A new adopter of this 55-inch set, I have a few caveats for those who are thinking of plunking down the dough. First, if you are not planning on going all-out digital with your television broadcasts, then forget buying this unit. Any non-digital/non-high-definition source will look totally grainy and pixilated on the screen. This is not the fault of the TV or of the manufacturer, SONY. Basically this type of TV, like all HDTVs, is meant for digital television viewing. Watching normal TV on this set is hard on my eyes because the image is sometimes fuzzy and sometimes pixilated, and I can see some artifacts and ghosting.

However, if you can get digital cable or HD satellite (DirecTV, Dish, Voom) then you're good to go. Mind you -- these companies also provide an antenna for "off-air" viewing, which means to get local HD television broadcasts, you must use an antenna (pointing in the right direction of course) to receive the signal, but this is free. In fact, if you want to skip digital cable...
...

Ok all this HDTV stuff seems so strange to me. Now don't get me wrong the picture quality is outstanding and much better than any thing before. However I remember back in college hearing of this HDTV thing. I remember reading how it was going to change not only the way people watched TV but also the way it was going to be broadcast. All I could think was no way can they do this. Everyone would have to buy new TV's they couldnot afford and how could stations pay for all that equipment needed to change over to digital? Oh course this was when I was in college.....in 1991. It is so wild to see it actually happening. Sony of course leads the way in those quality TV's required for such viewing....

When I finally got WAF (wife acceptance factor) for a HDTV I started my research on what would bring us the best product for our money. Having a large living room, the first criteria was 50+ inches, the second criteria for me is cost (I'm notoriously cheap), the third criteria is picture quality (I want my cake and to eat it too). Considering the above three factors, my research quickly took me to the Sony SXRD type rear-projection televisions. For the size, you can't get a better value. The picture quality on this television rivals anything I've seen (and I looked at them all). My family loves it!

For comparison, I looked at DLP, LCD, and Plasma. I initially thought DLP was going to be the technology choice for me, but, this Sony has a better picture and price than any DLP I looked at. LCD & Plasma, great picture, additional benefits like a wider viewing angle, can mount on wall, etc, but, they cost considerably more for the size I desired.

For those considering a HDTV...
...

We purchased this television in the early fall of '07 to replace a smaller non-HD TV. We got it on sale and no interest for 18 months, so it's an even bigger bargain! It is easy to operate out of the box - not a lot of programming experience necessary (this coming from a computer programer). The buttons on the remote are self-explanatory and it offers many of the fuctions that anyone would want.

I will say that it takes several seconds to warm up and for the picture to appear initially, but once it's on, it is an absolute beautiful picture. Compared to our old TV... well, there is no comparison!!! You can view in full mode which many of the networks still broadcast in (black sections to the left and right of the picture), zoom mode, which I find to be too big for the screen, and wide zoom which fills the screen without zooming the picture too far off the screen.

This TV has the capability for input from several devices, and you can even label each input to let you know which...
...
