bg20087 says "My dog devours this food....he loves it so much!" about Purina Pro Plan Shredded Blend Adult Dog Food

I switched over to the shredded ProPlan a little while ago, from other ProPlan varieties. My dog had eaten all of the other flavors (chicken and rice, salmon and rice, etc). But from the moment I poured his first bowl of the Shredded ProPlan, I notices a change in the amount of food my dog would eat. Instantly, he devoured it! Before switching to this dog food, I would always have food available to my dog for him to eat whenever he wanted. He would just eat when he was hungry, or so I thought. Then, when I switched to the Shredded ProPlan I had to monitor how much he ate. Now I wonder if he only ate the other food when he was completely famished and just didn't like it.

He likes to eat the shredded chicken bits out of the mix because he loves them so much....I didn't know how much my dog could until I switched to this product. As soon as I pour it, he goes right for the shredded chicken bits. I think he liked those bits more than the treats I give him. All in all,...
...

My two dogs love Purina Pro Plan. They never walk away from their bowls until all their food is gone. The vet recommended this brand to us, as being better for them than Science Diet, which we were previously using. I love that the first ingredient is chicken and not a chicken biproduct. I feel good about feeding this food to my dogs.
...

I decided after many not so good reviews from a number of people at the pet rescue I volunteer for and my vet that Hills Science Diet isn't a quality food for my dogs I made the desicion to swith to Purina. I've heard great things about Purina so I figured I would give it a try. While at the pet store I was looking at the Pro Plan with real Shredded Chicken in it. I thought it would be nice since I currently give my dogs a dry and wet food mix and I would like to ween them off of wet food. Anyways, after only two meals of mixing the Pro Plan with real Shredded Chicken with the food they are currently on, my Italian Greyhound started vomitting extremely mucusy yellow bile with chunks of chicken in it. After only one meal my standard sized Greyhound began to deficate more than normal, have terrible gas, and burping an extreme amount. DON'T FEED YOUR DOG THIS FOOD! It just isn't worth it.
...

We rescued our dog 10 1/2 years ago. We had trouble finding a food that his stomach could agree with. After a month of hamburger and rice, we introduced Pro Plan Beef and Rice dry food and it agreed with our dog. We have used it for over 10 years. The new Shredded version has caused some digestion problems and our dog doesn't like the yellow soft clumps. He leaves them behind and refuses to eat them. This is a dog that would eat just about anything. Sorry Purina and Pro Plan you lost a long time customer and I'm stuck with about 30 lbs. of dog food that my dog won't eat. I'll have to see if the local shelter will take it since we don't have the original package. We dumped it in our seal tight bin because we thought we were buy the same product that we had bought for the last 10 years.
...

Purina Pro Plan Shredded Blend Adult Dog Food was the worst food for my little Chihuahua Minnieme. I thought Minnie me would love this well the smell was horrid and it looked just as nasty but i though she might like it anyway plus i was eating it so the smell may not bother her. As soon as i put it in a bowl and called her to have a treat she came running but took a smell and backed off. I let it sit hoping she would try this a bit later she went back and ate some. She didn't finish it and i ended up throwing it out..... I will not buy this for her again she is the BOSS in my home and i believe she told me no more LIL.
...

Purina Pro Plan Shredded Blends:

I also fed Pro Plan Chicken and Rice for years. When I couldn't buy it last December, I bought the bags of Pro Plan Shredded Chicken, and within 3 weeks my Cavaliers had stools that looked like cow piles, One bitch was nursing puppies, after testing for numerous germs, a local rottweiler breeder came into the vet with the same problem and using the same food. Vet had us put the dogs on canned EN and told us to change food. All but the bitch that was nursing pups turned around immediately. The mother was getting worse and beginning to look like a skeleton. Blood was drawn and sent to Cornell and results came back with Pancreatic Deficiency. She was put on Pancreatic Enzymes and with in three day's her stools cleared up. It appears that the Pancreas is damaged, of course Purina is still denying that their is a problem. We spent over $800.00 in vet bills trying to clear up all the problems which included excessive dandruff (mange) hair falling out by the handfuls,...
...

We have taken her to 2 diff Vets (only because we moved) and they both said the same thing, that she looks great and healthy. We totally have no complains and fully recommend this food.
...

I have fed my GoldenDoodle nothing but Purina Pro Plan for 3 years but this new shredded formula is for the birds....not the dogs. I am convinced they have just added 30-40% bulk to the food to save them money. The bulk is causing diariaha and a significant increase in stool volume. Good Buy Purina...it was a great ride until you messed it up....

Pro Plan Shredded-My dog is so sick since he has been on this food that my husband had to rush him to the ER tonight....SEVERE vomitting, diarreah, uncontrolled urinating, shivering, hives.......strated will hives, digging at skin, swelling of face and toes...thought it was a reaction to my daughters perfume since it always seemed worse in the morning and they share a bed together,.......until we banned that and the rest of the symptoms started.

He just called to say he is in the back for testing. WIll be an hour before they know anything. We immediately took him off and went back to the store and complained. They said they have had numerous complaints. Called Purina, they said the same thing and offered to send a coupon for a new bag...how generous considering I never want to feed him ProPlan again. Been feeding the same strict diet for 4 1/2 years and all of a sudden they feel the need to change the formula. NOw I have to find a new dog food that isn't going to cause diarreah...
...

My wife and I have been giving our two dogs (14 months and 2.5 years) ProPlan ever since they were off puppy chow. They have loved it the entire time. In late December we bought our first bag of the "Shredded Blend". We noticed that both have become very gassy and have been belching alot after they eat. It also seemed that they had lost some weight (which we didn't want because they were both already lean). We took them for their annual checkup yesterday and found that our older dog had dropped down to 71lbs. Last time she was weighed at Haloween she was 88lbs! Our other dog dropped from 38 to 32lbs (not nearly as much but still a bit of a concern). Their activity level has dropped (especially our older one) but we have been trying to increase their diet to regain their original weights. I am so disappointed with Purina, my wife has tried to contact them, but has not heard back. We have changed their food, and will not buy ProPlan ever again.
...

Gave this to my dogs and have been taking them to the vet for days now! Diarrhea, vomit, lethargy... the first bag was okay, but then they suddenly had problems on the second bag. Both dogs have been whimpering and defecating a watery awful mess for days! This has cost me a fortune at the vet for IV fluids and antibiotics as it seems to be a non-stop train wreck in my house! I will never use Purina products again....

I have two Jack Russells who are 9 yrs old and ProPlan is the only food they have ever eaten. They have never had skin or coat issues until now. Of course the dogs love it and gobble it up. They have eaten multiple bags of this, all bought at different times and different store locations. They started having these issues within about 1 to 2 weeks of eating the new food.

This was a great concept from Purina but they failed with the nutrition end of the deal!

I am now in the process of finding them a new dog food. I will contact ProPlan to bring back the old formula or I will never buy their food again.

Thank you for giving us a place to connect....it's great to know that I am not alone with this problem.

Pnut
...

We switched our dogs over from Authority Chicken (pet smart brand) to Purina Pro plan shredded chicken. The reason was quite simple, Pet Smart is 70 miles away, while a new Petco store is only 5 or 6. These two dog foods are roughly comparable in price and ingredients, with Authority having a slight edge.

The dogs like the taste and have had no bad reactions to it. There is a lot of marketing put into promoting ultra premium dog foods, just as much as promoting low quality dog food. For low quality dog foods it is all about taste, for ultra premium it is all about ingredient. The truth is almost all dogs can live happy healthy lives with mid range to premium dog foods like Iams, Pro plan, Purina one, Nutro and Authority. There is nothing wrong with grains in dog food unless your dog is allergic to them and they are balanced out with meat protein sources. There is nothing wrong with Animal by-product meal. It is just as much a protein source and Chicken meal or Lamb meal. ...
...
