There is more to Hawaii that the said white sand beaches. Which in my experince aren't so white. I was very turned off by the Waikiki beaches, which were milky white water with residues of sunscreen instead of clear blue water. I found three beaches that are worth a day of your time, and figures they are no where close to each other. Lani Kai beach park, on the southeast end of the island, Waimea bay on the north shore, and Ko'Olina lagoons on the west side of O'ahu. I found my time was better spent on hikes. On O'ahu there are hikes for beginners to the experienced. For a short family fun hike there is Mauna Willi falls, near Kaneohe, O'ahu. These falls you can jump off off and into a deep pool. A longer hike that would definitly require a good pair of shoes is the crouching lion hike, behind Crouching Lion Inn, on Kamehameha Hwy. This hike is in the shape of a horseshoe and has portions that are on the tops of the Ko'olau mountain range. This gives a great un-obscurred view of...
...

My husband and I went to Hawaii in August 2007 for our 1 year anniversary and it was the best $ we have ever spent. Exspensive? Yes. Worth it? Definitely. We stayed 5 days in Waikiki right across from the beach and spent 4 days in Maui on Ka'anapali Beach. If you're going to Waikiki, here are some of the things we suggest you do!

1. Go shopping on the "strip", enjoy the busy-ness of it all!
2. Snorkeling! - This was our favorite activity
3. Pearl Harbor - such a huge part of our history!
4. Tour of Honolulu - we had an amazing bus driver that was candid and informative!
5. Luau! - can't express this enough, we went to Germaine's Luau, pretty popular

In Maui (Oahu) we spent a full day driving the Road to Hana which was beautiful and fun and tiring all at once! Worth it though if you've got a rental car. Bring along a lunch and some cash to buy from the stands selling homemade banana bread along the way! We also went to a Luau in Maui. Mainly we spent time on the beach because......

Tourism is travel for predominantly recreational or leisure purposes or the provision of services to support this leisure travel. The World Tourism Organization defines tourists as people who "travel to and stay in places outside their usual environment for not more than one consecutive year for leisure, business and other purposes not related to the exercise of an activity remunerated from within the place visited". Tourism has become a popular global leisure activity. In 2006, there were over 842 million international tourist arrivals.

Tourism is vital for many countries, due to the large intake of money for businesses with their goods and services and the opportunity for employment in the service industries associated with tourism. These service industries include transportation services such as cruise ships and taxis, accommodation such as hotels and entertainment venues, and other hospitality industry services such as resorts.
...

Jo says "The islands of Hawaii offer a lot: These are my top choices." about My Top Picks for Your Trip to Hawaii

We spent three weeks on the islands of Hawaii. There wasn't anything we did that sticks out in my mind as something to avoid so I had to really think about my top picks. These are in random order:
1. Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park is located on the southeastern part of the the Big Island. It was about a 100-mile drive from where we were staying - Kailua-Kona. It took us over 2 hours. It is about 30 miles from Hilo and my recommendation is to stay in Hilo the night you go to the Park and then go back to the Park the next day. There is so much to do here, we only hit the tip of the iceberg and we spent well over 12 hours here! The lava started flowing right before we got to this amazing place but it isn't Disney World so the lava is unpredictable. There is a lot more to do here though than see the lava but it is a major event.

The Kilauea Visitor Center, just off Highway 11 is open daily from 7:45am - 5:00pm year round but we could have stayed in the park all night at the end of Crater...
...
