Oregonguy says "Rip-off, do not buy." about Staples MailMate(TM) Shredder

We used the Staples Mailmate shredder to shred old-fashioned credit card carbons, approx 100 per week for 12 weeks. This is very light paper. (We had to use an old-school credit card swiper until our computerized gear was set up.) The Mailmate died after four months. We had shredded on CD right after purchase just to see if it would work, and it did. That was the heaviest use the shredder ever received.
...

officewiz says "Messy Piece of Junk" about Staples MailMate(TM) Shredder

The Staples Mail Mate Shredder is good at schredding paper and cds. However, everytime you empty it it makes a huge mess on the floor and everywhere. Also, the drawer gets jammed shut if you have too much paper. It looks only half full, but won't open. We empty daily and often. We need a new shredder after less than a year because this one is unusable because the drawer won't open to be emptied. We sent the first one in with this problem (paying a huge amount in postage), and they returned us a new shredder in the same model. Now when I contacted Staples w/ the same problem, they say because we don't cover this in the 1 year warranty. Don't buy this messy piece of junk.
...

LikesTheOldDays says "Good idea with fatal design flaw; handyman fixable." about Staples MailMate(TM) Shredder

Like many others who have purchased a MailMate, we were impressed with the idea and ability of the machine - at first. Then it just quit. No jams. No overuse. No overheat. Just quit. Seems to be an issue with all MailMate models.

I called Staples, and after moving up the food chain to corporate, finally got a credit for this machine that didn't last 6 months of light use. They were going to just give us half, but the coupon arrived for the full amount, so thanks, Staples.

Unlike others, I then took the shredder apart, identified and fixed the problem. The problem is a 5 amp fuse soldered to the main circuit board. It should probably be a slo-blow type, but apparently is not. I removed it, soldered a couple of wires in place of it and hooked their other ends to a fuse holder I mounted on the case (giving wide berth to the shredder mechanism/motor.) Now, when the fuse blows (which hasn't yet; I'm using slo-blow type) I'll just replace it.
...

dynamitetaxlady says "Small yet powerful" about Staples MailMate(TM) Shredder

The Mailmate shredder from Staples is great. One of the biggest factors that sold me on buying this shredder was the price, I got it for only $29 and that was because of a price error. (remember any price still advertised they must honor it) It also came with free sheets to keep it clean. I also like the fact that it can be placed practically anywhere; on a desk, counter, under a table, on a shelf. I also like the sleek look of it (the black and stainless steel). I especially like that it can shred credit cards and an entire junkmail envelope. But there are a couple of things I don't like, such as it does not do the criss-cross or diamond cuts, its small so I have to fold regular size documents in half and because it's so small I'm always having to dump the bucket, but hey for the price I can deal with the few defaults.
...

mysticstarfish says "I Used The MailMate for My Own Protection Until....." about Staples MailMate(TM) Shredder

****Below you will find my original review on this product. I must amend this review to include the product is an absolute waste of money. My original review was written in October, 2008. Since then, I have used this product on a bi-weekly basis for disposing junk mail. It is now the beginning of February, 2009 and the motor completely burned out. I did not abuse the product in any way. As a matter of fact, I never put a credit card or folded mail into it. Nothing that would strain the motor. This shredder is not cheap; actually it is quite pricey.

My best advice to you about this product would be not to buy it!*****

The MailMate is a counter top paper shredder distributed by Staples. MailMate has an attractive black and chrome design and fits onto my kitchen counter perfectly. It is a little larger than my toaster.

I first saw this product at a friend's home. I loved the concept of it; you open your mail, read it and then deposit it into the shredder. ...
...

Unless you only need to shred a couple of pieces of paper don't buy this shredder. After a short amount of time the unit overheats and shuts down and after just one year of owning the shredder it stopped working completely. Staples did not stand behind their product and told me there is nothing they could do and all I could do was purchase another one.
...

paperdoll82 says "It sucks" about Staples MailMate(TM) Shredder

I was delighted when I first bought this two months ago. It shreds paper like a dream.

That is, until it dies.

I've had two of these in two months' time. One died after two weeks; the other, a sturdier model, I assume, limped along for two months until it died in the midst of shredding this morning. No warning, no reason. It's dead.

No paper is clogging it. The container is empty -- and it was close to empty when it died.

Good thing the guy hoodwinked me into buying the extended warranty, huh? I can't wait to go up there today and tell them what a piece of crap it is -- and wait for them to give me another one in exchange. Let's just hope it lasts two months.

Save yourself some time and money -- DON'T BUY IT.
...
We got this shredder over the holidays, and I have to admit I'm a big fan. I really like that it's designed to be set on top of a desk or table rather than on the floor. It chops up cds, credit cards, staples, 5 page stacks of paper, and can probably turn scrap wood into toothpicks.

My only nitpick is that I wish it were diamond cut, rather than 2in by 1/4in rectangles, but that's really really minor.

I wouldn't trust the chomping of my sensitive documents to any other household appliance (or pet).
...

This was a great purchase from Staples! I was looking for a new shredder to attack the loads of junk mail/credit card offers etc building up at home. I purchased this great compact one and it is awesome! This shredder can handle up to 8 pages at a time and it also shreds credit cards and cd's. It cuts the papers into fine, small, inch long strips making it impossible to figure out bank and credit card info. The handle on the front makes it easy to pull the tray out and dump out your shreds. I highly recommend this for anyone's home use and maybe even a small business owner. ...

Mustangmike says "The easiest and attractive way to destroy sensitive documents." about Staples MailMate(TM) Shredder

Staples recently introduced The MailMate shredder. How brilliant! It is only the size of a (large) coffeemaker, and somewhat appears as one. It can sit easily on a kitchen counter where you open, or bring in the mail. It also can easily sit on the corner of a desk.

The beauty of the MailMate is the function. It will shred (cross cut) unopened mail, inclufing those pesky credit card offers that include the fake plastic credit cards with your name on them. It will also destroy CDs/DVD's credit cards, and papers with staples in them.

The only drawback I see, is that pages must be folded to a half sheet to fit the compact design.
...
