My Sister's Keeper was the first of many Jodi Picoult books that I've read over the years. Reading it blew my mind and cemented the book up in my Top 10 Books Ever. I had heard that the movie adaptaion of the book was simply awful, but I must say that I was very pleasantly surprised by it.

Of course, the movie follows the main plot of the book. A daughter had leukemia and couldn't find a bone marrow match, so her parents went to a fertility clinic to create a "perfect match" child that would be able to give blood cells, bone marrow, etc. as the older daughter needed it. By the time she is 11 years old, her older sister is in kidney failure and her parents are trying to force her to donate one of her kidneys to her sister. Anna has decided that she is DONE donating body parts to save her sister's life, and both hires a lawyer and files a suit for medical emancipation from her parents to ensure that she won't have to unwillingly donate a vital organ. As the case winds through the...
...

lado925 says "Extremly disappointing!" about My Sister's Keeper (2009)

I have read the book and absolutly loved it. I tell everyone they should read it. I was very excited to hear they were going to make a film out of it. I waited patiently for it to be made. I was unable to go to the movies to watch it and very glad I did not pay the money. I just rented it and was very disappointed. It had a lot of big name people in it, but that still didn't keep my attention. If they are going to make a movie from such a great and well known book they should stay with the story line. The book was great and the movie just stunk. Read the book instead. It is worth the money you spend on the book rather than the movie.
...

steinva19 says "Satisfying yet disappointing" about My Sister's Keeper (2009)

I just saw My sister's keeper after reading the book. While I thought the movie was good, I think it sucks that the ending was changed.

I went into the movie expecting to use an entire box of kleenex when in reality, I barely cried a bit. Does this make me cold? Maybe it does but there was so much going on in the movie that it was kind of hard to follow or show much emotion. The book did a much better job!

I thought the ending of the book made the story. I was shocked when the movie ended the way it did and that it was so different. If I would've just seen the movie and not known about the book, I think it would've been okay. However, that was not the case.

I feel that the movie should've followed the book more closely. For those people who only see the movie, I feel it would be very predictable. Final opinion: Decent movie, if you have not read the book I think you'll love the movie. If you have read the book, I think you'll be disappointed.

GigiandAdonai says "Do you sacrifice the life of one child to save another?" about My Sister's Keeper (2009)

I read the book My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult almost two years ago and I emailed Picoult and told her I would love to see the book made into a movie. I was pleasantly surprised when a few months later she emailed me back and said my wish was coming true, My Sister's Keeper was coming to the big screen! By then my sister had already read the book as well as a good friend of mine and we were all waiting for the movie to premiere.

My younger sister's birthday is July 1st so I planned a day with the girls to get her to the movie. One of my nephews asked if he could tag along because he didn't want to be home alone while his siblings were with other family and his dad was at work so we took Marcus with us.

Don't get this movie confused with the movie of the same title that is playing on Lifetime with Elizabeth Perkins. That one is based on a true story about a lady that takes care of her special needs sister. The 2009 version reaches out to a younger generation, has a lot of medical...
...

As a feeling person, it was difficult. As a sister, it was excruciating. And as a mom, it was unbearable. Watching the previews for My Sister's Keeper, you know it's going to be difficult and emotional, just because it's about a child who is very sick with cancer and whose family is at odds over it. The impact, however, hits you possibly harder than you might expect. When the tears came almost from the beginning of the movie, I knew it would be hard.

Cameron Diaz and Jason Patric play parents Sara and Brian with a brood of three kids. They're different, though, than most families. When their son and daughter, Kate and Jesse (Sofia Vassilieva and Evan Ellingson) were very young, Kate was diagnosed with leukemia. None of the immediate family was a good match to donate, and rather than go with an untested anonymous donor, the parents take the doctor up on his suggestion to create a test tube baby that's a perfect match to donte umbilical fluids. When the leukemia returns, the parents...
...

auroradei says "Predictable but Heartwarming" about My Sister's Keeper (2009)

Just saw My Sister's Keeper starring Cameron Diaz, Jason Patric, Abigail Breslin, Alec Baldwin and Joan Cuzak. What a fantastic little film, it was not my first choice, but as Transformers was sold out and we were escaping the heat we opter for this film.

The film is about a family's struggle with caring for a sick child who has cancer. Something I can personally relate to as the mother of a two medically needy children and a cancer survivor. The emotions are real and nothing in the story is over the top. The story gives the perspective of all of the family members involved, how they were before the diagnosis and how they have lived with the disease. Cameron Diaz and Jason Patric are realistic as parents struggling to keep their family afloat and positive. In my opinion the only thing missing from this family's struggle was a money/insurance battle.

Abigail Breslin serves as the child who was engineered to save her older sister. Alec Baldwin is the quirky lawyer whom she hires to...
...

GreatMartin says "A weep fest--bring the tissues" about My Sister's Keeper (2009)

I knew going into "My Sister's Keeper" that it would be a weep fest. Considering it is about a 14 year old who has leukemia and needs a kidney which will be donated by her 11 year old sister who was conceived to supply 'body parts' for the older sibling how could it not be a weeper?!

Aside from the interaction of the family, which also includes an older male sibling, the parents and the mother's sister the major plot line is that of the 11 year old suing her parents to stop using her body without asking her.

While every other line can cause crying, and many do, there are also laughs along the way to relieve the tension. There is bleeding, vomiting, many hospital scenes but there are also warm family moments, a prom scene and a young couple, both dealing with cancer, and possible death, finding love though that, too, ends up in a sad way.

There is an unexpected twist near the end--at least unexpected to me--that brings about some satisfaction as to what finally happens....
...
