oduhmpt says "Love the campus and classes, not so much student housing" about Old Dominion University

DORMS: I am a current ODU freshman this year and although I only live 20 minutes away i chose to stay on campus to get "the full experience", for me, this was a mistake. Housing put me in a dorm that i had not even applied to be in. Upon arrival all was good. Turns out I am in the loudest dorm on campus and roommate compatibility is not as high as hoped for. Tried for a room change but they "had nowhere else to put me". It is c to get any work done while living in the dorm. My solution is that I'm moving home where I can focus and although I won't be living on campus as I had wished i think it will make my situation more stable and me more successful as a student.

CLASSES AND CAMPUS: On the other hand, all my classes are great and most people who i meet are really nice.
...

Old Dominion University is a nice medium sized univerisity located in Norfolk, Virginia. It is somewhat selective but not as bad as some schools. It is not too hard to transfer in. Tuition is roughly $7,000 a year. There is a lot to do in Hampton Roads. There is Virgina Beach about 30 minutes away. Downtown Norfolk is about 15 minutes away. There are tons of cute little shops in an area called Ghent. It has a good social scene between local clubs, house parties and the greek life. You can live on or off campus. There are tons of apartments. Classes are small and they are actually taught by professor. Teaching assistants are only used for science lab courses. Teachers are friendly and you can always got to them for help if you need it. It's nice to be at a school where teachers actually know your name. There are a lot of majors to choose from. Also, there are tons of clubs to get involved in.
...

monarx says "A fun, growing campus and sound academics" about Old Dominion University

ODU was founded as a division of William & Mary in 1930. It is a good school that is getting even better. Their academic programs and reputation have improved significantly over the last decade or more. The campus is more urban and quite modern, so you don't have many cobblestone streets or old architecture etc. ODU has nationally respected programs in science, technology and medicine including partnerships with EVMS. It also has over 20,000 students and an ever-growing amount of housing options. You'll hear that this is mostly a commuter school, but thats not really the case any more. The vast majority of freshman now live on campus and lots of undergrads live in the surrounding neighborhoods. The additions of the "university village" with restaurants, shops & bars, the new basketball arena and the brand new football stadium are making for a pretty cool place to live and study. The proximity to the oceanfront at Virginia Beach, waterfront dorm options and being near downtown Norfolk and...
...

usnnc says "Notraditional, off-site classes - can be a lifesaver" about Old Dominion University

"Let's do it another way," seems to be a consistant trait of Old Dominion University, of Norfolk, Virginia. This university grew out of William and Mary to establish another way of learning. ODU is a leader in the non-traditional method of education. Even in the far-off reaches of Arizona, Georgia and ships-at-sea, ODU is there via direct link or videostreaming. Program coursework can be taken, and a program completed, off site simply by sitting at a computer or in front of a linked TV, and watching the class in "real time" or on tape as it happened on the ODU campus. Off-site students get the same tests as the students sitting in class. Everything is the same, except some students are elsewhere.

Should you try this? A 3-year experience left me saying, YES! if you are mature, committed to finishing your degree and don't mind classes with few people to interact with (the class may be just you interacting with the professor via computer/microphone). If you are the type who still likes......

I had a blast my four years at ODU. I was a student athlete, which definently made it more enjoyable for me. The school has made a lot of improvements since I left and they're also getting a football team. The school has a variety of classes and is very diverse. The one thing I didn't like too much was it was more of a commuter school, I like the college town feel, but it was still a cool place to live. There was a lot to do and your only about 15 minutes from the beach!!!...

The school is big, but not so big. so that one can still walk from builing to building, and still be on time for classes. They have a wonderful international program, which makes for a very diverse student body. On campus housing is getting better, with a new facility called the "Quad" just being finished this year. This should make for students having more school spirit and ODU pride....

I love the may different programs that ODU offers. I received my BS from here and will soon receive my MS. I will probably attend a different school for my PhD, only because many employers would like a person to have attended more than just the one school. I am a very bisy person and do not want to have to drive miles to get to classes. ODU offers many televised classes in the local area, so that ore people can attend and gain their education. ...
