I baught my Nikon d40 1 year ago and have taken over 1000 pictures with it. I'm not a profesional just a hobbyists. I love taking pictures of wildlife and nature around New England (R.I.)area.

The Nikon D40's performance is excellent overall. Start-up time is good, and shutter lag at wide angle and telephoto is very good. "Prefocus" times (half-pressing and holding down the shutter button before the final exposure) are quite fast as well, with a shutter delay in that condition of only 0.098 second. Shot-to-shot cycle times are also good at about 0.6 seconds for large/fine JPEGs, and the camera captures frames continuously at this rate. Continuous-mode speed is close to being as stated with noise reduction off, coming it at 2.5 frames per second. With noise reduction on, however, it's quite a bit slower, at about 1.65 frame/second. The flash recycles at about 4.8 seconds after a full-power shot, which is commendable, particularly given the excellent range of the D40's flash. Connected to...
...

D40 has been worth every penny. Often the photo lab does not believe that they are not from a pro! I am able to capture so many shot that my point and shot was not able to. I hope to add more lens to the camera to get more shots and will hopefully be able to take a class to get even better photos. But as little as I do know, I am amazed at how easy it is to use and the great photos we get. Awesome, awesome camera!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
...

I bought this camera as a compliment to my current professional system based on the Nikon D2X. It's a great "walking around" camera for a pro as it will do all the things that pros are used to asking of a camera, great nikon metering, kit lens is decent, programming and screen quality are par with the flagship D2X. All this makes it the perfect 2nd camera or "pro's snap shot camera". I would not consider doing pro work with it, that's the X is for, but as far as it shooting excellent quality, tough nikon build quality, superior metering and battery performance for, so far in my testing, over 600 shots! The downside is, and I say this as primarily a prime lens shooter, it will only AF with AF-S or AF-i lenses, or those with built in focusing motors. Yes, this kinda sucks, but really only to those who probably rely on AF too much anyways. The novices will probably only use AF-S lenses and the kit lens at that. As a pro, I tend to shoot the D2X full manual and often only turn on AF when needing...
...

I took the plunge and bought the Nikon D40 in a package deal that came w/the 18-55 mm lense and the 75-200 mm lense and I have since purchased the 200-300 mm lense. It was my big switch over from the film Canon Rebel.

I am so happy w/this camera I can't even tell you. In the past, I had to carry two cameras to shoot weddings because one was in color and the other in black and white film. Plus, I wasted so much film and developing costs because I couldn't view and delete the duds.

I can edit on my camara, on my printer, and on my photoshop elements 7. I can do things to photos that I never imagined possible.

My sister in law has the D60 and I don't see any difference in them except hers has higher mega pixels, but if I'm not planning to shoot anything for something larger than a 10x14 portrait, then it doesn't matter anyway.

I can say that my photography business would not be growing, or maybe even possible if it weren't for my Nikon D40 SLR camara.
...

For the price I paid for this Nikon D40 Digital SLR Camera, I am for the most part...satisfied. I paid under $500 for the camera figuring I am an amutuer photographer. I did not want to jump right into the most expensive one I could find. I liked that if I like it I could always get new lenses then in return if I decided to get another camera (I would get another Nikon) I could use those lenses for the new camera as well. I have found that it is quite easy to use and I really like the options it has....although I have recently become interested in HDR photography and that is the one thing the D40 does not have is the HDR function. Other than that it is a great camera for the budding photographer.

I am very impressed witht he quality of photos I am now able to take...and most have been taken with out the automatic feature...thanks to the somewhat helpful book it came with as well as some advice from my brother. All in all I am really happy with my decision to purchae the Nikon...
...

If you want to break into the digital world without spending a fortune but you're not sure what camera is best, I would highly recommend getting the Nikon D40 Digital Camera with the 18-55mm Lens. Nikon has so many great cameras out, but comparing and contrasting you will see that the Nikon D40 can do just as much as the Nikon D90 or D70. This camera has been out for quite some time, so the price has gone down and can be purchased refurbished on brand new on Amazon.com for a good price. This camera takes amazing shots with so little effort. The first time I used this camera I took it to Paris, France with me and the shots were stunning. I know use this camera for corporate events, nature and travel photography. I am always happy with the images I get from this camera. The camera is very user friendly, is light to carry and has very little setup. In my personal opinion the best place to buy this camera is Best Buy, they have the greatest insurance/warranty packages. A good idea with this...
...

I have the Nikon D40 Digital Camera. I got it as a Christmas present from my husband. I can't believe how close I can get to everything with my 200 lens and how clear the images are. I have always been interested in photography but I have never had a camera good enough to do the things that I wanted to do. Now I find myself taking pictures of everything. If I am at an school event or such, and I see someone that doesn't have a Camera I will offer to take pictures for them and email them the pictures. It is great practice for me.

Because the Nikon D40 is digital I can download my pictures with ease onto my computer and crop the images, change colors, change the pictures. However I want without having to wait for the lab to send my pictures back, and then you are at the mercy of the person that develops them to whether or not you like them. There are also so many different settings on the camera itself, I'm still learning what they all do. I'm very excited to have such a great camera.
...

I purchased the Nikon D40 with high expectations. I was conviced by the salesman that Nikon is a leader in the industry of DSLR's and that they are great for first time SLR camera owners. I was not dissappointed.

I have owned the camera now for over 3 years and it has been a very reliable and easy camera to use. The Nikon D40 has automatic settings that can help make even the greenest of photographers look like pros, but it also has the manual settings to meet the basic needs of even the most advanced photographers.

I have used this camera in all kinds of settings including sports action and although it doesn't have the frames per second (fps) that some of the more advanced cameras out there (it shoots 2.5 fps and other models shoot between 3-7 fps) I was still able to get the shots I wanted.

One of the best things about the Nikon D40 and what drew me to it, was the size of the camera body. The Nikon D40 fits into anybody's hand. Even my 6 yr old is able to hold the camera...
...

We bought the Nikon D40 because we have two small children under three years old and we wanted to get pictures of them that were not blurred. This camera worked great for what we needed it for. We have gotten tons of pictures of them both actually looking at the camera. Almost too many, it is taking a lot more time to go through and pick out the good pictures.

My only complaint is that it does not have a great zoom lense that comes with it and it is expensive to buy. Besides that it is great. It did take some time to get used to looking through the view finder again as it does not show the image on the digital screen until after the picture is taken.

The battery lasts forever. I have only had to charge the battery a few times and I leave the power on accidentally a lot.

I recommend getting a case that is easy to open, just a clip, not a zipper. The whole process is a little clumsier than it is with a little digital camera.
...

The Nikon D40 with the 18-55 standard zoom lens is an awesome camera. This is my first DSLR, I have been shooting Canon and Nikon 35mm for several years and was leary of converting over to digital. I love the rich colors that I am able to get. It is a very simple and straightforware camera to use. The Nikon instructional dvd that I purchased with the camera was very helpful in teaching me the controls and settings that the camera offers.

Being a very budget concenious person, the quality of this camera makes it a very affordable camera. I was even able to add a new Tiffen Circular polarizer that further enhanced the bright colors that the Nikon produce.

This is a great camera for beginners and amateurs. It features are all you will probally need. It offers auto and manual focus, all the major preset automatic modes and still gives you the option to use different creative shooting modes.

I just got a Nikon D40 digital camera and I am loving it. It may only be 6 mega pixels but with the lenses it does not matter. The picture quality is great. The only thing that I cant do with it because it is only 6 mega pixels is blow the pictures up to poster size which I really don't need to do anyway. I use to have a point and shoot and comparing the picture quality between the D40 and the point and shoot, lets just say there is no comparison. The Nikon D40 blows the point and shoot away. I enjoy taking photos of birds and wild life and this camera does everything that I need it to do. I am planning on buying some more lenses for it and some lens filters so I can get a little more creative with the pictures. The Nikon D40 offers you so much more than a regular point and shoot. They may be a little more expensive than some point and shoots but they are well worth it.
...
