LisaCarey says "Social/Professional Networking Site that Takes it to Real Life " about Meetup.com

I use several methods of social networking such as Yahoo Groups, Facebook and even starting tweet tweeting at Twitter but Meetup.com is the first site I have seen that successfully takes social or professional networking away from the Internet and back to the real world.

Meetup.com is a social and professional networking online service that does charge a fee for groups. On the site you create a profile, and then you are notified of groups in your area with the same interests - whether social or professional. For example I use Meetup.com for one of my mother's groups but also for meeting other freelance writers in my area and comparing "notes." I also have been involved in a "green parents" group from meet up where parents can compare notes and schedule family friendly activities for meeting.

You can create your profile for free, however to join a group you may be asked to pay a fee to off set the charges the organizer of your particular group will have already spent to form...
...

mom2five2008 says "Where all the good mommies go in search of playgroups" about Meetup.com

By the time my 3rd kid rolled around, I was getting bored hanging out at home all the time with no friends (all my friends had careers instead of families!), so I decided to do an internet search for playgroups. That search led me to meetup.com and it's been the best 3 years of my mommyhood. We go to playdates atleast 2 times a week and my kids have a blast playing with other kids. I enjoy the MNO (moms night out) and it's great knowing there's other moms out there dealing with the same issues raising their kids.
...

lavelda1957 says "Meetup a great Concept" about Meetup.com

Meetup is a great concept. People worldwide have joined meetup and able to share ideas and thoughts. It doesn't matter what you are looking for you can find it on meetup and if its not there you can post it so others looking for it can join your group. My first group I joined was for people who had the same health condition as I. It was back in 2003 and it was a great support for myself and them for us to be able to meet and not only talk about our problems and what worked for each one of us or didn't. But we were able to put a face to the names and that was very helpful. I recently joined for a walk group and plan to go for the next meeting Monday. For those who don't have anyone to excercise with what better than join a group for motivation.

They do charge and its a rather fair price and a money back gurantee. The group needs a organizer who pays up front. It's $19 for one month, $45 for 3 months and $72 for 6 months. So the more months you pay for the cheaper it is. The leader can...
...

usar1984 says "new to the area or looking for new things to do...?" about Meetup.com

Meetup.com has something for everyone. If you don't see a group for you, you can start one. Groups are designated by area and interest. You can meet different people, learn a new hobby, go places you wouldn't have otherwise gone, etc. I initially learned about these groups through another single person. I joined a hiking group, a singles group, and a dining out group. There are so many activities I know about that I wouldn't have known about before even though I have lived in this area for 13 years. I have met people I wouldn't have otherwise met despite the variety of things with which I have been involved. I live on the East Coast & told a friend on the West Coast about meetup. She joined a photography club and is loving it. You have nothing to lose by checking this site out....

Valaxo says "Great way to meet people with similar interests" about Meetup.com

I've attended meet-ups focusing on Small Business/Entrepreneurship. One has been great - it's a group of people meeting up informally for dinner once a month with no fee to attend. There are always new people joining and no set topic. The other meet-up I attended was just a lecture series in disguise and a "Small Business Guru" trying to get his name out there, sign people up for his lectures, and sell his books and other merchandise. I think the concept is a great idea, especially if you're new to an area or have an interest that none of your friends are into....

Bryan-Carey says "Meet New Friends With Similar Interests at Meetup.com" about Meetup.com

I'm one of those people that like to join official organizations and keep myself involved in local activities, even if it means getting labeled in a stereotypical way for associating with a specific club or group. Now that I have moved to a new part of the country, I find myself once again looking around for different activist groups, social gatherings, and other ways to fill my time. One web site that has helped me get connected is Meetup.com, a web service for keeping notified.

Web Site Commentary:

Meetup.com is designed to help people find other people with a common interest. It sorts is different meeting groups by topic and by city. Using the Meetups by Topic function, members can lookup subjects and then find out if any organized gatherings are scheduled for their area. Meetups by City allows members a way to lookup different meetups arranged by geographic location. If you cannot find what you want, Meetup.com also offers the ability to create/define your own group or club and schedule...
...
