Although I am budget-conscious, I will pay for quality when it's necessary. I've tried other OTC for acid reflux and they just don't do the trick. Prilosec OTC takes care of my symptoms. If I miss a day, I know it! Although the packaging says something like don't take for more than 14 days, I've been taking it for years. My doctor says this is fine. I used to get such horrible heart burn. I'm glad that we have products like this available today!
...

jedipple says "Works as good as expensive prescription medicine." about Prilosec OTC

I have used Prilosec OTC for about a year now and I am very happy with the medicine. I was using a prescription drug and it cost me over $300.00 to get the medicine, which I could not afford. I worked with the drugist and he said to try Prilosec OTC for two weeks and see if that would help me. It works very well for heartburn and I have a hialtie hernia and really need a very effective medicine. I watch for when the Prilosec OTC is on sale and when I have a coupon from the newspaper, before I purchase my months supply. I also take my pill in the evening as this is when you could have the most problem. I tried the Zantac OTC, but that didn't work for me. The Prilosec OTC has a delayed realease action to it that helps me for many hours. I think this is great to have an over the counter medicine that works as good as a prescription, especially when the drug companies take so long to come out with a generic pill.
...

cassiya2 says "Sweet relief!" about Prilosec OTC

When my doctor first told me to try Prilosec OTC to relieve my heartburn, I balked at the price. The cheapskate in me wanted to stick with the sometimes-it-work, sometimes-it-doesn't Mylanta. But after months of sudden, painful heartburn I decided to give it a go.

I must say, Prilosec is well worth the money! Instead of belching onions for hours after I eat a salad (I love them and am not willing to give up eating them) I'm sitting pretty and pain-free! Hallelujah! The only downside is that it is a preventative medicine rather than for relief of immediate problems, so you have to plan on taking it ahead of time.

It may be pricier than things like Mylanta and Pepto Bismal, but Prilosec OTC is certainly worth the cost!
...

Bryan-Carey says "Prilosec OTC Provides Long Term Stomach Acid Relief" about Prilosec OTC

Excess stomach acid can cause great discomfort. Heartburn is one common problem associated with out of control stomach acid, but GERD/acid reflux is even worse because it can lead to lesions in the throat and other health issues. To stop heartburn and associated problems, I sometimes reach for Prilosec OTC, a remedy for stomach pain.

Drug Commentary:

Prilosec OTC helps relieve stomach acid problems by blocking the production of stomach acid. This makes it a little different from other antacids, which usually work to neutralize the stomach acid already present. Prilosec OTC accomplishes its mission through the active ingredient Omeprazole Magnesium. This ingredient is released on a delayed basis, and this means that Prilosec OTC can help relieve problems associated with stomach acid for a full day.

I have the occasional bout with excess stomach acid, usually the result of overeating or consuming foods and beverages that are either spicy or high in acid. I have an assortment of antacid...
...

TinaBrewer says "Prilosec OTC" about Prilosec OTC

I have used many products over the years and Prilosec is the best. I used it when it was a prescription and loved it. Then my insurance wouldn't cover it, and I had to go to a cheaper product that left me so gassy. It was very embaressing. I had to use that for a few years before my insurance decided that I could have Prilosec again. By then it was over the counter. So at first they balked because they don't like to pay for over the counter medicines, then decided it was cheaper to pay for the Prilosec than to pay for the presciption medicine.

Anyway though when they put Prilosec over the counter, they did change the format just a bit. I have to take 3 a day to cover what one used to do. But it does not make me gassy which is nice. So I take my 3 pink pills, one in the morning and 2 at night. And they work well for me. I do think it depends on each person's metabolism though as to how well they will work for that person.

I do hate the packaging for them though. I complained to the company,...
...

mailforkim2 says "Prilosec works great" about Prilosec OTC

I used to take Nexium. Now I take Prilosec. Prilosec works just as well. My new insurance company would not cover the Nexium pills. I cannot say I take it exactly as directed. I take it when I need it or when I know I am going to be eating something that most liiely will cause a flare up. I love how small the pills are too. Easy to swallow.

My doctor told me to take them anytime I am going to take an OTC like Aleve or Excederin. He says it will protect your stomach from damage.

It is expensive. I really feel like they could lower the price by cutting down on the packaging. I find them hard to get out of the little bubbles which can be really frustrating. If I had one recmmendation for the company it would be to just put the stuff in a bottle. If I cannot open them easily then I sure cannot imagine someone elderly being able to. They recently changed the packaging just a little. Now it is harder than ever to get them out.

I have acid reflux, ulcers and terrible heartburn. I have had to give up eating a lot of foods I love.

I use Prilosec OTC for my digestive problems. It is pricey and sometimes I try to cut back on it and I have a flare up. I will then need to take it twice a day for a few days to get relief, then I can go back to once a day.

It takes care of the worse heartburn as long as you remember to take it.

I would recommend Prilosec OTC to anyone who has a problem with heartburn.
...

BayouBengal says "Prilosec OTC is a Great Choice for Controling Acid Reflux" about Prilosec OTC

Prilosec OTC became my husband's standby when he ran out of his prescription for Zantac 150 mg. Both can be obtained over the counter now, but in the case of his prescription, it was cheaper to get it at the pharmacy than buy over the counter. His doctor would not refill his prescription without an office visit (dumb since he has been on this for several years), so that led to him trying Prilosec OTC. Why switch? Because I already had some at the house and it worked for me so he decided why not?

Prilosec OTC comes in boxes of 14, 28, and 42 count. The product works by blocking the acid with one dose a day. It is also great for frequent heartburn sufferers.

Active Ingredients

Omeprazole magnesium delayed-release tablet 20.6 mg (equivalent to 20 mg omeprazole)

My Thoughts on Prilosec OTC

The worst thing about starting Prilosec OTC is that it doesn't work immediately. You have to take it for a couple of days to two weeks for the medication to really kick in and prevent heartburn/acid...
...

I,at one point was a nurse and single mother. Needless to say,I, was severely stressed out. Anyway ,I ,ended up in hospital and a bleeding ulcer! Prilosec,at this time was a new medication, and no generic was yet available,so my physician prescribed this in the hospital and for everyday use for home, recovering, and thereafter. The Prilosec not only aided in healing my ulcer but stopped reflux, and indigestion. To this day,I, remain taking this, now generic is available called,Omeprazole. Now mind you this was safe for me,but please please,CHECK WITH YOUR PHYSICIAN,as you need liver function test on a regular basis. This is done via a blood test.I,personally prefer this medication, which is now available OTC:over the counter! But,I,can not stress enough to check with your physician first, and get a regular annual:yearly physical please. That all being said check it out for yourself and let us all know your opinion, too. Thank You!
...

I had a gastric lcer several years ago after taking ibuprofen for many years to alleviate the pain caused by a herniated lumbar disc. The ibuprofen relieved my pain quite well. Unfortunately it caused my gastric ulcer, which required surgery to repair and a long hospital stay, which proved to be very expensive. I was extremely fortunate to have had an excellent surgeon and have a minimally noticible abdominal scar. After my hospitalization my doctor, an internal mediine specialist, disussed meical options with me regarding actions and medications I could take in order to prevent getting another ulcer in the future. We both discussed the situation thoroughly. It was decided I should avoid ibuprofen and take omperazole 20 mg every day. To date I have had no indication of developing any type of ulcer again. Since this seems to be a successful plan of action, it has been agreed upon to continue in this manner.
...

I have suffered from gastro esophageal reflux for years. I have used used many over the counter products to try to control my condition. I have found the only medication that really keeps my condition in check is Prilosec OTC. You only have to take one once per day rather than only when your condition flairs up. There are a few downfalls to this product. It is costly if you have to take it daily, but none of the competitors medication for this condition are any cheaper. Also, if you don't take a daily continuous, but rather for 14-30 days and then stop, it seems like your condition might get worse for a day or two right after you go off and then goes back to normal or you might have to take another course. My condition is severe, so I take it everyday indefinitely. I've been taking it daily for over 2 years with no side effects and no flairs of my condition. It has eliminated my need for Tums or Rolaids or any other over the counter products.
...

Several years ago my husband began suffering from pains in his chest area. Not being sure of what this new burning pain in his chest was, he made an appointment with his doctor and was taken in right away. His doctor diagnosed him with having Acid Reflux disease. He prescribed him a very expensive medicine that he would have to take for the rest of his life. After checking with or insurance company and finding out that they would not cover the expense of that prescription, his doctor advised him to try Prilosec OTC to see if it would help. Well, thank goodness it did. It began to work in about 10 days or so and he has gone from taking it every day to taking it every few days. This medicine is awesome and heaven sent. He very rarely suffers from that terrible pain in his chest that had us both so scared. It's simple to use. Just take one tablet with water every morning. Don't chew or crush the tablet. It is a delayed release tablet and acid reducer. Don't take it...
...
