SMCrosse says "An amusing storyline, with great music and acting." about Mamma Mia! (2008 movie)

The storyline for Mama Mia intrigued me the first moment I sat down to watch it. The opening scene was sweeping and the music just dragged me in. The rest of the movie was also just as engaging. Pierce Brosnan and the other male leads were not really the greatest of singers, but since I doubt they were ever classically trained, I did not mind as much as I might have. The choreography was fun, whimisical and showed a new side to Meryl Streep that I had never seen before. This movie made me like Meryl Streep more than I ever had before.

The music was fantastic, use of Abba's hits and how they incorporated them into the story fit really well, and made the movie flow. Usually if a musical's songs don't fit with how the movie plot is moving along, it is harder to stay involved with it nad the characters. But, there wasn't a problem with this.

I think my favorite scene in that movie is the scene set to Slipping Through My Fingers. A touching song that made me want to cry.

All in all, a good movie....
...

I went into Mama Mia having no idea what to expect and found myself really enjoying myself, as I tried to figure out what was going on! Since I did not know what the plot was, I at first just enjoyed the music of Abba, which is grew up with. I just never realized that their songs had been put into a movie. In some cases, I felt that the songs were forced into that particular plot, however, for the most part, I really did enjoy it and did not take it seriously for one minute. I thought the scenery was breathtaking; and since I have seen the movie I have had the great pleasure of going to Greece, and visiting some of the islands I can truly appreciate the beauty of the movie even more. However, as much as I love Meryl Streep, and she is one of my favorite actresses, I cannot understand her being cast in that role. I feel that she was just too old. Also, sorry Pierce Brosnan, you are a joy to look at, but your singing!!
...

What can I say about this movie.....only that I am sad that I didn't get to see it on stage. The movie was fantastic. First of all, I love the musical group ABBA, so seeing the music put to a movie was just an extra treat. Meryl Streep was just absolutely wonderful. Pierce Brosnan and Colin Firth was bonuses! The acting was great as well as many of the actors doing their own singing. I must say I was surprised by some who did sing. They did a wonderful job. The comedic flair was outstanding as well as the romantic tones. The music fit into each scene very well. I watched it three times in the theater/drive-in and found myself singing along each and every time. I laughed out loud so many times and seemed to find new things to enjoy with each viewing. You really need to watch at the end of the credits. Loved those outfits! I finally bought the movie on DVD as well as the soundtrack! A definite must see by my standards!!
...

adanowski says "Mamma Mia is the worst movie ever!" about Mamma Mia! (2008 movie)

Mamma Mia! is the worst movie ever. It has horrible acting and a horrible plot line. I think that says enough. The movie mamma mia! was supposed to be some sort of musical. The singing was definitely not even close to being up to par and the dancing was off beat. I hated having to watch this piece of shit movie for film class and am ashamed to have ever set my eyes on the cover. The acting really sucked and was definitely not even close to the standards that this horrid movie should have reached. If I have to watch this one more time I will slit my wrists with a pair of ice skates then poke my eye balls out with a pen and take a chainsaw to my nuts. And for my grand finale I would replace my eye balls with my nuts so I never have to see another fucking stupid movie such as this one. The actors in this movie should honestly go fuck them selves sideways for putting me through this disaster. Thank for your time :)
...

Mamma Mia is not a classic musical in the traditional sense. It isn't Chicago or Moulin Rouge, Sweeney Todd or Dreamgirls; it's not even Hairspray. What it is is a lighthearted and fun (but silly) film based on a lighthearted and fun (but silly) Broadway musical designed for no other reason than to celebrate the classically fluffy Abba catalog... and what a celebration it is! The relatively unimportant storyline of a girl who just wants to know which of three men is her daddy (Meryl was a bad girl 20 yrs ago) is lifted straight out of the camp/trash 80's TV mini-series Lace, but it's still a heartwarming tale of a girl who just wants the right man to walk her down the aisle. Streep is typically Streep: pitch perfect even when the film is weak. As her daughter, Amanda Seyfried is lovely and ethereal and is so good that she's probably inking future film roles as we speak. Brosnan is getting a lot of flack, but I found his performance charming and his voice was better than the reviews imply....
...

The very first time I saw an advertisement for Mamma Mia!, I just knew I had to have it. Meryl Streep is absolutely outstanding along with the girl that plays her daughter, Pierce Brosnan, well, there's nothing at all negative to say about him, always been a fan. The entire cast was fabulous. I was/am a single mother and the relationship between these two in the movie reminded me of such wonderful times and moments in her youth. She's 28 now, but we are still making those special memories and moments. AND, of course, ABBA, I had not listened to this music in years and had forgotten how much I loved it. The 70's costumes they wear when performing during the movie are so remarkable, brings back good memories, the good old days. My daughter watched this with me one time and thought it was good, but being so young, did not relate with me about how sentimental this movie is to me. I bought the CD and DVD and listen to the music often when I am on the computer and watch the DVD...
...

I love movies and I love musicals. There are a few muscials that I have seen adapted into movies that really didn't work, but this one did. The same energy, fun and excitment that is in the stage production is transferred to the screen. The only thing that at times gets hard for all musicals is the use of the chorus, which even here it's kind of awkward. Also Brosnan singing, man I wish they had chosen someone that could sing...but all the other actors/actesses are amazing!
...

Mama Mia is an interesting musical. My kiddos love musical because they can sing and dance throughout the movie. I'm not sure if this moie is completely appropriate in topic all of the time, but the music is great. However, if you are not an ABBA fan, this is not the musical for you.

I love the music and the storyline is interesting. I had always heard about this musical, but it wa f no interest to me until the DVD came out. Honestly, at first I was not wanting to see th musical, but my teenage daughter borrowed the movie from a friend. Now, I often find mysef with the music running through my head. Now, I don't consider that a bad thing. While I do not want to watch this movie every week, it is a movie that stands to be repeatedly watched, much like a good CD is listened to repeatedly.

Concerning the music, even my 3 year old daughter loves the music. However, as she gets older some of the songs will be skipped over, lest there are too many ideas that need to be explained....
...

I grew up listening to Abba from my parents. So when I found out the movie Mamma Mia was coming out with the songs from Abba I was excited. But I am not that into musical movies and my husband isn't either. Well when it came out I took a chance and rented it. My husband found out that it was a musical and wasn't very happy. Well we watched it anyways just cause I didn't want to waist the money. So I stuck it in the dvd player and we all sat down to watch it.

Just to give you an idea of how hard it is to rent a movie or even find a movie that everyone in my family likes let me tell you. I have three kids and two step kids plus me and my husband. We rent alot of movies a month and I usually find maybe three movies out of fifty that we all like. My two step kids are teens and they like what my husband likes but my three kids are younger and they like the cartoons or animated movies which my husband don't. I like the horror movies but my younger three don't. My husband likes fighting movies...
...

We got free HBO for a year so I decided to catch all the movies I've wanted to see but haven't wanted to rent. Mamma Mia was one of those because I knew my husband wouldn't watch it. I love musicals and I was really in the mood to check this out tonight. I go to a lot of broadway shows with my mom and sister but we had never made it to this one. With Meryl Streep, Colin Firth and Pierce Brosnan starring, I just knew I'd like it.

When they make a broadway musical into a movie, there are two ways they can go with it. One way is to make it exactly like the live broadway show (i.e. The Producers) and another way is to movie-ise it so it appeals to a wider audience. While the first method may please real broadway fans, the second method pleases a lot more people and still gives that over-the-top broadway feel. Mamma Mia went the second way, and I think it worked out pretty good! When they went into the songs, they didn't just sing, they had action going on throughout and...
...
