Okjayhawkgirl says "One of the worst cat foods out there" about Special Kitty cat food

Special Kitty should come with a warning to anyone that owns a neutered male cat. Having worked as a veterinary technician for 4 years and having male cats myself, it makes me cringe when someone tells me they are feeding Special Kitty. This particular cat food, and others of similar quality are known to cause a higher incidence of urinary blockage in neutered male cats. This condition can only be treated with a VERY expensive surgery or a procedure to try and unblock your kitty, which also very expensive and often times doesn't work. Male cats have a very small urethra, and can get a mucous plug that blocks the ability to pass urine. This can occur in any male neutered cat, but occurs more often with poor quality cat food. Females are not at risk for this to happen, due to their anatomy.

I had a neutered male cat several years ago that got a blockage, and luckily at the time I had the funds to pay for surgery to save him. I believe it was around $1,500 at the time and that...
...

jenn35 says "Average food for an average price." about Special Kitty cat food

Special Kitty cat food started out at a lower price compared to other brands of cat food. However as the years have passed the Speical Kitty brand has seemed to catch up to other cat food in price. The cats seem to like Speical Kitty and will eat it...but not nearly as much as other cat food brands. The only time this cat food ends up being a really good deal is when they add extra food to the bag for free. Although, this is rare. I would suggest buying an equivilant size bag of another brand in the same price range. The cats will enjoy it better. It's an average food at regular price....

Really like the price of this cat food, especially with several cats. However, after reading some of the other reviews, I may have to rethink my opionion of this cat food. The word limit really, really, really stinks and I don't like having to use someone else pro or con - why can't I write my own feelings....

jennifermorris says "You get what you pay for" about Special Kitty cat food

Well, the saying "you get what you pay for" pretty much sum it up! Special Kitty brand food is made up of mostly grains and filler. There really is not much real meat in this food-and cats are carnivores after all, they NEED real meat to be healthy! I own 5 indoor cats and a dog and live on a fixed income, so I am all about saving money. But this stuff really does not save you money in the long run. This food is cheap and made my cats' fur dull. They did not really like the flavor very much and it seemed to all go straight through them. I switched to a slightly more expensive brand name cat food and now my cats seem healthier. Their coats are shiny and they seem to be able to digest the brand name food much better. The bottom line is, don't buy this stuff if you want happy healthy cats....

Special kitty brand is cheaper, and good quality. I usually buy this brand for my cat. Now I'm trying to keep her from gaining weight cause she is getting fat. I did try indoor Purina and she didn't seem like she liked it as much. I'm going to try a different flavor this time....

This cat food will fill your cat up, but with what? Well, I will tell you...it has very little nutritional value. My two cats were also alleric to it! There coats were dull and most of the food seemed to go right throuh them. I am usually a big beliver in products from this store, but save yourself some time and money. Spend a bit more on cat food that actually is nutrtious and benefits your cats all-around health....

itamu2 says "Can you say, "Sawdust"?" about Special Kitty cat food

When I fed my cats Special Kitty, they were always hungry. They'd eat what was in their bowls and meow for more. I talked to my vet because I thought there was something wrong. When he asked me what I was feeding them I told him Special Kitty. He said it was the equivalent to feeding them sawdust, with little to no nutrition and basically all filler. I too am on a limited budget but switched them to Maxximum Nutrition a little at a time. Now they even leave some food in their bowls and don't meow at me all the time. It is a little bit more than Special Kitty, but better for them....

lovetosmellgood says "This should have been on the recall list! It killed my cats!" about Special Kitty cat food

Despite all the pet food recall lists, this Special Kitty dry food was NOT on the list. I lost two cats within one month and both were eating this type of food. The first one died so quickly I was unable to get him treated. He was acting fine and within 24 hours he was gone. The other one I took to the vet at the first signs of sickness and the vet confirmed that it was indeed kidney failure due to blockage. The vet did what he could but there wasn't much he could due to save him. He died within 24 hours as well. Even though the "problem" may have been fixed, I will never return to this brand of cat food. Much too risky. Buyers Beware!...

Special Kitty is a brand of cat food I have bought for a long time because of the price. There are several varities and my cats have tried every one. I have tried other inexpencive brands but end up wasting my money because they won't eat it. I am on a fixed income and rely on cost effective cat food....
