TheBard says "Visually stunning, but lacking in human interest" about Sunshine

Bottom-Line: For the most part I found Sunshine entertaining.

I like Science Fiction; especially those stories set in cold reaches of outer space. There is something about outer space that holds an endless fascination for me. So when I heard about Sunshine (2007) a futuristic movie about a mission to the dying sun, naturally I was intrigued, never mind the fact that our sun is not set to die for another, oh, 5 billion years from now!

Despite that one glaring plot pothole, over all Sunshine is a decent movie, full of gee-wiz special effects, and creditable if not somewhat staid acting. And while the main premise, saving mankind for the millionth time, is rather trite, the Icarus II is one cool spaceship.

The Story

Sunshine takes place in the not-too-distant future. Planet Earth is in the grips of another ice age brought on this time by a dying sun (factoid: when the Sun actually starts to die it will increase steadily in luminosity not decrease)....
...

vytas says "I think I developed multiple personalities watching this one" about Sunshine

I was looking to try out the new iTunes movie rental feature and stumbled across this movie - Sunshine. I have to say that I had never heard of it and the central idea for the plot (that was contained in the description of the rental) seemed that it would require a bit of a stretch to accept (reigniting the sun via a detonation of a bomb near its surface). But the reviews on iTunes seemed pretty positive and some of the comments even alluded to the film being a tip of the hat to 2001: A Space Odyssey. Being a sci-fi movie fan I decided to hit the rental button and take my chances.

I was pleasantly surprised by the well crafted visuals of the movie. On that front, it far exceeded my expectations. The story was, for the most part, straight forward though it definitely had undercurrents of crew members on the verge of losing their sanity as their several year trip to the sun wore on. At times, the undercurrent was subtle, and at others it was hallucinogenic. Sunshine itself was cast as a character......

Fan-of-Leisure says "Is this a good film, or did my brain just fry?" about Sunshine

It's 50 years in the future and our sun is dying. It needs a jump-start, so we
send a small group of astronauts to do just that. A mind-fuk ensues.

Entertainment Weekly gave this movie an 'A'. I had never seen any movie rated
higher than an A- from them (except for 'Dark Ride', which they gave an A+), and they are usually pretty good about rating films. So, when they give a movie that I never heard of an A (that isn't a artsy movie that you have to read, rather than watch) then I have to give it a shot. The bottom line is that this is a really good film. An A, however, I think is a little high. But, I'm a little high right now as well and I have no idea what's going on. As our
little group of astronauts gets closer to the sun, they get a little high as well, and they have really no idea what the hell is happening either. Is there really suddenly an extra astronaut on the ship, or is it just my brain frying? If you can get your mind around the whole brain frying thing, you might enjoy...
...
