I had a used 1998 Subaru Forester and loved it, so of course I was looking for another Forester when I was in the market for a new car. We live on a hill and get plenty of snow and ice in the winter, so all-wheel drive is a must. The Forester has lots of room for groceries and what-not in the back, but it's small enough that it drives like a car. I was disappointed to find that they've redesigned the Forester for 2009: the car I test drove was larger and handled more truck-like. However, they also had a used 2008 on the lot with only 10,000 miles - that's my baby now!
...

joe90 says "Great to drive but wish I waited for the 2009 version" about Subaru Forester - 2008

I was in the market for a small SUV or wagon and spent a couple of years thinking about the different models on the road and researching the pros and cons of each. I was hoping that a hybrid vehicle would come on the market that would meet my needs and be within my price range but my previous car was on its last legs and it was time to take the plunge.

I test drove the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, the VW Passat, and the small SUVs made by Hyundai and Kia. Driving the Forester just blew them all out of the water. The experience is much more like driving a passenger car than an SUV. Handling is just fantastic and is especially evident in wet weather--the all wheel drive is superb for wet, slippery roads and hills--and also when taking corners a little on the fast side: none of that top heavy, "Am I going to topple over?" feeling that one gets in an SUV. No wonder it receives so many "Best in Class for Safety" awards.

I got the premium version with the extra large sunroof, heated front seats,......

Tinkertoi says "A safe vehicle at an excellent value" about Subaru Forester - 2008

I put a LOT of research into the purchase of this vehicle for a dear widowed friend of mine and her two small children. She had never bought a car before and since I am a highly educated consumer she entrusted the task to me.

The major requirements were that it had to be all wheel drive (we live where bad weather can be an issue), excellent marks in safety features and crash test and, as a new driver, she had to be comfortable driving it.

As a devotee of the non-biased Consumer Reports I narrowed the field to 3 models. The Toyota Rav4, the Subaru Forrestor and the Honda CR-V. They had similar price ranges and going in I really thought the Rav 4 was going to be the winner.

I was VERY surprised that not only was the Rav 4 a poor ride, but the "base model" price barely included a steering wheel. The controls for everything from the dashboard to the seats were not well placed or easy to use. The dealership was obnoxious and the salesperson took the attitude that "our cars are in such demand that...
...

sackbut says "A small SUV with all-wheel drive, good mileage, & nice handling." about Subaru Forester - 2008

If you want a small SUV-type vehicle, there are plenty of options: Honda CRV or Element, Toyota RAV-4, Ford Escape, etc. However, if you want one with all-wheel drive at a reasonable price and with good gas mileage, don't overlook the Subaru Forester. It has a 16-valve 4-cylinder boxer engine (similar in layout to that of a Porsche) with pretty good acceleration. Mileage around town is in the low 20's; on the highway expect about 27 or more, which is better than a 2WD Honda Element. And it goes in the snow.

The Forester comes in a range of models from the basic 2.5X up through the LL Bean deluxe trim. If you want most of the features of the LL Bean but don't care about leather seats, go for the 2.5x with the Premium Package. This gives you 4-wheel disc brakes, aluminum wheels, a moonroof, 6-CD changer with mp3 player jack, SIRIUS radio compatibility, climate control, heated seats and mirrors, 8-way power driver's seat, leather wrapped steering wheel and shift and brake handles,...
...

tangerine says "Comfy interior and great gas mileage make this a good ride." about Subaru Forester - 2008

The new Subaru Forester XL LLBean looks great and has good gas mileage. I liked the laid-back dealership sell style, which was one of the selling points. If you are looking for safety, this car rates high with Consumer Reports with 5 stars in the crash ratings. This particular model also has stability around corners as part of its programming.
It sits 2 inches higher off the ground then previous models and comes with temperature controls (set it between 65 and 85) as well as leather seats and a standard sun/moon roof.
And finally although it doesn't come as a hybrid model, it has great gas mileage (between 20 and 30 mpg) which makes for great savings on commutes and trips.

...
