I had a bad experiance where they took 14 minutes to process a transaction. I did not have a lot of shares, so the money factor was not a big deal. (It went up $3 a share in that time period) It was the customer service that bothered me. I am going to migrate my account when I find a company that will pay for the transfer.
Just thought I should share that. Thanks.
...

madlila says "Best small purchase brokerage, now coupled with ING" about Sharebuilder

I opened my Sharebuilder account about 5 years ago. One of the best financial decisions I've ever made! Now that they are partnered with Ing it's even better. Sharebuilder is best for investors who just want to build up a basic retirement portfolio. Think long term, buy and hold. Not that good a choice if you will be doing a lot of transactions every month a la day trader.

I use the automatic option and try to stash some money each paycheck and then once a month purchase small amounts of a number of stocks. At first I was using the standard $4 per trade, but recently switched to the $ 12 plan which is cheaper for multiple purchases.

There are research links and, overall, lots of good investing information. I never feel like they are pushing a particular stock or fund. Just good information.
...

Alxsteele says "Good options, reasonable rates." about Sharebuilder

I have been investing with Sharebuilder for over six years now. I have found their fees to be reasonable, compared to other online brokers that I have had experience with. Recently, Scottrade tried to solicit me away from Sharebuilder. I asked Sharebuilder whether they would match the investment rates of this competing broker. They were not willing to do that, but they did offer me me three months of the advantage rate plan (for free). You can invest in many mutual funds, most US stocks, some foreign options, and many initial public offerings. Rates run $4 per pre-planned investment, and have recently come down to $9.99 (from $14) for real-time investments. If you are looking for a way to invest in individual stocks, this is a reliable company with good service. Recently, they were acquired by ING Banking, which now allows me to access my account from the ING site. I can recommend this site to any, regardless of your investment philosophy or experience.
...

dbm82 says "Sharebuilder IT Outages=Money Down The Drain" about Sharebuilder

I wanted to love Sharebuilder but unfortunately this service ended up costing both me, my boyfriend, and who knows how many investors hundreds of dollars because the site apparently could not handle large volumes of activity that naturally occur during rallies and other times of high trading.

During two periods of major stock market activity, a few months ago, the site became completely inaccessible to both of us. We would try to log on over and over again to no luck. Online message boards filled with complaints as we watched the value of our investments fall and fall with no ability to sell. This was my first time investing outside of my retirement account and terrifying to watch.

Had this happened just once, this may have been forgivable but it had happened months earlier and happened AGAIN just a few days later. (Google "Sharebuilder outage" for more details.) Phone lines had impossibly long waits. In the end customer service offered virtually nothing in return.

Bryan-Carey says "Sharebuilder.com Will Help You Reach Your Financial Goals" about Sharebuilder

Investment is important to a solid financial strategy, yet many people forgo investing due to lack of knowledge. If you would like to get started on building a portfolio but would like some assistance, there is one web site that can help you get going for relatively low cost. The site is Sharebuilder.com an on- line financial brokerage service.

Brokerage Commentary:

Sharebuilder.com offers investment accounts, online trading in real time, investment research, and most all of the other tools normally associated with an online brokerage company. In addition, it also offers credit reports, insurance, loans, and more. Recently, Sharebuilder.com combined forces with ING Bank, which helped to further expand its financial service offerings.

Sharebuilder.com is a good on- line investment company that can help anyone start an investment/savings program and many credit Sharebuilder.com for helping them to establish an investment account for the first time. I am not a beginner to the world...
...

zeusal1 says "Great way to invest" about Sharebuilder

I bagan using Sharebuilder in January 2009. I have a 401K account through work that has been doing terrible over the last year like everyone else's is doing. My husband talked me into getting into the market with Sharebuilder on a small sacle now that the market is as close to zero as you can get. We started small with $100 a month and are now at $200 per month. I received a bonus at work and put it into the account and we decided to not try and guess individual stocks that would go up, so we picked some ETF's (Exchange Traded Fund). We feel like we almost know what we are doing, as the market has started to move in the right direction for us, and if it does this for another month or two, I can see us getting back everything that we lost in our 401K's this year, and getting ahead by next year. The forced savings of automatic investing makes it feel like we never received the money to start, and it doesn't hurt as much. We have hardly had to change how we live to allow for...
...

JDories says "Highly Recommend for Beginning Investors!" about Sharebuilder

I highly recommend Sharebuilder for beginning investors. The automatic investment plan works amazingly for me, but it may not be right for more aggressive or advanced investors. Basically, it lets you invest money every Tuesday for a real cheap price - if you are willing to buy on that schedule then it is the best bang for your buck. I am in it for the long term, so waiting for Tuesdays to invest is easy for me.

Also, it is very easy to use, reliable, great customer service, and addictive to check every hour. I have heard a lot of more advanced investor's complain - but for me, it is just right!

Take advantage of their 50 dollar beginning bonus through www.mypoints.com or some banks.
...

bbuscher says "They make it easy to save and start investing." about Sharebuilder

Sharebuilder (now a part of ING Direct), is a great service for people like me. I am a young professional with little experience with, or for that matter, interest in investing. That said, I do want to begin to take control of my finances and make smart, albeit rather small invests with the option to increase investments later. For this, Sharebuilder is the perfect choice. I have it set up so that my checking account sends a small payment each week to my Sharebuilder account (note: if you choose this, make sure you set it up as an "ACH" on the Sharebuilder side, and not a transfer/wire on your bank side, especially if you bank with Chase as I know from experience, they will charge a service fee each time). Then, when I feel as if I have enough cash to make purchase a stock, I research stocks, ask around to friends and colleagues and then make a purchase based on my findings. In this way, I am actively learning about the process and I feel as I have a role in what I'm doing with my money....
...

Customeright says "Sharebuilder In Theory and Practice: Level the Playing Field" about Sharebuilder

The main concept with ShareBuilder that makes it unique is that it is a discount broker that allows you to purchase partial shares. While their commissions are low (from $9.95 to $1 per trade); being able to buy partial shares is the true innovation they've given to the amateur trader. A partial shareholder is entitled to the same risks/rewards as a full shareholder, including dividends. Of course low commissions are important, and this is ShareBuilder's main advertising point; but keep in mind that no matter what the commission is, you typically have to be able to afford a whole share in order to buy something.

Buy With the Big Boys

Buying whole shares is probably not a deterrent if you want to buy a cheap stock, but what about a stock that's more expensive? With ShareBuilder you can actually buy $2 worth of Berkshire Hathaway B shares (typically trading over $3,000 per share ). That's 0.06% ownership of one share that you can own. No traditional broker would allow that. (Note: Even ShareBuilder...
...

First came my ING Direct saving account and ultimately a promotional offer whereby I would get $25 for branching out into a Sharebuilder venture. Such a deal was enough to seduce me and I've never looked back since.

My poison (I mean, stock) of choice is Whirlpool and every month $100 is automatically transferred from my checking account at Charter One to Sharebuilder to buy WHR shares. (There is a nominal charge per trade, I think it may be four or five dollars). So far, everything has worked perfectly (wait a minute, I have to knock on wood!) and even the latest economic adversities have not deterred me from following this path. The way I see it, no matter what happens in the housing industry, as long as people have to eat or do laundry, Whirlpool (who also own Maytag) probably aren't going out of business.

Since I am in a buying mode, the downtown in share prices really helped me as now my $100 a month is buying me more shares than it used to. I have faith that eventually those...
...
