I have been using the Nikon D50 with my students in photography for the last semester and I must say that these cameras are built like tanks. Kids really don't care for them well, but there have been no issues with any of them so far except for a vandalized USB port. These cameras take pictures of amazing quality and are really easy to use. My students and I love the knob that lets you select many different types of features from motion and macro to landscape and night photos. One cool feature is the bulb mode, where you can use flashlights to draw anything that the camera will capture. For example, our class drew names, wings, and halos using a Nikon D50. The students enjoy using these cameras and I recommend them for any aspiring photographer or professional. These cameras are useful whether you know nothing about taking pictures or even if you have been doing it for years. The versatility and quality of the images is worth every penny!
...

This wasn't my first digital camera but the first time I ownes a Nikon. This was given to me as a gift and I know little about cameras. The instruction book was easy to understand and I had no problem setting the camera up. I was amazed hoe great the pictures turned out. It has sharp colors and picked up on the details of the object or objects you are taking. I took lots of pictures of my grandchildren during their sporting events and they were as clear as could be. I love the different settings. There is one for children or one for action. I also used it at the races. Every picture was clear. There wasn't any shadows from the pictures. There are a dozen different settings for it. It is wonderful. My husband wasn't taking clear pictures so I set it on auto he had no problem after that. I would advise anyone to get this camera. The auto is great for the beginners until you get to know your camera and get to play around with it. You can take all kinds of crazy pictures and delete them if...
...

I bought my Nikon D50 2 years ago. I bought it for the inteded use of starting my own photography business. I am now a proud owner of my own on location photography business!!! My camera works great and I have added more lenses to my collection. I love that I can switch my lenses to get the effect or distance that I need. I dont have anything negative to say about the Nikon products. If I have ever had a question or concern the website has always been able to offer assistance.

I know that the D50 is an older model, but the body style is much easier to navigate then some of the others. I would recommend this camera to others and have on many occasions.
...

Great start up camera. Stock lense is horrible. My sister had the same package and it broke within the first year for both of us. Get an extra lense on hand. Some production dates had battery charger issues were the battery would catch fire an ende up being recalled.

Still use this as a regular camera 4yrs later. D60 is replacement model--no D40. D40 is technically a "coolpix" model and even in Japan they state that in owners manual. D60 is a downgrade from D50 w/less features.

great start out camera. Not professional at all.
...

The Canon D50 was a little scary for me at first but after reading quickly through the manual it was fantastic. If you are an amateur photographer like I am, then I strongly suggest setting the camera to the auto focus setting. This will let the camera do the focusing for you. However, there are times when I want the focus to be on a further object and it focuses on the closer item. You can also press the button numerous times and the camera will show you in the screen what area it's focusing on. I do suggest reading the manual for using the special features. As I only take pictures for pleasure, I sometimes forget how to change the settings, but the manual is very well planned out and I've always been able to find the information that I need. This camera takes beautiful pictures, once I figured out the focus. I love the night time picture taking feature. I also have enjoyed the feature that allows me to take multiple pictures with a push of the button. This has made...
...

This is my 3rd Nikon purchase--the Nikon D50. I've been so happy in the past with my SLR and digital cameras from Nikon, that I could not wait to purchase a DSLR. I have not been disappointed. It takes pictures just like the SLR I have been missing for so many years. It's easy to change lenses. So easy to get the exact shot I want! I have not had a need to use the manual as of yet, but it's comforting to know it's there for reference. So far, I have been able to play around easy enough with the settings to make the camera do exactly what I'm looking for in my pictures. If I could change one thing, it would be the flash--it is only in one position, which interferes at times with a particular shot I'm trying to get. It takes great shots from action sports, to low light, to scenery, to people. What ever your need may be, this is a great camera! It's quite easy to move from automatic mode to manual mode.
...

I've been using my Nikon D-50 (a lot) since March 2006, and I just love it. I take an average of almost 10,000 photos per year (27,800 so far in just over 3 years). I bought the 2-lens kit that comes with the 18-55mm and 55-200mm lens, and I use the 18-55 most of the time. I also bought a 3rd Nikon lens (28-80mm), and that's my current favorite. When I go to University of Michigan baseball games, I switch to my 55-200mm lens and get photos as good as the professionals covering the games.

It took me a while to figure out some of the more obscure features of the camera, but not that long to become comfortable with the features I use 95% of the time. The viewfinder and status screen are both easy to view and understand, and the menu system is pretty easy to navigate. The viewfinder is clear and bright, and it contains enough information so I don't need to take my eye off of it to look at the status screen.

Some people have complained about the size/weight of the camera, but I...
...

The Nikon D50 is a very good perforner on the market of digital single lens reflex camera's. Nikon is a well known brand and therefore the Nikon D50 at the introduction was allready a winner. Compaired to other Nikon DSLR's in the price range (approx $ 700 body only for the D50) the D50 has a few things different :

- Just one command dial on the back (in M mode you set the apature while holding the e/v button and scrolling with the major command dial on the back. personally i don't miss the secon command dial (like that of a D70(s) )

- New Auto focus mode , AF-A (it also has AF-S and AF-C) in AF-A the camera detects if the objects are moving or not , if it detects motion it switched to AF-C (continoius focus) else it stays in singel autofocus

- a slightly higher medium resolution compaired to the D70(s)

- only 420 AF lines but a higher field range , with 5 AF focus points

- Child mode , this is fine for shooting childern/todlers..

Size and weigth is light and small, but wehn you compair it...
...

Nikon d5o does a great job of taking great pictures for either a novice or professional. It has the ability to even take great shots of action as football games which I was able to shot pictures of the punter going to the ball to his foot hitting the ball and the take-off of the ball with great calirty and detail.. I would not even consider another brand of camera than NIkon. I first became impressed with Nikon in Japan at a demo in a camera shop and bought my first in Viet Nam for a unusally cheap price at a military exhcange and have owned several over the years since 1971. Great camera and fair price with so many options that can add to the fun and enjoyment of taking pictures that will last a lifetime....

This is a great camera that works great and is easy to use...if you read the helpful manual, if not, the basic functions are easy to operate. There are several picture modes to pick from, my personal favorite is the portrait mode, where the background is slightly blurred to be sure that your main focus is on the person and not what's behind them.

I love that I can switch from automatic to manual with just a flip of the switch. I can then blur the entire picture slightly or alot depending on the effect I want to achieve. You can take what's called RAW pictures, I've heard that it's something alot of professionals are using now, but I have never used this.

One of my favorite things about this camera is that I can change the lens very easily. This is a helpful feature in buying this camera as well as using it. If you cant afford a very large lens at the moment you can get the camera with a smaller lens on it and then buy larger lenses as you go. This is what I did. The camera came with a small...
...

I'm a Canon girl myself but had to purchase this Nikon D50 for my job (Real Estate Phtography). I shoot 1-10 house a day at on average about 150 pictures per house (16 shots per virtual, roughly 5 virtuals plus 12+ stills). At the one year mark, I had to bring it into the shop. These cameas are great for the "normal" photographer, say 200-300 pictures per day. As a heavy user, they aren't made for the regular wear and tear that I put it through. I do like the fact that it is light weight and it does take great pictures.

I did learn that if you are not using your DSLR's that you should store them in a plastic bag to keep the dust from getting into the camera. Also when you are focusing you should not make short fast movements as that sucks dust into your camera, causing you to have it cleaned more often at about $60 a pop.

I've got the 18-55 lens and the 70-300 lens and love them both. When I'm not shooting houses I love to shoot lndscape and wildlife - and the zoom allows me...
...

I guess you can say I am a semi professional photographer as I have used the camera for work and pleasure. I took photos for our local newspaper and have even begun to sell some of my own on a stock photography website. This product was well worth the money and I would recommend it to anyone!...
