In my senior year of high school a representative from CUNY (the City University of New York) made a reference to Stony Brook that it was a "party school...the people that flunk out end up in CUNY." Little did I know he was right. I did flunk out, but not exactly. I was not kicked out by Stony Brook, but rather I was pressured into going to Queens College by my father. Stony Brook has a great deal of distractions on campus, and dorming was not the right epxerience for me. That's why I am disappointed that Queens College has choosen to build hostels on its campus, which will certainly deteriorate the quality of learning there. Stony Brook is diverse, and there are options for kosher, halal, and vegetarian dietary options. It was Professor Sara Lipton in my HIST 101 that advised me to become a history major in my freshman year. I took the course as a requirement, and it was with that class that I fell in love with history. There is a free shuttle bus that goes to and from the Long Island...
...

A long time graduate of Stony Brook University I can say that it was one of the most pleasant times of my life. The life is great, easy going and fun. The education is phenomenal. The professors are concerned and involved. Thanks for all you did.
...

I went to Stony Brook from Jan 2002- December 2004, when I graduated. I am from Nassau county, and originally wanted to go far away to school, and had a terrible experience in Florida. After my first semester, I transfered to Stony Brook, and loved my time there.
At first it was hard to make friends- mainly because I was transfering in between semesters, and spent a lot of time off campus, but after semesters changed, and later getting an on campus job, things changed for the better.
I loved the majority of my classes, and some that I took changed my academic course. After taking intro to art history pt1, I decided to make Art History my minor. I ended up taking a bunch of classes in different topics, and the women's studies program let me know I only needed 2 more classes to complete a minor, so I did.
Some classes can be very large, but I was also in small ones- the smallest I think had 7 students total. In the bigger ones, if you don't have access to the professor as easily, TAs are a......

No matter what princeton review and others say. This is not a bad school. I know it is not top in the rankings and there are numerous human beings out there who would criticize this school. Also, I know it may not be the dream school that everyone wants to go to, but I can tell you that it is not a bad school. The tuition is around 13000 dollars (out of state) and it is a pretty cheap school
...

This school is definitely the place to go! IF you are looking for a state school I really suggest this one.

This school is more focused on the sciences but I was a non-science major and loved EVERY MINUTE OF IT!

The classes are VERY challenging for the most part and It's really makes you think. classes really keep you on top of your game.

Be careful, the classes could be huge (there is a 1,000 person lecture center). And a lot of times you need to seek out Professors.

As a non-dorming student it was challenging. When there is snow on Long Island my hour commute turned int 4 to 5 hours one way. The parking is bad sometimes. I usually parked a mile off campus everyday. But yes the do provide buses and there are some pretty nice bus drivers. Talk to some of them there are some pretty cool stories you hear. Classes can be difficult to get into when signing up for classes but most teachers will try to help you to get into the classes.

The school is affordable for the education......
