vivasuzi says "Much more interesting than I expected" about Slumdog Millionaire

I would never have taped Slumdog Millionaire off of HBO if it wasn't for so many people saying how great it was. It takes a few minutes to get into it, but once you do it is actually very interesting. Perhaps it's just so new and different that I'm drawn in with the details of this culture.

The movie begins with a man getting tortured. Apparently he was 1 quesiton away from winning a million dollars in the Indian version of "Who Wants to be a Millionaire". The reason he is being tortured is because they are trying to find out how he cheated. They assume he cheated because how else would a "slumdog" know all these questions.

Jamal goes about to tell them stories from growing up that explain why he knew all the answers. Each story though goes to show how horrible his life was growing up! I'm not going to tell you any of the stories because I think you should see for yourself. Seeing a young boy grow up in these conditions is insane and I'm sure it's realistic.

Bottom-Line: Despite the depressing setting Slumdog Millionaire is strangely uplifting and hopeful and in the end is a movie the whole family can and most likely will enjoy.

Directed by Danny Boyle Marc Foster (The Beach, 28 Days Later, Sunshine) Slumdog Millionaire (winner of 8 Oscars including Best Picture) takes place in the world's most populace city, Mumbai (Bombay), the capital of the Indian state of Maharashtra. Here young brothers Jamal and Salim Malik watch in horror as their mother, and scores of others, are set upon and killed for being Muslim, thus casting the brothers and another orphan, a girl named Latika adrift in the teaming slums of Mumbai.

Jamal and Latika form and instant attachment to one another that is to last throughout the film and form the basis for this love story.

My Viewpoint

Despite the brittle and often brutal edges of Slumdog Millionaire the movie is at its heart an enduring love story set against a backdrop of misery and despair. The movie was...
...

Slumdog Millionaire is amazing in every way you look at it.

This film, from acclaimed director Danny Boyle, follows the story of a man's journey to recover his lost true love, and find his purpose in life. The man's name is Jamal, and he was born and raised in India. When he gets on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?, he somehow answers every question so far correct. When they run out of time, he is suspected of cheating, and the police take him in for questioning until the next night's show of his continuing final question that would make him win if answered right. He reveals how he knew every answer, and within each explanation, is a story that is a major importance in his life. From the beginning of his life, abandoned by a massacre, Jamal befriends his brother and a girl named Latika, whom he falls in love with. When almost harmed deeply and loosing his contact with her, he makes it his mission to trek to find her.

The most memorable scene of the entire movie to me was probably when the...
...

TaraLee says "I waited for the DVD and found my self wishing I had a larger TV" about Slumdog Millionaire

When "Who wants to be a Millionaire" first aired, I was entranced. More exciting than the "Price is Right," easier than "Jeopardy!" with the life lines, but still tricky enough to be worth watching each time it aired (at its height of popularity it was on at least 3 if not more nights in primetime).

I am also a big fan of Bollywood movies. I love the huge dance scenes, and at some point when I move back to civilization (read the East Coast) I plan to take some Indian dance classes (if such a thing will still be offered by the time I leave the hinterland).

With these two interests, Millionaire and Bollywood you would think that I would be rushing to the theater to see Slumdog Millionaire as a first run film. However, even after rave reviews from friends and family I still did not make time to catch Slumdog while on the big screen.

After watching it on DVD I regret that choice.

The the impact of the depiction of the life of the poor, destitute orphans in India would have only...
...

We rented this movie from Blockbuster almost a week ago. It sat on our coffee table for days before it even dawned on me to give it a chance. I know, it is an acclaimed movie and all, but I must admit, I detest Indian movies.

Now before you go throwing the bigot tag around, hear me out.

A Little Background

A lifetime ago when I was in college, it was my senior year and I signed up for a "fluff course" in Communications. During a lecture, our professor let us in on a little secret. At that time, India produced more feature-length movies than any other nation. (They still do. ) So, to reinforce this point with us we were made to view Indian movies, non-stop for the next two weeks.

You want to talk "Waterboarding"? Trust me, if the detainees at Guantanamo were subjected to these two weeks, they would have been signing up for waterboarding as if it were a Royal Carribean Cruise. Grown men would have been seen crying for mommy. We're talking bad here, really, really bad!...
...

This was definately a movie for everybody. i don't recommend kids watch it though...there might be a bit of violence. but overall an amazing movie. the excitement never stops. its an all-in-one movie, comedy, action, drama, suspense, love....thats why i recommend it to everybody. it shows you all the different sides of india too, the rich and the poor, the ghettos, mafia, stealing, orfans. The movie really covers it all, and it's not a musical for those who hate musicals and think it;s a musical,....it has one song, at the end of the movie, which i suggest everybody to download, its called jai ho, by the pussycat dolls
...

WOW!!! Is the first thing that comes to mind. This movie deserved all of the awards it won and some. It really opened my eyes to the world we live in and made me appreciate what I have. Although it is a dramatization, I believe there is a lot of reality in this movie. Almost too much in some parts. Slum Dog Millionaire is very violent and disturbing in some parts, but it is worth sitting through those parts and watching between my fingers to experience this movie. I was not prepared for the emotions I would feel while watching it. I fell in love with the characters. I was told that the movie was subtitled, which it is, in parts. The majority of the movie is in English so I was able to watch and listen for the most part. One thing I appreciate about the awards shows is discovering gems like this. I would not have known about this independent film had I not watched the awards shows.
...

Slumdog Millionaire is not to be missed!!! This movie truely deserved best picture of the year and is one of the best ever. I have seen every single best picture (all 81 of them) and I rank this one as the 8th best ever. The movie uses the flashback method to tell the story of a "slumdog" who is a contestent on the Indian version of "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire." It follows the life of Patel from about age 8 to the present show. While he has the opportunity to win millions on the show, he doesn't care about the money and only goes on the show so he can find the love of his life, played by Frieda PInto. All of the acting is amazing in this movie, which is impressive since many of the actors playing the three main characters at earlier ages had no acting experience or training whatsoever. Instead of the usual garbage coming out of hollywood, be sure to see this movie! The producers in hollywood need to take note, these are the kind of movies we want to see!!!
...

Slumdog Millionaire has it all as a movie - intelligence, suspense, romance, good guy/bad guy, passion. A must see. Ingenius concept. Not your normal, everyday movie, but I think everyone could enjoy it (except for the really young, of course). Even my 12 year old daughter, who is extremely selective about what she will watch, was totally fascinated by this movie. Probably because of the "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?" aspect, but nontheless. It's certainly understandable why this movie won the Academy Award for Best Picture. And did you know that the production company had such little confidence in the movie that they weren't going to open in theatres, but take the movie straight to DVD release. But another production company who did have confidence in it picked up control of the movie, released it in theatres, and the rest is history. Got to be a few movie execs out there kicking themselves.
...
