lawabidingcitizen says "WORST CAR RENTAL EVER !!!!!!" about Payless Car Rental

Laurie B. United States/Florida/Tampa [Sep 05, 2009]
This was the WORST car rental experience I have ever had. They made us wait for two hours even though I had a reservation. They attempted to saddle people with PT Cruisers for the economy car (how is that even close? even though I realize it fits the class--it is the worst gas mileage and worst to drive car) or you could pay to upgrade. I upgraded to a Nissan Ultima which was a mix of a standard and automatic. They did not explain this to me or have info in the car about it. They rented it to me as an automatic but it felt like a standard and I didn't know how to drive a standard. I was in FL for my mom's funeral and my experiences with this company made everything even worse. I complained to the company about the above and they promised to reimburse me $15.00 for my troubles. Instead--they never did this. They sent me a notice Sept. 4 that I had gone through a toll without paying. This was not true--I had a transponder and the toll on......

KPow says "Payless Car rental in Montreal....Stay Away!" about Payless Car Rental

If you don't like headaches then stay away from Payless car rental in Montreal. They make it easy with little to no signage in an area that's confusing to drive through as it is.

This is the worst rental car agency in the city. When we finally found the office, there was a line up and only one person working there. We waited 45 mins to get served. The representative was not friendly at all and while I was waiting he was having another woman call her credit card company to get confirmation that she had personal insurance and didn't need any from them. (rediculous....her credit card company had no idea what the representative was talking about.) Then I found out that the reservation that my travel agent confirmed was not valid anymore because I was traveling to the US and now I had to pay a higher rate and there were no longer any unlimited kms. (Companys like Hertz, Avis or Budget have never done this to me in the past.) Then the insurance they sold only came in packages that were much...
...

alatual says "Wait times of over an hour for a dirty car!" about Payless Car Rental

I recently reserved a car from Payless in Orlando and the price was right. Much to my dismay, when the Payless shuttle bus dropped my wife and I off at the Payless rental office, there was this extremely long line of people waiting to rent cars. The people in line were complaining about the long waits and people who just received their cars were saying that they had to wait over an hour and would never rent from Payless again. I had no choice but to wait for my reserved car and it was 1 hour and 10 minutes before I got to the counter and was helped by an agent. The agent handled the rental process well and I got my car. Unfortunately, the car had a few dings which were noted in my agreement and the inside of the car was pretty dirty. The gas tank was full and the car ran fine but the whole Payless operation was pretty low class, not enough agents were provided to handle the large amount of customers and many of the Payless personel were unprofessional looking. Bottom line...
...

Where do I start?

Rented a car in Orlando. All of the other-mentioned cons happened (long lines, scare tactics, etc.) but it is what happened afterward which soured me to this company.

The vehicle upon checkout was 1/4 full with fuel, the mileage was incorrect and there was minor damage (scratches/dents) to the rear passenger door. I ran back inside to grab our agent and he noted these things on my copy of the agreement and signed.

Upon return, the new and different agent blew me off when I mentioned these things and indicated we were good to go. Get home and get a charge of $716!!

We are incorrectly being charged for who knows what (they won't get back to me). The mileage out was erroneously noted as 12,805! For a one-week stay?? I don't think so.

And the damage had clearly been painted/primed over.

I'm duking this out with the credit card company - I have requested vehicle detail history too. We'll see....
...

edav333 says "Payless Car Rental Company - Worse Rental Company" about Payless Car Rental

"Payless Car Rental" Santo Domingo Office in Dominican Republic has unsafe cars. Please do not rent from this location if you value your life. One of my tires blew on my second day of driving and we have driven less than 30 miles in two days. Went back to the office and was provided a new car, but all the tires were worn out. Requested the SUV with the only good tires on the lot, but was denied. We had to select three tires from two cars and even help changed the tires to the car we end up with. We had to select the best three tires from the worse and ended up not even taking short trips besides going to and from the hotel.

This location even used the old manual credit card machine and printed two carbon copies. They even photo copied my drivers license and card information. A week later I had an additional charge to my credit card for a plane ticket from Malaysia to Vietnam. This location is very shady and may have sold my information. Luckily my credit card company...
...

I made a weekly reservation with Payless because it was cheap compared to the other rental companies, but when i went to pick the car at the offiste location in New Jersey they first asked me where i am going and after that showed me rental agreement that said i have to pay 15$ more per day for driving to upstate NY (Albany, Buffalo)...

Turns out that this is indeed hidden in the car agreement and is even available online. If i had known this before i would have just rented with onsite company for less price.

So I paid full price, but the customer service represetnative was appaling - he didnt ask me what car i wanted, just gave me a car and asked me to take it leave it ... I had no choice since i had my family with me. The car had 11K miles on it but was decent had 3/4ths of tank full.

I won't ever rent from this company again even if its 50% cheap ...
...

EXTREMELY Unprofessional company and a bunch of cheaters. They cheated me twice. They over-charged me for a couple of hundred dollars and when after a month I noticed it in my bank statement, they said it was just a normal mistake!!!

I made the mistake of being lured by their cheap cars, but their policies, fine prints, service and professionalism is the worst. Eventually I paid much more than I would have paid to Hertz or budget care rental.

Save yourself the trouble and avoid getting cheated. Pay a little more upfront to avoid hidden costs later, and get treated well.

Beware of fine print in their policies, you will pay much more!!

Rented in South San Francisco, CA (near SF Airport).
Was quoted one price; however, this location charges an EXTRA $5/day if you pay with your Visa debit card. My Visa card is all I have, so I got stuck paying the extra $$$.
The car was very smelly and dirty with stains and cigarette burn holes. The passenger side floor was dirty (looked like sand on the floor).
While I was at the counter another lady who had just gotten her keys to her rental came running in to inquire about the bad cigarette smell in her rental. The manager said the cars are all non-smoking.
I had to use incense to get the smell out of my rental.
The "good" part of my experience was that I did not have to wait long at the rental agency.
...

I came to rent a car with Payless at Las Vegas. The front desk lady was real cute & sweet. She told us she was giving us a free upgrade.

It was a scam. Not until after I had signed the papers and received my bill did I find that they charged 20$ extra -a day- for that "free" upgrade. When I called up to complain, they just told me it was my fault for signing the papers. It also took 5 calls before they'd even consider listening to me.

Yes, I know it was stupid not to check the fine print. But that is still not a good way to run a business. I will never rent with them again.

If it was 5$ a day, I wouldn't have complained. But 20$? They are seriously milking this. Be careful of cute front desk ladies and thier "sweet" deals....

Rented from Payless at Orlando airport over Thanksgiving holiday. A shuttle bus was waiting when I got to the curb, and it took me to the rental facility promptly, even though I was the only passenger. However, a very long line waited for me when I arrived. It took at least 20 minutes to get to the counter. The person at the counter was pleasant and offered a larger car at the same price.

Once I found the car, I realized it had a ding in the passenger door, which was not marked on the form I signed. There was no one in the gate at the exit, so I had to go back to the counter to make sure the ding was recorded on the sheet before I left the lot.

The car worked out great and I had no problems during the five-day rental. The return was quick and easy, and no unexpected charges showed up on the receipt....

I have never had a rental company not rent to me because I didn't have my insurance card on me. Who travels w/ their insurance card? And to top it off... It was Sunday. What insurance company is open on Sunday!! The manager was rude & so... I travel w/ a comfy pair of walking shoes!!...

Rented a car in Tampa, FL for 4 days in Nov 07 at Payless. We waited over a half hour in line. There were 2 people ahead of us, only 1 person was taking the reservations, other people were working but seemed to just keep wandering around and then dissapear.

The person ahead of us said to the employee, "Look, I said I didn't want the extra insurance. There are people waiting, I don't need the sales pitch." The employee then yelled, "This is a full disclosure rental company. I can put you back on the shuttle!" The full disclosure policy involves scare tactics-"Your insurance is not enough coverage. If you are in an accident, then the car will have to be repaired and the part may be on back order and this could take 60 days and you will have to pay for the car the entire time."

He then asked us if we would like to upgrade our car, we asked what the mid-size would be. He said, "Like a Nissan Sentra". He had the key at that time. After we signed the paperwork he told us to take our 2 door mustang.......

A rental car is a commodity, right? I just wanted a cheap car for my week-long business trip to Las Vegas last week and Payless fit the bill.

Bottom line: I'd rent from Payless again.

What I Got

I reserved my rental car through Travelocity and Payless was listed as the least expensive company for a compact car, around $109 for a week (before taxes). Fees and taxes on rental cars are exhorbitant in Las Vegas, but that is not the fault of the rental car company. Just be aware that Las Vegas car rentals cost much more than you expect, due to high fees and taxes. The total was $162 after all the fees and taxes were added -- again, these fees and taxes apply to all rentals at the Las Vegas airport, so this is not a reflection on Payless.

All car rentals at the Las Vegas airport are now handled through a single large rental center. This includes just about every car company, including Hertz, Avis, National, Payless, Dollar and so forth. You need to take a generic car rental bus to the rental center,...
...
