TheBard says "A Mindless Movie with a lot of bullets" about Shoot 'Em Up

Bottom-Line: In the end-game Shoot ‘Em Up is entertaining enough if you like mindless violence, and little if no ploy-line.

British actor Clive Owen has a put together a reputation as an actor who shows up wherever the most violence is erupting. His tough, grizzled face lends itself to these roles, and he plays them rather well if you are into these type of movies. You know the violence laden, mindless, plot constrained movie with flying bullets, loud explosions, and wanton sex. Such a movie is Shoot ‘Em Up (2007), written and directed by Michael Davis.

My Viewpoint

Shoot ‘Em Up, which also stars Paul Giamatti, and Monica Bellucci is a loud affair with little to recommend it other than to watch Owen' character Smith dive, shoot, run, shoot, and slide shoot, his way through most of the film. The beautiful Ms. Bellucci, who portrays Donna Quintano, a lactating prostitute, is Smith's partner is this movie without a creditable plot that starts with a pregnant woman...
...

So, my boyfriend and I decided this action-packed film would be a nice break-away from the comedic movies we usually rent. Except not. I laughed harder at this movie than I have laughed at any movie in a while...and not in a good way. Not one single part of this movie was believable..or even really entertaining. After about an hour, we shut it off and watched something with more substance, A Shot at Love with Tila Tequila.
...

Shoot 'em Up is a movie that my husband has been looking forward to seeing. I think the title will appeal to most men since it hints of a lot of action and adventure. This is a 2007 movie that was both written and directed by Michael Davis. It stars Clive Owen as "Smith" and Paul Giamatti as "Hertz".

The Plot

Just from the title you can percieve that this movie has a lot of action involving shoothing. It is a bout an innocent man, Smith, who witnesses a pregnant women being pursused by someone trying to kill her. Smith decide to try to help and in the process ends up delivering a baby. The mother ends up being shot and dies. Smith is left with a newborn baby that someone wants very badly. The movie revolves around the prusuit of Smith by Hertz, who is the leader of the gang trying to run down Smith to get the baby. But why does Hertz want a newborn baby? You'll have to watch the movie to find out!

My Thoughts on Shoot 'em Up

This was just an average action and adventure film......

This movie was certainly full of action and had a body count of about 200+ but it really didn't have much of a plot. When the movie started you couldn't figure out which were the good or bad guys. As it moved on, you continued to be confused. I love action films and especially don't mind a little romance intermingled with it, but his fell short. You had to wonder why the main character never got hit by a bullet even when there were 50 guys shooting at him simultaneously. It was beyond ridiculous which made it somewhat of a comedy. I was glad that I was busy sewing the entire time the movie was on. Otherwise, I would have been bored. My favorite part was when the main character parachuted out of a jet and at least 50 guys jumped out after him. They all were shooting in the air and everyone managed to get killed except for the main character. The shot of the scenery around him as he walked away cracked me up! There were bodies everywhere but yet he was fine. It was......

I knew this film was going to be bad, but with Clive Owen and Paul Giamatti, I thought it would be watchable. It's not. It could have been. They could have made it believable and somewhat realistic. What we get instead is a video game devoid of anything believable whatsoever. If the writers that are on strike are responsible for this tripe, I say fire them all and start over. My dog could have written a better film. It's made for fourteen year old boys, period. If you're not one, skip this trash.
...

This movie was so funny! It was so outrageous and unbelievable that it made it hilarious and fun to watch. So many movies these days are horror or serious, it was nice to just watch a movie that was fun! Clive Owen ain't bad on the eyes either!!!! Defiantly recommend to others, but, make sure your kids don't watch. There is some nudity. It's action from the very beginning and it doesn't stop until the credits run. I loved it!...

gamera23 says "delivers the fun" about Shoot 'Em Up

The title says it all: Shoot 'Em Up has a lot of extreme gunplay, and writer/director Michael Davis is irreverent and playful enough to show off his intentions right in the title.

The term "shoot 'em up" has been applied to a genre of video games as early as Space Invaders, but decades before that low budget westerns carried the label. A shoot 'em up provides lots of gunpowder-fueled action with just enough character and plot to hold the movie together.

Davis - whose previous film is a monster movie entitled Monster Man - obviously sees no need for subterfuge in creating entertainment. Shoot 'Em Up is a loving tribute to – and good natured light parody of – the kind of action movie that John Woo is famous for: The Killer or Hard Boiled, for example. These films feature heroes as skillful in the art of shooting firearms as kung fu stars are at using punches and kicks, perfecting their craft to the point that they are considered "gun fu" masters.
Shoot 'Em Up has a dashing hero, played...
...

Clive Owen handled the action scenes and acting very well and the plot was alright. Casting, costumes and sets were pretty good too. There was a lot of showy stuff done for effect though. From the fetishes to the one liners it was just too much. It was over the top and left me flat. The pace of the action was, perhaps, to quick for the timing on the one liners to work. Pause here, insert one liner.. maybe more the fault of direction or editing than other factors, but it might have been written in. I couldn't become invested and that made me less tolerant of some of the scenes with the baby and others with the carrots. I wasn't trying to see my watch in the dim light of the theater, but I like action films and this one I could easily have missed....

Mr----X says "This movie should of been called "100 Ways to Gunfight"." about Shoot 'Em Up

Shoot 'Em Up has been on my list of "Have-to-See" movies for a while. I'm a big fan of Clive Owen and a huge fan of Paul Giamatti. When I heard that Owen was going to be in a pure action movie and that Giamatti played the bad guy, I nearly fainted. I had my doubts of course but, they were quelled during the opening scene.

Plot: Mr. Smith (Clive Owen) rescues a laboring pregnant women and delivers her baby in the midst of a shootout. When the mother is fatally shot, Smith must take on the duty of protecting the baby and finding out why the hitmen wanted the mother and child dead.

Shoot 'Em Up is a nonstop action thriller that has a very noir feel during the non gunfight scenes. The acting and characters are your typical noir type but they have a sense of humor about them. Clive Owen's character, Mr. Smith, is an expert marksman who is infuriated by the smalls things in life. For example, in one scene, a man driving ahead of him is changing lanes without using his blinker. Smith becomes enraged......
