My husband and I got our Sony Handycam DCR SR42 the year after our son was born. We absolutely love this camera. It is fairly easy to use, although offloading the videos can sometimes take a little getting used to. The camera takes great quality videos and also captures sound really well. We use the videos that we take with our Handycam to make our own dvds. We have made dvds of our son for his grandparents and dvds of special holidays. I really like how the display comes out and swivels 180 degrees so that the person taking the video can video him-/herself and still see what he/she is videoing. The touchscreen is also a great part of this camera. So far the touchscreen has performed well and been easy to use. We have owned this camera three years and have had no problems. I also like how the display shows how many minutes of video time are remaining. Overall, this is a great camera. I would not recommend this camera for anyone who is technically challenged, but...
...

mrsmarun says "Great video, picture part just a bonus." about Sony - Handycam DCR-SR42 Camcorder

I almost absolutely love this. I will make sense of that through this review. As for the video part, this camcorder for the most part is awesome. It is very lightweight and small, so long periods of recording are no problem. Do have a light for when recording in dark. Love the ability to be recording then switch to picture mode with a flick of my finger then switch back. Downside, have to stop recording to catch the moment. The camera is only 4 megapixels, and no flash. I didn't really buy it for the picture ability, or expect it to replace my digital camera. So, as far as a video camera, with the ability to be able to catch that picture, while you have the handycam handy, it is just, sorry, but "HANDY". I love the videocamera and has many capabilities. The picture capability is a nice bonus feature. The Handycam has touchscreen, so easy to navigate through menu. The ability to pick up the sound is amazing. Easy to download to computer or burn straight to disc.

To sum up, buy and love...
...

CrystaBush says "How handy is my Sony Handcam? Let me count the ways....." about Sony - Handycam DCR-SR42 Camcorder

The Sony Handycam DCR-SR42 is awesome!

With that being said, now let me explain why.

What is it?
The Sony Handycam (Model DCR-SR42)is a hand-held digital video camera recorder. Instead of using a DVD disk or VCR tape (think old school video cameras), the Sony Handycam has a 30 GB built in hard drive that can hold up to 20 hours of video taping!

The LCD swivel screen also is a touch screen (options can be made on the camera itself, as well). The swivel screen is 2 1/2 inches big. The Sony Handycam can take video and digital still pictures.

Hooking the camera up to your computer is a breeze. All the accessories needed is in the kit with camera. The Sony Handycam simply sits on a charging base that plugs into the wall (the battery stays in the camera to charge while sitting on base). This base also has a one touch disk burning feature (which I admit I haven't tried yet. I did it the old-fashioned way).

Sometimes the scariest feature of getting new electronic gadgets is turning...
...

After carefully comparing current options on the market, I am very glad that I chose this particular product. It is easy to use, and convenient to transport wherever I go. The small size should not fool you--this is a quality item, lightweight, and very fun to use....

From afar, the right side of the HV20 has a familiar horizontal design akin to the Sony HC7, albeit with a fresh coat of silver paint. These camcorders have similar tape hatch designs. Only on the HV20, you'll find the microphone jack, AV/headphone jack, and component terminal hiding behind a rubberized port cover toward the lens end of the camcorder. Although we've blasted Canon in the past for equipping their camcorders with flimsy plastic port covers, the HV20 proudly sports a burly, flexible enclosure. Mounting both the mic and headphone jacks in one location is easy on the memory. But because Canon condensed the headphone and AV jacks into one, make sure you manually select the correct mode, or you'll be treated to a raucous surprise outlined in the Audio section....

charlesbing says "good overall" about Sony - Handycam DCR-SR42 Camcorder

For a consumer who needs 8mm/Hi8/digial 8 functionality, the TRV460 is an obvious choice. But for the consumer who is looking to venture into the MiniDV format (overall smaller camcorder/tape size), the GR-D33 might be a good stepping stone camcorder. The GR-D33 promises to have good video and low light performance, so the slight upgrade investment may be worth it. Making the transition has its pros and cons, the pros being, if you own an older Digital8 camcorder with a DV in/out port, you have the option of digitally copying your older tapes to the newer format. MiniDV tapes are more expensive, and this is something to consider when considering the transition. However, the cost has been lowered considerably over the years, and if last years trend is ever repeated (dropping the TRV line from 5 models to 2) Digital8 may soon be a thing of the past....

My husband and I recently purchased this camcorder, and we absolutely love it. It is so light and small that you can just take it anywhere. The picture quality is great and we really like all of the features the camcorder had to offer. This is our very first camcorder and it took us a while to pick the one we wanted, we shopped around and compared it to others and this was the one we liked that fit our budget....
