know why they changed it so much. It was much easier to read before and provided a clearer picture to the shows. Why not leave things alone. What is with putting two weeks together, come on we pay enough for the magazine. I know I won't renew my subscription....

a100indecisions says "The on-screen cable/TiVo guide will give you more info than this" about TV Guide

The absolute worst thing I can't stand about TV Guide is how free they are with spoilers about your favorite shows. If they're not blowing a plot point in the articles, they give you everything you (dont) need to know in the show descriptions.

TV Guide changed its format recently to something that is more like Entertainment Weekly - shorter articles with less substance, and more celebrity "fluff" than descriptions about shows. When they changed the size of the magazine to the larger glossy, they lost a lot of quality content. It is difficult to find out what is on when it isn't prime time, and the new grids give less room for details.

The on-screen guide that comes with your cable box (or TiVo) offers more description than the TV Guide Magazine, and as a result, I seldom read the magazine anymore. I will not renew when my subscription ends.
...
