Nim's Island was something I expected to like, but didn't expect that I'd really think it was fantastic. Perhaps I was in the mood for a fantasy film, or perhaps I just really liked the idea of living on a beautiful secret secluded island! Whatever it was, I really enjoyed this movie.

Only two people live on Nim's Island. Jack is a scientist who is only really interested in single-cell beings. He found this island and has vowed to keep it away from civilization. The only person he shares it with is his daughter Nim. Around 12 or so, Nim is loving the island life. She is friends with the sea lions, the birds and the lizards. Life is good for Nim and Jack. Her favorite hobby is to read books about Alex Rover - an adventurous guy who goes on amazing trips and saves people in his stories.

I really appreciated that they explained everything so that it seemed realistic. They had their own satellites for their phone/computer to work so they weren't cut off from the world....

Nim's Island

We've seen several of the newest movies for kids released in 2008 including Horton Hears A Who, Wall-E, Kung-Fu Panda and Tinkerbell. The hands downs favorite was Nim's Island.

Nim's Island stars Abigail Breslin (Little Miss Sunshine, Kit Kittredge) as Nim, the fabulous Jodie Foster, as writer Alexandra (Alex) Rover and Gerard Butler in a dual role as Nim's Dad and the Alex Rover hero from Alexandra Rover's adventure series.

While Nim and her scientist Dad, Jack, live a secluded life in the South Asiatic Sea, Alexandra Rover lives a self-imposed secluded life in her townhouse. It seems that the author of the heroic adventure series is in fact an agoraphobic who is so afraid to leave her house that she has massive amounts of Purel hand-sanitizer delivered and then struggles to even pick them up from outside of her door.

Unlike Kevin's parents in Home Alone who simply overlook leaving Kevin, Nim's Dad unwisely agrees to let Nim stay at home to watch for and protect turtles......

Nim's Island

The basics:

A young girl named Nim grows up on a deserted island with her scientist father, surrounded with her island friends and an addiction to a literary hero named Alex Rover. When her father goes missing she intercepts an e-mail from Alex Rover, who turns out to be the author of her favorite hero - but what Nim does not know - Alex is actually Alexandra. A recluse writer, who hasn't left her home in years but summons the courage (from her own hero) to go to Nim in her time of need.

My viewpoint:

This was such a lighthearted comedy - perfect for kids and adults a like. The cinematography is amazing and the island animals are (with Nim's help), hilarious! Jody Foster plays the part of Alexandra and she kept me giggling throughout the whole movie. This is one to see for anyone young at heart!

I watched an interview with Jodi Foster on the CBS Early Show when she was promoting this movie and from the movie clip I saw and the interview, I'd say kids will love this movie and teens too (at least the teens who don't think they're already grown up will).

The interaction with the animal and the girl would make this movie of interest to anybody who is very interested in animals, animal training and animal behavior. Also, the girl has to "pull some things together" to achieve her goals, much like the MacGuyver TV show, so fans of A-Team, MacGuyver and similar stories would probably like this movie as well.

Nim's Island

Abigail Breslin heads up this superb cast which includes Veteran Jodie Foster and the handsome Gerard Butler.

Living secluded on an undiscovered island, Nim and her Scientist father enjoy their privacy. While gone overnight in search of a new Protozoan, Jack (Gerard Butler) encounters a monsoon and is lost at sea. Back on the island, Nim (Abigail Breslin) is holding down the fort and reading her new book about adventure hero, Alex Rover.

At the same time in San Francisco, CA....Alex Rover, the Author, is stuck on the next installment of Alex Rover Adventure Hero's book. In search of some information about volcanoes, she emails a scientist recognized in National Geographic who has written about living on an island with a volcano. Guess who that Scientist is? That's right...Jack, NIm's father!

Alex Rover begins sending emails to Jack and Nim reveals that she is an 11 year old girl alone on the island while her father is lost at sea.

Alex Rover sets out on an adventure...

Nice family film that holds the interest of all in the audience. Something the parents can appreciate, and the children will enjoy the storyline with the involvement of animals....

Delightfully enjoyable movie. The father/daughter relationship was heart warming. Scenery was very nice, including dad/adventure hero. Loved the pets. Good message to always be prepared. The transcontinental journey was unrealistic and a distraction. Was a nice feel good movie with a bit of everything in the mix....

Nim's Island is the perfect imagination film. It is the story of a little girl who is left alone on a deserted island that her scientist Father found. While he is out searching for a new protozoea, Nim is left to defend the island from pirates with a little help from her animal friends, and has contact with her only human source to the outside world, a writer who is afraid to go outside of her house, that writes Nim's favorite adventure books.

This movie has all great elements in it. Romance, surprise, fear, action, adventure. A great family film!

Nim's island is a great fantasy movie. For adults it is necessady to suspend belief but all in all, a great film with very strong charaters, especially the women.

I went to see this movie with my two nieces and we loved it, we just laughed & laughed. Nim is so cute. I love Jodie Fosters character especially when she thinks she is going to have death by firefly and when she tells the captain she is having a nervous breakdown this was a perfect Family Flick. I would watch it over & over. I love all the ocean scenes. Especially the turtle swimming by the boat it was a airial scene and the glowing plankton ..... it made me want to smell the ocean....

This movie was awesome, I took my neice and nephew and we all hated to see it end. It will be a good movie to reflect on when lifes road is a little rocky....

This was a great movie for kids to see. It contains some scary elements, so I wouldn't recommend for children under 8 years old. A family near us brought a 2 year old girl, which i thought was completely inappropriate (especially when they had to remove her mid-movie). Going back and forth between reality and imagination was well done....
