smccarth1968 says "This is my second Oreck and I'm still not sure it's worth the $$" about Oreck XL

I have to say, I'm still not sure how I feel about the Oreck. I received my first one 6 years ago as a gift (they're pretty pricey). While I do love the lightweight nature of the Oreck (our house has many levels so I'm always carrying it up and down the stairs) I feel like I was bringing it in for maintenance all the time - at least twice a year. For the money you spend on the vaccuum, it should at least be solidly-built.

We have 3 dogs (gold retrievers) so I do end up doing a lot of vacuuming, but we only have carpet in the bedrooms - everything else is either tile or hardwood. Maybe that's the problem - non-carpeted floors - but the first one had issues with the motor after the first year, the rollers kept getting out of whack and the wheels would start going wobbly. I can do some light maintenance myself - clean the brush at the bottom, change the belt - but I always ended up having to bring it in.

When the old one died I brought it into the store one last time to see if it was worth...
...

The Oreck XL MiscroSweep Cleaning System vacuum is great! I used to have a Kirby and am so glad to finally get rid of that beast. It would even scare the dog. Now I am a proud owner of the Oreck XL which only weighs 8 pounds, has lots of suction power and two speeds for floor or carpet. It has a antimicrobial protection. Easy to operate. Easy to change the filtered bags. Has side sweepers to sweep the dirt/dust away from walls. It sucks up pet hair with no problem and is just an overall wonderul vacuum to have in your household.
...

I have owned my oreck Xl for 4 years now. Before the oreck I have owned inexpensive from lo9cal dept stores to rainbows and kirby's for over $2000 and the oreck was bought for me because i had just had hand surgery that caused permanent weakness, so it was purchased for the "lightweight" feature. I LOVE LOVE LOVE it!!!! it is so light weight my 3 yr old granddaughter can push it. it has never lost suction and it came with a free light weight cannister vac. with a shoulder strap. did i say free? so i bought mine on QVC which enabled to me to put it on 4 easy payments. and since I am now on disability that was a great help. i strongly recommend this sweeper with any disability that requires a light weight but high preformance sweeper.
...

inkydew says "Oreck XL hyper-allergenic is a powerful, lightweight vacuum." about Oreck XL

The Oreck XL hypo-allergenic upright vacuum is a purchase that I never regretted. My first XL was purchased 12 yrs. ago and it finally was "put to rest" 6 months ago. I repurchased same model but of course newer, and have not regretted the move. The price might seem high but it paid me back many times over.

As a senior, I found that the light weight feature was very important to me. The suction is very good. I can clean on carpet and wood and tile floors. The only things I've had to change out were the belt (once in 5 years) and the disposable dirt bags. I think the most exciting thing about the Oreck is that i can change out parts myself! It makes me feel soooo talented! LOL! I can unsnap the plastic tubing to get out clogged debris, change the belt, remove the rollers...etc. It's like reconstructing a simple puzzle. I almost feel like being called a mechanic! I have a very large home and this Oreck XL does the job! The mini portable vacuum I got free with the purchase,...
...

The Oreck XL upright vacuum cleaner is the best and my favorite vacuum of all time. Now that they moved the on/off from the bottom to a switch on the arthritis-friendly handle, it's perfect. It weighs about 8 pounds and steers like a dream. The little brushes on the side edges of the vacuum at the bottom are great for getting in close to walls and underneath furniture. Also great is the fact that it comes with an extra belt stored right in its own spot on the bottom of the vacuum. Headlight is helpful and since the footprint isn't too big, you can get in and out of some of the tightest spots. Of course, the rubber edge protects things if you misjudge your closeness to objects anyway. The bag seems to hold a lot and last a very long time -- I think this has something to do with the way it fills. Oreck vacuums last forever too, even with frequent use. Highly recommend over any other vacuum.
...

I really like the light weight of this Oreck vacuum -- I have back problems, and this is the one vacuum I've used that doesn't kill my back. It's even better than a self-propelled vacuum. The only thing I don't like, and this applies to almost all vacuums, is that it doesn't get under low ledges very well.
...

Phoenixblonde61 says "Oreck XL, it's vacuming at it's best!" about Oreck XL

I purchased my Oreck XL 4 + years ago. I have to say it's the best vacum I have ever owned. I used to end up purchasing a new vacum every 2 years if not sooner because they just seem to stop working well after awhile. This is not the case with Oreck XL. It cleans as well today as it did the day I bought it. My carpets still look fresh and professionally cleaned every time I use it.

It's Lightweight and easy for me to handle. I have had several spine surgeries and I am still able to vacum my own home because this machine is so light. I also love the fact that my furniture isn't dustier after I vacum. The oreck has Hypo-Allergenic Filtration and Filters 99.9% of particles down to .3 microns.

I also use my Oreck outside in the garage. I have a section of the garage that has a room rug on the floor. It cleans that rug just as well as it does the rugs and floors inside the house.

Oreck has a great warranty for their products. I do take my Oreck XL in every year for maitenece upkeep which is...
...

tab1cal says "Great for a vacuum, but not worth the price" about Oreck XL

I purchased the Oreck XL 7 years ago for $300 and got the "free handheld vac and cordless iron" to boot. My vacuum has lasted well these years in the process of 4 relocations and lots of vacuuming after pets and children. The cordless iron bit the dust 2 years ago, but I wasn't happy with how it didn't stay warm. My handheld vac has worked well in cleaning out the vehicles as well as indoor carpeted stairs. But here recently, it seems to have lost its suction power. But back to the upright...

I like how I can go from carpet to floor and back without having to adjust height. And I have had high pile to no pile carpet to clean. It picks up dirt very well, even doing wonderful in competition to the infamous Kirby vacuum demonstration.

Pros:

Very lightweight, easy to use throughout pregnancies and carrying a baby in arms while vacuuming.

Catches and picks up dirt and keeps it in; it doesn't filter back out into the air.

Long cord allows for lots of vacuuming without having to stop and...
...

I am not happy with the Oreck. It is an expensive purchase and does not work well. The rubber strip at the bottom burns out so I have to replace it often. It doesn't pick up everything on the rug. And it doesn't work well on floors. I am unable to get into corners or under the bed/couch. Getting replacement bags is inconvenient because I have to go to the specific Oreck store. Replacement bags can not be purchase at the general stores such as Walmart or Target. The only benefit is that it is light to carry.
...

The first Oreck XL I got, overheated within 3-6 months of use. My local dealer refused to give me a refund, but did replace it with a new unit. Same problems.....not very efficient at picking up cat or human hair, constant faint rubber burning smell. Have not used it in three years. Was not informed when I bought the Oreck that it would need tune ups every three months at a cost of $25 each time to keep it running. Have never heard of vacuum cleaner tune ups so often. The Oreck XL is just not a very powerful vacuum. Dont bother to waste your money on this lemon....
