OldHippie says "All Gave Some - Some Gave All" about Saving Private Ryan

What better movie to review on this day than Saving Private Ryan. For this day, June 6, 2009 is the 65th anniversary of D-Day. According to a Fox News story back on May 24, 2008, WW II Veterans are dying at the rate of 1,000 per day. To quote a line, "But judging by the passing of the World War I veterans, we're predicting they will all be gone by 2020." If you ever meet a WW II Vet, you should humbly say "Thank You!" and shake his or her hand. After all...you're not speaking, reading or writing normally in German or Japanese are you?

In my opinion, Tom Hanks (Capt. John H. Miller) gives one of his best performances. And Steven Spielberg directs one of his best also. Just the landing scene (Omaha Beach) alone took much longer than anyone anticipated. Steven Spielberg said he had it all in his head, but not much scripted. Yes, it's quite explicit...arms being blown off, soldiers burned, screams of "Mother" from those dying - you get the idea. Squeamish or not, I think...
...

I loved Saving Private Ryan. I served in the military for only a short time, in the Air Force, but it does my heart good to see the continued sacrifice that so many men and women give to this country as they put their own lives on hold and protect us from the evil that lurks to hurt us. May GOD be with us all...and May God Bless America!!!!
...

Saving Private Ryan questions the validity of command and obeyance, as well as sacrifice. Unfortunately, the plot is prolonged and unmotivated details are irritating. However, the first war scene inflenences many disciples, such as Feng Xiaogang's Assembly, albeit Feng's work investigates deeper meaning than Saving Private Ryan.
The storyline and acting make "Saving Private Ryan" a great movie, but the constant foul language detracts it to the point I won't watch it again or recommend it to anyone....

There's a graveyard in northern France where all the dead boys from D-Day are buried. The white crosses reach from one horizon to the other. I remember looking it over and thinking it was a forest of graves. But the rows were like this, dizzying, diagonal, perfectly straight, so after all it wasn't a forest but an orchard of graves. Nothing to do with nature, unless you count human nature. - Barbara Kingsolver

A little over a decade ago - in July of 1998, to be exact - moviegoers all over the United States and other countries sat in darkened theaters in quiet, almost solemn expectation and watched as the Dreamworks SKG and Paramount logos slowly dissolved to a shot of a backlit American flag and heard the mournful strains of a trumpet playing the first notes of composer John Williams' main title music for Steven Spielberg's first true war movie, Saving Private Ryan.

At first, all the audience saw was the flag fluttering in a stiff breeze, then the camera panned down to what looked like...
...

Every American should see this film, simply to understand what so many brave young men faced during that time of war, and to realize how heroic those men were. The film itself tells a terrific story against the historic backdrop of a critical point in WW II. By far the greatest war movie in recent times. ...
