LibrarianJess says "Public Enemies is far too long for such a short plot." about Public Enemies

The most compelling reason to see this movie is the hot guys, namely Johnny Depp and Christian Bale. I was unsure whether Johnny Depp could pull off playing John Dillinger as he was killed at 31 and Depp is currently 46. However, Depp has such good bone structure and skin that with a little Hollywood makeup he really look 31, and makes Christian Bale look old in comparison when in reality Bale is much younger.

Once you look past the hot guys, there's not a whole lot to this film, largely because it is too long and drawn out. Editing out an hour of this film would have made a nice, concise, and fast paced movie. It was close to 2 1/2 long and everyone in the theather was getting bored.

Public Enemies tells the story of John Dillinger and his gang's bank robbing sprees during the Great Depression. His story is mirrored by that of J. Edgar Hoover's efforts to launch a nationwide crime force that would become the FBI. The fledgling organizations first priority is to apprehend...
...

ka2kas22 says "We're having too good a time today." about Public Enemies

I'm a huge fan of Johnny Depp. So naturally a few months back when I saw trailers for Public Enemies I knew I was going regardless of how awesome the trailers were...might I say the trailers were good.

Getting into the first movie was a little difficult for me. There were short scenes jumping around from place to place from person to person. The action was good and Johnny Depp as cute as ever. But two hours! It looked like the same bank everytime just different people. And before you could ever identify with a character that wasn't Dillinger, Agent Pervis or Dillinger's girlfriend Billie before they died.

I appreciate the movie for its timing. I mean how perfect. A story about robbing banks in the depression and how much it relates to the times today. It makes a statement and I guess honors a good man who just saw what was wrong with the world and who controls it. Just as a movie goes it was only ok. I really wanted this to be absolutely outstanding but unfortunately there was nothing...
...

TheBard says "Blood, bullets, outlaws and the birth of the F.B.I." about Public Enemies

Bottom-Line: Intellect is in short supply throughout Public Enemies, but it is good entertainment nonetheless.

Directed and produced by Michael Mann Public Enemies chronicles the newly minted Federal Bureau of Investigation's (F.B.I.) battle to rein in the outlaws of the Great Depression period. Special Agent Melvin Purvis (Christian Bale), is sent to head up the F.B.I.'s Chicago field office by then head of the agency, J. Edgar Hoover (Billy Crudup).

Once ensconced in Chicago Purvis leads the manhunt for Indiana born John Dillinger (Johnny Depp ). Dillinger has already served eight years for armed robbery, been captured once, but then escapes, and is responsible for some two dozen robberies and at least 6 police slayings in three states.

My Viewpoint

As the nexus of this tale of criminals, G-Men, bank robberies, and bullets, Jonny Depp as John Dillinger comes close to embodying the man who is part Robin Hood, part cold blooded killer, and quintessentially American. As it...
...

GreatMartin says "ALL ACTORS EXCELLENT--MOVIE ISN'T" about Public Enemies

"Public Enemies" proves two things: the first being that, no surprise, Johnny Depp is a grade A actor and, second, he might bring back hats for men!

I might wind up being in the minority but I found this to be a long, boring film with the most annoying, many times very confusing and certainlyunnecessary, camera shots. The camera is used for every angle from looking up from the floor to looking down from the sky or ceiling. There are shots of car vents, all parts of rifles, dark chases through woods and various criminals and FBI agents to the point that you don't know which is which.

One of the biggest problems I had was, knowing how John Dillinger died, so many scenes that might lead to his capture or death have no meaning or suspense. Also, based on a real person told in reel life it is hard to know what is true and what is false, in particular two scenes where it is hard to believe no one recognized this very well know man whose face is on Wanted Posters all over the country.
...
