cj3ryti says "Loving Frank is a romance with great depth" about Nancy Horan - Loving Frank

I really enjoyed Loving Frank by Nancy Horan. I have studied architecture and am a fan of Frank Lloyd Wright's work and have read a great deal about him. Initially I started to read it because of Frank Lloyd Wright and found the book gave you glimpse of what his personal side might have been like.

As I continued to read I found the story of feminism and relationships during this time period very interesting. What a complicated relationship they had -- the breaking of the societal norms, balanced with their self-interests....

Nancy Horan's Loving Frank is a historical fictional account of the life and love of Frank Lloyd Wright and Mahmah Borthwick. The book is fascinating, romantic and a page turner. There is the painstaking love...but the book dives deeply into the debate that is still raging today: a woman's place. Mahmeh is a bright and ambitious woman, a deep thinker, driven by devotion to Frank and her desire to do something big with her life. She is not your average women in 1903. As the reader, we are drawn in by her honesty and her smarts yet we may not always be so sure of the choices she makes.

Horan is a gifted and beautiful writer, and she declares it took her seven years to write Loving Frank. The book weaves together fictional accounts, newspaper clippings, diary entries and letters. Loving Frank is set in Oak Park, IL and Spring Green, WI and travels to pre-WWI Berlin, Paris and Florence. Horan provides glorious descriptions of the architecture, art and culture of the...
...

I have to admit that I put off reading Loving Frank by Nancy Horan for a long time. First, I bought and read every other paperback and hardcover sold in Target that caught my eye. Eventually there was nothing else and the back cover blurb convinced me that I might find the story interesting. Then I got a library card and read about 20 books from there before picking up Loving Frank. Once I finally started reading it, I couldn't put it down!

Loving Frank chronicles the love affair between Frank Lloyd Wright and a client's wife, Mamah Borthwick Cheney, over the course of 11 years. The story begins with Mamah and Edwin Cheney hiring Wright to design a "good times" version of his Prairie House and follows the lovers as they try to hide their affair, they leave their spouses and run off to Europe, and eventually live together at Taliesin, a house Wright designed for Mamah in Wisconsin. The story is told as a combination of diary entries, letters, and traditional third-person perspective. ...
...

allysue says "This former Chicagoan loved Loving Frank!" about Nancy Horan - Loving Frank

Growing up in Chicago, the homes of Frank Lloyd Wright were familiar to me, as were his homes in Wisconsin (we took field trips to visit them!). HOWEVER, I knew little to nothing about his personal life. This engrossing novel creates a very complex, multi-faceted love story between two kindred souls who were willing to sacrifice everything in order to be together. Difficult to read at times, it is well worth getting through--a love like Frank and Mamah's deserved to be recorded for the ages....
