jasyjen says "For anyone that's ever been picked on as a child. " about Mr. Woodcock

Seann William Scott is hilarous as John Farley, writer of a self help book titled "Letting Go". As a child, Farley is traumatized by his gym teacher, Mr. Woodcock (played by Billy Bob Thornton). Mr. Woodcock is one of those gym teachers that we all hated. He expects too much, gives the kids a real hard time, is verbally abusive and basically puts the fear of God into them.

John Farley (Seann William Scott) thinks he's "let go" of the trauma put on him by Mr. Woodcock. But when Farley returns home to receive an award offered by his hometown, he finds that his mother (Susan Sarandon) has begun dating Mr. Woodcock. Not only dating, but they are in love.

The remainder of the movie is absolutely HILARIOUS! Watching Farley have "flashbacks" of his gym classes had me rolling on the floor. Billy Bob Thornton is at his best as Mr. Woodcock; he delivers his lines without any emotion whatsoever, and it is still funny.

Throughout the movie, Farley & Woodcock are very competetive for...
...

WDarling says "failed to give any acceptable performance" about Mr. Woodcock

Dumb, stupic and unfulfilling. I was invited to see a movie and this was the only reasonable choice, but it failed to meet any expectations. The only redeeming character was the young man who could not conceal his utter disgust for a former gym teacher that never rose to any acceptable standard of behavior, neither before nor after. Don't waste time on senseless drivel....

acaste119 says "Thought it would be funnier." about Mr. Woodcock

I found this movie to be less enjoyable than I had hoped. It wasn't a completely horrible movie to say the least. I just found the actual funny parts of the movie to be too few and far between. More of the physical comedy probably would have done it some good...for me anyway. Mr. Woodcock was a little too harsh also...not a fan....

gamera23 says "generates comedy and a bit of pathos with its characters" about Mr. Woodcock

Taking his duties more seriously than he has in other recent comedies (such as Bad News Bears and School for Scoundrels), Billy Bob Thornton essays the title role in Mr. Woodcock with the intention of creating an icon. We meet him in the cold opening flashback scene as he runs through his paces, teaching gym class to a collection of high school non-athletes like a stoic, sadistic robot drill sergeant. Offhandedly delivering pain and humiliation to his hapless victims, he focuses in on chubby young John Farley (Kyley Baldridge) for some special attention.

Years later, Farley has somehow grown up to be handsome, athletic Seann William Scott (Bulletproof Monk), the world famous author of a best-selling self-help book. In the midst of a promotional tour, John receives an invitation to return to his home town of Forest Meadows, Nebraska, to receive the locally prestigious Corn Cob Key. To the annoyance of his tour manager (Amy Poehler), he can't resist accepting, anticipating a chance to show...
...

I went and saw this movie and thought it was very funny! I love Bill Bob Thornton, he is a very funny guy. He plays his Bad Santa attitude, which I find funny. The entire movie was enjoyable and I would recommend it to anyone. I would even go see it again..perhaps I'll rent it....

Jo says "Mr. Woodcock made my mom laugh and that's enough for me." about Mr. Woodcock

To the Point
When I come to Florida I like to take my mom to a light movie. Serious movies with tangled plots are difficult for her to understand. The fact the reviews weren't great for Mr. Woodcock didn't stop us. She loves Susan Sarandon and that was good enough for me. As it turned out we thoroughly enjoyed the movie.

A Closer View

The movie starts out by showing what for me was actually painful to watch - Billy Bob Thornton, Mr. Woodcock, as an abusive gym coach. Fast forward many years and one of the kids who got the brunt of the coach's wrath the most is a famous writer. John Farley played by Seann William Scott wrote Letting Go. This book seems to fit his life until he encounters a challenge that shows him how difficult that task can be.

When visiting his mom, Beverly Farley played by Susan Sarandon, and getting an award from his hometown she introduces him to her boyfriend, Mr. Woodcock. John then goes on a mission to break them up. I won't tell you the rest!

The movie is 87 minutes....
...
