Bottom-Line: For those willing to listen, Rendition has a powerful message to impart.

"Extraordinary Rendition"; that odious practice reportedly started under the Clinton Administration, but the Bush Administration took it to new lows after 9/11 is the subject of Rendition (2007). In case you have never heard of the affront to human rights, Extraordinary Rendition is the practice of kidnapping a person and shipping them off-usually by CIA chartered jet-to a place where the torture has been elevated to a high art form, all for the stated purpose of saving lives.

The Story

Helmed by actor turned director Gavin Hood (Tsotsi) Rendition chronicles the abduction of one Anwar El-Ibrahimi (Omar Metwally - Munich), a naturalized American citizen born in Egypt. Anwar, a chemical engineer, is on his way back to Chicago where he lives with his American-born wife Isabella (Witherspoon - Cruel Intentions), son Jeremy (Aramis Knight), and mother Nuru (Rosie Malek-Yonan -...
...

This movie left me thinking. How many people has this really happened to? I hope the government never suspects me or any one I know of helping terrorists! With the new law that was passed after 9/11 this stuff really happens! FREAKY!...

nanawely says "Every American Citizen NEEDS to see this." about Rendition

With two family members in Iraq, I'm actively tracking all I can regarding this war and months back investigated our countries "extraordinary rendition" program involving our CIA and the "black holes" we've developed. I don't believe half our citizens are even aware of the rendition policy let alone our newly Bush founded extraordinary rendition. And tho this is just a movie, perhaps it could make people aware of what our government has become.

Watch it if you dare.
...

McArt says "Propaganda film, very entertaining" about Rendition

This movie is a very today movie--terrorists against the bad guy, the USA. I consider this to be a propaganda movie giving a spin to things like water-boarding and other heart-felt tortures. The "terrorist" they were trying to get information from never succumbed to the water-boarding; which, in real life, breaking under water-boarding is very quick.

The underlying current was about character. The character of the foreign torture chief was that of a cold, calculating thug who didn't mind any torture they used. The character of the USA counter-part was that of a intelligent, compassionate, down-to-business professional.

The movie ended with the "terrorist" being released and returned "home" to the USA. I think he was a genuine terrorist who beat the system and got away with murder.

...

LibbyMcMillan says "Meaningful and disturbing" about Rendition

I chose Thanksgiving Day to go see Rendition. Perhaps not the best way to follow up a happy meal, but I certainly left the theater thankful for several things, and pondering others.

Rendition tells a cautionary tale of post-9/11 suspicion and ramifications of political actions and decisions. The movie follows a young pregnant wife, played by Reese Witherspoon, whose husband doesn't make his flight home. We follow Witherspoon as she tries to untangle the wheres and whys of her husband's disappearance.

With all the presidential candidates debating American torture techniques and how to handle possible terrorists, you've likely heard of water-boarding. Rendition addresses the subject, and you may not fall so easily on the side you think you will after seeing this film.

Witherspoon's character is not pushy enough in a desperate situation - a minor script flaw, in my opinion - but she and the supporting characters do a good job, particularly Meryl Streep as an icy politico. ...
...
