rhino817 says "this is a great camera for the serious amateur" about Nikon - D200 Digital Camera

My Nikon D200 has opened up a whole new world of advanced Digital SLR photography. I got into digital SLR photography a couple of years ago with an entry level Nikon D50. This introduced me to the concept of images that could then be processed into fine photographs. After just a few months I wanted to step up to a higher level camera. The Nikon D200 has been great. I have traveled around the western US and taken thousands of images. My photography has become better than I ever thought it could using the Nikon D200. There are now more advanced systems from Nikon but I still am getting great results with my Nikon D200. No mechanical or electronic problems even after 22-3 years and 10,000 + images.

This is not a light camera for easy portability on trips or hikes but the weight trade off is worth the high quality that it provides. If you are serious about stepping up to a higher level the Nikon D200 is a great camera and as newer systems become available, it will be a bargain.

Good digital camera for semi-pro. It is a little too heavy though, but with the quality of the pictures it takes, I do not mind it.

KrisDanica says "Awesome pro-level affordable DSLR" about Nikon - D200 Digital Camera

The Nikon D200 is an awesome pro-level camera for a pretty good price. It has a lot of optional accessories, but I have yet to buy any.

The "fuel gauge function" on the rechargeable battery is great. It gives you a detailed view of how much power is remaining. Just watch out if you buy an extra battery or have another Nikon camera without the fuel gage - you can't interchange the two types of batteries.

Many purchase options only come with the camera body, so it is nice to be able to pick exactly which lens(es) you want. I have two of Nikon's vibration reduction lenses and they work great with the D200. Nikon offers a very wide variety (options and price) of lenses.

The automatic settings work great almost all the time. But it does have a full range of manual settings, which are easily changed with easily accessible options - everything is at your fingertips, unlike some brands.

I think the camera (with a lens) is light for what is packed into it.

The controls would only be confusing...
...

The fav D200 from Nikon!!!

I have had this camera for a while and it goes everywhere I go. It has withstood many bumps, drops, humidity, anything you name it. Of course you have to have it serviced once a year at least. But will keep taking awsome shots, still and action. My passion is taking scenery pictures, which means mostly still shots and the quality of Nikon glass is the best for these kinds of pictures. But now I have a child, which means plenty of action shots. And this camera has not failed me on that job.

I only have one real lense (18-200 VR) that I mainly use. It is a heavy lense and a heavy camera. Together they are something to get used to carrying around. I also use a fixed 28mm 1.8 and the images I get with that are out of this world.

You have to remember that this is a camera for someone who knows a little about photograhy, because all the settings are manual. Also with this kind of camera you will need to buy a speedlight. May I suggest an SB-800. Never buy the little...
...

The nikon d200 digital camera has been a nice reliable camera for me, it has an easy enough interface without being too dumbed down. i would recomend this for anyone who wants to take serious photos. It is of course a heavier camera so that it can make keeping it around sometimes difficult, but the picture quality that it provides over those smaller camera's makes up for it's size. It's very adjustable and allows you to really have a hand in the picture taking. you really feel like a photographer because 'news flash' you are. this isn't your grandma's new point and shoot piece of junk. this is for you people who really want to get serious....

I have now owned the D200 for over a year and a half and have shot thousands of pictures with it. It is well built, mine has been lugged to Asia twice and to the western region of the United States about 3 times now.

I have made some great prints from this camera. I have very pleased with it having the black & white mode built into it since I often like creating B/W prints.

The controls on the camera are mush nicer than most other DSLRs. You have direct manual dial control of many key functions, such as, exposure mode and ISO settings. This is such a time saver since it helps a photographer avoid having to dig into the menu screen to change these key functions.

The camera has an exceptional meter, my exposures always seem to be accurate.

I would even suggest this camera over the newer Nikon D300 unless you need some of the new features it has to offer.

You can see samples of my work at:

marksablow.com

(the works in the "recent works" area are done using my D200)

A superb digital camera. Excellent image quality. Super fast continuous frame rate even shooting in RAW. Large LCD display screen. A professional quality camera in every respect.

A huge upgrade over the D100 it replaces. The custom white balance function yields PERFECT color balance underwater at depth of 50 feet even in relatively poor visibility water (which according to most published sources shouldn't be possible due to a lack of red penetrating beyond 15 feet).

Compatible with most Nikon SLR lenses of the past 50 years (albeit sometimes without functions such as auto focus or auto exposure).
...

I have owned the Nikon D200 for almost a year now. It is an excellant camera and I've had much success with it. It is a 10 mega pixel, which helps with quality and file size if you like stock photography. You can start taking quality pictures right off the bat without having to play with adjustments. Once you become more familiar with the camera, then you can fine tune it however you like. There are many setting built in that can be fine tuned but, if you're not sure of what you are doing it can be quite confusing. Only negative thing I thought of the Nikon D200 was when I first purchased it. At that time Adobe Photoshop did not support the Nikon NEF format. (This is a RAW format, just for Nikon). I had to purchase the Nikon software CAPTURE NX in order to work on the raw files. I assume that Adobe and Nikon have taken care of this problem since, but before purchasing, if you have photoshop or are thinking of purchasing photoshop with this camera, be sure to check to make sure it supports...
...

I am a Navy photographer and use the Nikon D200 for my job. It is a very reliable camera and has a lot of options to individualize my photos. Instead of relying on computer programs I can edit and shoot many things within the camera, including RAW. Double exposure is one of my favorite and not found on very many digital cameras. Though there is always a special place in my heart for black and white film photography digital is another option to consider and this camera is very affective.
...

I finally switched to digital and have found this camera to give me the ability to continue to get the photos that I want. I like the fact that the D200 is nearly the same as my F100 so I can switch between film and digital easily.

The only downside to the D200 that I have found is the automatic setting for the white balance does not seem to be accurate. It is fine for natural daylight but for incandescent lighting it did not get the colors correct. The photos still had some yellow to it. When I switched to the incandescent setting the colors were correct.

The biggest problem I have with this camera is remembering to check the settings for the digital part of the photos. I sometimes forget to check the resolution, the white balance, or things of this type. Being used to film, I'm not remembering to add these checks to the f-stop, framing, and other 'traditional film' requirements.

I really enjoy using this camera.
...
