nassihaashkelon says "For the novice traveler" about San Juan, Puerto Rico

Old San Juan, as shown in the photo is a great place to visit. But San Juan itself has only enough to offer for a day trip. Puerto Rico in general is great for the novice traveler who has never been outside of their home town. Some of the great natural sites and activities are found in the "local" towns and areas of Puerto Rico, this prevents a problem for most travelers who are "scared" into remaining in the San Juan area. My suggestion for the experienced traveler heading here is to rent a car, be concious and safe but don't be scared away from exploring the island. The island is VERY small in comparison and you can actually drive the entire island in one day. Go up to the mountains, see the waterfalls and the beaches in the south. EXPLORE!!!...

My husband and I went on a cruise ship leaving out of San Juan, Puerto Rico. We had decided to spend two nights before our cruise in San Juan and two nights on the other side of the island after returning from our cruise. Our experiences on both sides of the island were less than impressive.

Mistake #1: I booked everything online and did not use a professional travel agent. Had I used a travel agent, we might not have spent our first two nights in San Juan in a so-so hotel in the middle of a residential area. We didn't rent a car so we had to take a long bus ride to get downtown. I thought I was being frugal by doing that but we were the only tourists on the bus and really stood out. I did not feel threatened but I also didn't feel very safe until we were downtown or safely tucked away back in our hotel room.

Lesson learned: Pay more money for a tourist hotel in the popular areas and be sure to check online reviews (i.e. Viewpoints) about the hotel. Also, when in doubt...
...

San Juan was a nice little get away. I went down with a few friends in January. The weather was nice, about an average of 80F everyday. The people were very friendly. Most of them spoke english but the ones who only spoke spanish were stil so nice and tried their best to help you. If you needed to cross the road, the second you step up to the sidewalk the cars would just stop!!! Not like the impatient roadragers from home! Although most of the places we went to looked impoverish like it was still nice when you got to think of the historical parts. Old San Juan was beautiful! Just so amazing. Their was actually a little cathedral type place that was built right on the side of a cliff. So beautiful. We did drive out to The Yunque Rainforest. You park your car and walk through it, but the sights were so great that it was well worth the hike. Waterfalls, and the tower were just fantastic. The only down side to San Juan was that it wasn't like the typical island. It had a lot of places......

My husband and I were recently married and went to San Juan, Puerto Rico for our honeymoon. We were drawn to Puerto Rico since it was a Carribean island and neither of us had been out of the country before, but also since it is a U.S. territory, you don't need a passport.

San Juan is beautiful. Lots of beautiful white beaches and geourgous deep blue water. My husband had never been in the ocen before, so we spent the first two days glued to our lounge chairs at the resort and drinking pina coladas and strawberry daquiries.

There is lots to do on the island. A few definite musts are touring the rainforest. We had a wonderful tour guide who told us about every hot spot in Puerto Rico along the way to the forest. Once arriving to the forest, we went up the mountains on a scenic bus tour and ended with a short hike. The scenery is well worth it.

Another must is night kyaking. The bus of the kyaking company will pick you up at your hotel and give you a highlighted tour of Puerto Rico along the...
...
